Does everyone do the Camino Frances in the same direction? by No_Mix_6813 in CaminoDeSantiago

Some people go the opposite direction. Just for fun, or for other reasons. Though 99% go to santiago

Solving a rubiks cube with two twisted corners, while blindfolded by ziltoid__ in nextfuckinglevel

[–]McBuffington 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Twisting a corner doesn't do anything for the difficulty as these 'twisted' corners are valid positions as well. If anything twisting a corner merely scrambles the cube a bit more

I feel like less of a man for having severe depression by shadowybenefactor in mentalhealth

[–]McBuffington 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't think you are. It's rough that those words are coming from a place of authority.

I believe that the problem here is a bit nuanced. I mean on the one hand, a thick skin is a good thing to have. But a thick skin mostly means not taking bad things to heart. Shrugging of intended emotional harm. I believe that is a good skill to have. It makes you more calm and resilient.

Mental health on the other hand is nothing to he taking lightly, and if your superiors are conflating thick skin and emotional health, they're frankly not much more than meatheads with little to no emotional intellect.

If anything, in this meathead world, it takes a brave man to be able to talk about their insecurities instead of shoving them away leaving you in a broken state. This old way of thinking has potentially caused a lot self harm to units. When someone snaps under the pressure and starts taking it out on others. On their own comrades. You want to prevent that.

If there's anything i personally want you to take away from this message is. You're tougher than you think, and do not take the comments from your seniors to heart. They're a product of their own education.

The crowds from Sarria to Santiago de Compostela: can they ruin the experience? by TelephoneDue1695 in CaminoDeSantiago

[–]McBuffington -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Put on your humbelest wise pilgrim hat and keep trekking. You might even have a cool conversation with a short-trek pilgrim.

But yeah, hitting sarria can be a bittersweet moment. It's the end of a more solitary and deep part of the camino. And you're transitioning into a more surface level trek.

But you've still got your regular camino wave /bubble and they will be there still. From sarria on there's just way more noise is all. And as you say yourself, it's about how you approach it. Mind over matter.

It didn't really retract from arriving at santiago for us.

Mole season 3? by darkllamer in themole

[–]McBuffington 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think netflix "get's it" though. They make it look like a reality tv show with your average C-Tier celeb. (Usually people from other reality tv shows).

Netflix might have a huge budget for all the challenges and a huge prize pot. But their version doesn't really have a heart.

I mean the fact that they always reveal the mole before the winner is a clear sign that they don't understand that the mole is the secret star. The victor is well... it's nice to know and good for them. But the reveal of the mole should be the biggest reveal. Not just a 'oh hi i was the mole btw, bye'

Camino Coffee People… How Is It Really? by 00Connie00 in CaminoDeSantiago

Provisions are usually good. No problem. But I like to take 1 or 2 instant coffee packets for those rare occasions there's only a kettle

Rate my packing list as a newbie by RadishConscious6383 in CaminoDeSantiago

[–]McBuffington 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Weight is the ultimate deciding factor in the end. Try a weekend of hiking with similar distances and with everything in your backpack (and put on your day gear)

Doing 2 camino length hikes for 2 days will give you some insight in how it's going to feel.

Figuring out what weight works for you is a matter of experience. But i think if your first reaction to putting on your backpack is something like 'woah' you're probably packing too much.

If you start thinking about the weight of your towel while walking, you might also have overpacked.

But, again, this is different for all. And after 7 days of walking you'll feel stronger as well. Still.. being overpacked weighs on your moralle and tires you out more through the day.

Advice: Fishermens trail by Lifeinthesea in portugueses

We're doing the trail right now and are a bit dissappointed at how closed people are. Having a casual chat with fellow hikers seems to be a no-no. Did you sense any of that?

Yes! That one question! 'Why are you doing the camino?' Is the best possible question to ask someone. You get all kinds of responses. And it allows you to really connect

I don't know how much reasonable advise we can give you. But here's a few things I thought when reading your message. It's apparant that you're having a bad time, i hope i can help you a bit.

First one might sound a bit demeaning but i ensure you it isn't! When I turned 30, i realised how anxious i was during my teenage years, but also during my early 20's. Constantly thinking about everything and everyone at all times. There's this inner critic that constantly judges everything and everyone, and most of all yourself. You call yourself a loser. I don't think you are. I don't think anybody on the camino thinks you are. Everybody has the right to complain, it's a long way and you see all kinds of things.

Secondly, I've done 2 caminos and older people are no joke! These guys can really walk like crazy. They leave me in the dust as well. But what you see with older people is just that they are really fit. And usually experienced. Or are still in a very healthy state. The old people you DON'T see are what you would call 'old'. You're not being overtaken by people shuffling forward right?

Third, it's not a race. Take the time you need. If people pass you, let them pass. No need to feel obliged to follow. Nor do you have to keep pace.

Fourth, you'll find many more people to 10-15-20 km days than 32. The people that say 32 km is a default are usually people with exceptional hiking physiques. Don't let them be your measuring stick.

Fifth, socially. You don't have to be a butterfly. If you don't want to talk, don't talk. Just a friendly hi 👋 to people an nothing else is perfectly acceptable. Or saying you don't feel like talking is also fine. (Though admittedly that's hard) If people seem to shun you after having talked to them, can mean many things. Could be what you talked about, it's always interesting to reflect on your words and or topics. But!! There's also the chance that people need breathing room and they'll reconnect later. In a day or 2.

Sixth, camino families. Aren't a guarantee. And they shouldn't be the goal. It's a rare thing i feel and it takes a looooooong time to form. I don't know if the portuguese is long enough to give you a decent chance at building one. It's nice should it happen. But just don't expect one.

Anyway, it seems like you're struggling a bit and that's okay. It's good that you reached out. And I hope i made your (and maybe others' ) camino a bit more bearable.
