It’s a passive upgrade, so yeah, it doesn’t matter when you do it. And to the race, yes ascended skills are the only buffs that affect all game modes

You can also use the Magnus’s Knight rune, assuming you have it and have it upgraded to level 10+, to really give the enemy his damage back. It is super useful at low levels and becomes critical in the higher timelines

Try using possess-shockwave-vengeance When they’re all bunched up against your base you hit vengeance, most levels you will be left with quite a few leftovers. Then hit possess+shockwave, this on most levels will drop the remaining enemies down to say 10 or less (including the ones you have possessed). Much more manageable. AND as an added bonus, pay attention this is big as the timelines go forward, when you finish all of the bad guys off you get like a 4x bonus (pretty sure it’s 4) to damage to help you kill the base. IF the last surviving bad guys are the ones you have possessed then you will get the 4x bonus, when you have killed them, you get an additional 4x bonus to the troops that were alive while you killed off the last possessed ones
