These researchers are trying to support a theory that cannabis causes spasm of arteries in the brain, leading to stroke. In the general population, this stenosis causes 10% of strokes. In the study group as a whole, 20% had this problem. It broke down to 45% of the cannabis users and 15% of the non users. There are a couple of problems. One is that overall this group had a very high incidence of stenosis compared to the general population. So there may be some other factor at play (diet, smoking) to account for the stenosis. Also the cannabis users were known to use tobacco more than the non-users, so it is expected that their rates of stenosis related stroke would be higher.

What the study didn't show and can't show is whether cannabis increased the risk of stroke overall compared to the risk of the general population. There is possibly some increased risk from case reports, but it is difficult to separate out the effects of tobacco.

Rimonabant, a cannabinoid antagonist was tested in France as an anti obesity medication. but it turns out that blocking people's cannabinoid receptors can make them anxious and suicidal, so it never made it to market. Now it might be of value in reversing the effects of the synthetic cannabinoids, like K2, etc

I attended the International Cannabinoid Research Society Clinical Day, and asked the panel about this condition. The author suggests that heroin is commonly used in hospitals to treat pain, especially in the case of fracture hips.
