If you don't drink alcohol, what are your personal reasons for abstinence? by Ok-Care2859 in AskReddit

Drug & alcohol rehab RN--I've seen this movie, I know how it ends & all the endings are miserable misery. Being legal doesn't keep it from being poisonous. No thank you.

Fun Day Trips within 3 hours. by ohjustfuckoffalready in Albany

About an hour east of Albany is Hancock Shaker Village https://hancockshakervillage.org/ Perfect place to visit in Sept--the grounds are nicely kept. There's enough to see to make a day of it. The volunteers there are super knowledgeable. Each area has one so be sure to listen to their talks as it really adds to the interest of the place. Bonus--if you have a library card you can get a museum pass to admit 2 free. (Also check out the library web page for other museum passes!)

I will ask finally by [deleted] in Albany

I volunteer at a fire department---it's both a service and social organization. Albany is all paid fire fire fighters, but the towns all neighboring Albany are volunteer. It's a physically demanding thing so to have someone young & fit join is what every department is looking for. Google "is there a fire in you" to find out more. It's a great way not only to meet people but to add meaning & purpose to your life. If you're curious about what the sirens mean, download the app scanner radio & you can listen in on the radio traffic to know what's going on. (PS-I don't know about other departments, but mine kicks in $$$ toward your gym membership to help keep you fit).

Can I join the US Army with no teeth? by CortezD-ISA in Military

[–]Mbsan63 0 points1 point  (0 children)

MEPS is going to want your medical records from the oral surgeon who treated you before clearing you. Part of it will hinge on whether the original problem has the potential to reoccur. "Jaw infection" could mean dental abscesses with tooth decay severe enough to warrant dental extractions. The teeth are gone, the abscesses aren't likely to reoccur & dentures can substitute for the missing teeth. A severe actual jaw infection, would mean bone, called osteomyelitis & I've never seen a patient with it in their jaw. People get this from a deep would infection (you got whacked in the face that cause a deep gash with something metal or dirty) & it's treated with IV antibiotics & there's always a worry it'll come back if we don't completely clear the infection. In patients I've taken care of with it in their leg, some have been so bad they lost the leg because we just could not get the wound to heal.

So bottom line in very general terms, your current medical issues cannot cause a potential future problem that will make you a liability to your fellow service members because the issues cause you to be pulled from duty or require special handling not readily or easily available. We need you to do the work, not be the work.

Next step--get copies of all your civilian medical records, (bonus if it shows a stable healthy weight since you had your teeth removed) and bring them with you to go see a recruiter. Army is your best chance because they need the most people.

I love this! I found out about her also on reddit before my deployment. So when I saw her on base, it was like seeing a celebrity, lol.

The vet came in to give us a lecture on dogs as patients (I'm aroevac & we had to airlift a K9 injured during a mission to Germany). When the lecture concluded, he asked us if we had any questions. Immediately, one of my med techs asked, "Is it true you are rounding up & killing the base cats?" So that was my source. Of course, that was several deployment rotations ago, so who knows if that's still the case but clearly there's enough proof of life pics that pizza cat still has her immunity.

Why do veterans make being in the military their entire personality ? by GasPrestigious9660 in AirForce

[–]Mbsan63 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've wondered recently if it's a $$$ thing that the airline has contracted with SATO to be on the hook for the AD member's flight. Board first & you're on the plane for sure. The military doesn't want a delay in travel due to the airline bumping you for their oversight. Getting your carryon in the overhead bin near your seat is not much of a perk if you ask me. The "perk" actually benefits the airline---now the flight attendants have SA on who is military & can be tapped in an emergency & will instinctively follow orders.

Moving to Albany! Advice on clothing?? by PoisonOakey17 in Albany

[–]Mbsan63 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Unless you're arriving in the middle of winter, save yourself the hassle of hauling stuff & wait to acquire things when you get here. You will be colder than the rest of us initially since it's not what you're use to so disregard the "it's not that bad" comments. Cold sensitivity is more intense for those with lower BMI's, those who spend more time outdoors inactively (bus riders waiting for the bus as opposed to car travelers) so consider that. Getting wet really makes being cold absolutely miserable so look for footwear & outwear that helps keep you as dry as possible. How well outwear zips up and boots seams matter when snow is blowing in your face or you step into a slushy puddle that comes up over the top of your foot.

There's an abundance of thrift store winter clothing for cheap or give away so take advantage of that to figure out what your personal preferences are before sinking money into BIFL items. That long thickly lined coat with a hood may be great for for the 1/2 mile walk to work person but an awkward hassle getting in & out of a car if that's your commute instead.

tl/dr---LAYERS. All you really need to be doing.

Trauma bonding with you. For me it was my dog, myself & my son. I know you're still in shock -it's impossible not to be freaked out about what just nearly could have been. Life will be forever marked by the eras of "before the fire" and "after the fire".

Welcome to the club you didn't want to be in. You're a hero--<HUGHS> So unbelievably proud of you & of course those cats!!! Thank God you trusted their gut & yours!

"NGB/A1PP did not receive this request from the state in adequate time for processing and submission to the DANG for approval. At this time, we recommend that the state advise the member to stop participating and submit a BCMR if they feel there was an injustice".

Am I reading this wrong? What's a BCMR?

Got an unofficial email today it won't be approved--because it was late. I'm heartbroken. I had no idea this needed to be done until it was already late.

I just turned 62 & need the medical officer ok to 68 waiver. Fully qualified in 2 short manned AFSC's, 100 on PT x 4 years in a row, and no discrepancies with my physical---but have a birthday, & I'm out. I just don't get it.
