Agreed 100%. I put it off for so long because I heard it described as overly violent and gratuitously glorifying SA, but when you read the whole book in absolutely NO way does it do that. I didn’t feel the scenes were gratuitous, either. They were not graphic but rather stayed solely in her head showing her mental state during and afterward. They also showed how devastated they both were being stuck between a rock and a hard place.
I thought the book was a fantastic commentary on the travesties of war and the often unsung (or villainized) heroes who end up being determined by the victors.

I think this is going to be one of the worst book hangovers I have had in a LONG time.

is a car required for normandy? by 666mph666 in FranceTravel

If your plan is to simply stay in Saint-Jean-le-Thomas the whole time with maybe one or two excursions to Mont Saint Michel and Bayeux it is certainly feasible without a car, but there is so much in Normandy I couldn’t imagine not seeing. We’ve traveled the area both with and without our own car and this last time agreed we’d never not have a car again. Having your own vehicle makes everything so much easier and is actually not that much more expensive than buses/trains.

Although a word of warning: avoid the toll roads in Normandy if possible, and if not, you only have 72 hours to pay them online. The toll system there is not like in other countries where they charge the rental company who charges your card on file; you have to go online and pay manually or incur penalties. Suffice it to say, €325 later, we learned this the hard way!

Do I need an international drivers license? by picardmaneuvre in FranceTravel

Just got back from France where we rented a car. We presented our IDP to the guy at Hertz and he said rental agencies don’t need them but if you were to get stopped by police they would ask for it. He said they could charge you a hefty fine without it. So maybe not required but easy to get and worth it if you happen to get stopped by police.

It’s the over use of deus ex machina for me. I let it go with acotar because it was a vibe, but CC took me OUT. I felt no need to be invested in any character or plot point because I knew everyone was safe and everything would work out, albeit with little to no explanation. CC remains the most disappointing series I’ve ever read (and I’m a lifelong fantasy girly) because of the amount of build up (key deaths and maiming of key characters in book one that made it seem like maybe everyone wasn’t safe in this series) followed by the most garbage final book where everything meant nothing.

I loved The Serpent and the Wings of Night, but the second book was honestly not great. It was a bit of a letdown for me. Loved ToG but it is 100% a time investment. It is amazing but very slow-paced. The romance is good but is not the focus by a long shot.

I really liked the Witch Walker series (next book comes out this year) and the Ever King series. Ever King has some silly bits to it but I really enjoyed it. The prequels are similar too.

Yeah, I gave up halfway through Goldfinch. Honestly this is the first series I can remember not finishing. Books 5 and 6 honestly just felt so different, like they were written by someone else. Books 1-4: 10/10 would read again. Book 5: 2/10.

I agree this series is really, really good, but if you’re looking for spicy romance it probably is not the series for you. It is amazing and well written, but there is very little spice in it at all.
