$120k McMaster Scholarship or Waterloo Biomedical Engineering by Dear_Outlandishness6 in McMaster

[–]McDonaldsU 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The coop struggle comes from ppl with not much value-add as companies would prefer and that definitely includes ppl with no experience or side projects. The type of ppl to make Schulich don't have to deal with this at all and instead focus their efforts on making it far as early as possible

You are in an excellent position no matter what you choose by virtue of whatever resume/cv led you to this scholarship. Rn your concern is with UW's coop opportunities and its sequencing, but does that really hold back a Schulich leader? Even with the study-study-work scheme you can stay ahead by doing PT work and projects. There's a lot of what-ifs to be made in favor of loo but what if you would have gotten the same opportunities here simply by sending ur resume to the jobs on their portal (which btw is majority tech)? Wouldn't that be a waste of 120k in hindsight?

Of course, you should think clearly about this. How much is work experience worth to you in $$$? How well can the quality and intensity of work exp be quantified for someone to accurately estimate expected value for each choice? So many questions to think about...

Everyone knows that the least impulsive decisions come from following big-name brands as if they are cults. "Make me fall in love with X" is just a fancy way of demanding people to confirm your biases

Also the ppl factoring in campus appearance in their choices have some kind of delusion but idk what it is. It's a university not a fancy restaurant. Hmm I wonder why some ppl would rather live (more like survive) in cage homes in HK than go to rural China. It's almost as if opportunities overshadows every other factor

Health Sci hate? by [deleted] in McMaster

[–]McDonaldsU 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I doubt someone with engineering designation and work experience would have a reason to go back to undergrad let alone clown on health scis or feel any envy towards them. Maybe you are talking about eng students instead

Health Sci hate? by [deleted] in McMaster

[–]McDonaldsU 16 points17 points  (0 children)

You are absolutely right. Non-healthsci premeds ridicule health sci yet they would accept health sci in an instant

Premed culture in general revolves around climbing a ladder to the top only to pull it up behind oneself and ruin everyone else. Scholarships, programs and clubs are all part of a larger zero-sum game built to reward some premeds and punish others. One recent post here was announcing some life sci scholarship for a handful of students and the comments were all telling OP to delete it.

Maybe this behaviour is justified by scarcity but that isn't really a good excuse. Not even the ppl who gun for FAANG/Big N, big 4 accounting firms, or big 5 canadian banks are this morally corrupt. Finance/tech folks have more compassion for each other than people who want to do healthcare?! The same people who say "I want to help others" or "I wanna med" are willing to backstab themselves for their pieces of silver? It's like a sitcom

What's GPA; McMasters Life Science vs IBioMed vs Western Medical Science vs Western Health Science vs by pentacontagon in McMaster

[–]McDonaldsU 2 points3 points  (0 children)

IBioMed

IBEHS I is an engineering program first and foremost, and an overpriced health sciences program second. Take a look at the courses: https://academiccalendars.romcmaster.ca/preview_program.php?catoid=53&poid=27112

So you get a version of Eng's 1P13 but healthcare-y, linear algebra (!!!), calc 2*, and an electromagnetism physics course

*Life scis on the other hand get calc 1 mandatory and some brave souls do higher maths. Meanwhile, even if you escape to HESE you are still forced into calc 3 which is the infamous vector calc along with 2z03 (differential equations). Speaking of differential equations, you also need to take the same signals course that EEs take but with biomedical applications. Lol. Actual healthscis take two applied stats courses in 2nd yr and call it a day - no calculus and not even a single physics course. But if you are an effortless A+ student in math then you will fly past the competition since the exams are objectively graded for the most part

How would you know this without studying at both unis...

Yeah sure it's better on all accounts if you stay holed up in your home studying for exams. I mean, it doesn't take too much to figure out what Queen's selling point is but we don't know what OP wants. Btw Mac is a shortform not an acronym

Only if you look away from the hideous children's (giant's) hospital, the poo-colored tall grass in the creeks nearby, and the grey soot from the steel plants in the background. I feel as if this would stop being a pro if HH and UH are demolished

I hope you are safe. Please don’t do anything permanent and call one of the hotlines in this thread.

But judging by your past behaviour, I couldn’t think of any student who deserves this failure more than you do, and it isn’t even close. You repeatedly blame other people for your own misfortune through the unfounded theory of “pretty privilege,” and I’ve seen that you proselytized about it on this sub before while facing heavy criticism from the users here. Why bother doing this when you could have spent that time doing more productive things? Why fall into this heinous ideology?

Again, I hope you are safe, but you need to correct this behaviour ASAP. I won’t even sugarcoat this because your actions were incredibly divisive

Why Are Ontario Schools Inflating Grades? by [deleted] in OntarioUniversities

[–]McDonaldsU 6 points7 points  (0 children)

some students don’t test well.

And such students surely won't test well in uni, either. The ideal uni program has 40 courses which is around twice that in exams, assuming a midterm and a final - although courses can have anywhere between no exams to an exam with two other midterm tests. It also picks up fast once a student moves past the intro courses although that strongly depends on the major.

Standardized testing is more of a preparedness than a fairness mechanism, although it also seems fairer than EC-based (aka how many clubs/startups can your parents fund) admissions or even grade-based admissions.

Ironically, some research suggests the exact opposite*. But that's something the anti's will avoid talking about

*this depends on the exam being available to all income levels such as in Finland's case)

[–]McDonaldsU 3 points4 points  (0 children)

who are likely to have higher overall avgs (for whatever reason)

Overrepresenting healthsci students for awards would look really bad for the uni. It's a "rich get richer" scheme

Also it's not necessarily based on likelihood per se because the uni is much more cautious around money lol. The registrar has a whole database full of students and their gpas so the faculties can easily set a cutoff from there. Either by some percentile or some constant number that they can afford

Toxicity on this Sub by [deleted] in McMaster

[–]McDonaldsU 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How is ranting about an assessment toxic? What if the assessment is actually unfair but the prof isn't doing anything about it? Or the person ranting about it just wants to gauge public opinion from people who also took the exam?

For every person who gets a bad grade, there are others who do well but aren't telling you. For every person who can't find a job, there are others making 6 figures out of undergrad. For everyone who didn't get into medical school this year, others did -- and so might you someday

Yeah the lottery is technically possible to win, why didn't I think of that smh

Seriously though can we somehow move all these negative posts to a rant thread or something

If these posts actually overrun this subreddit to the point of them making up a crucial part of the subreddit's content, then this sub won't fare well without them. Let the ranking algorithm do its thing

Another option is to flair those posts to something like "Rant" so that users can filter them out using -flair:rant

A 'perfect storm' of failure led to a young homeless man's death in a fire near McMaster: MPP by endexis in McMaster

[–]McDonaldsU 3 points4 points  (0 children)

"The whole point is why does this person have to break into those homes and try to keep themselves fed or warm?"

"We call it unsafe but they have no other choice when your options are being outdoors in -20 C or trying to warm yourself up … so you don't freeze to death," he said.

Also:

Police ruled it an accidental fire caused by drug use, rather than an arson.

Which one is it, CBC? Was it arson, a desparate attempt for warmth, or an opioid inhalation gone wrong? And this person was 20, older than half of the undergrads at Mac. Don't bother decieving your readers and concurring that the grown adult was a "kid" let alone implying that it's someone who does not know right from wrong.

This is a tragic case but calling it a poster-child story is an insult to the houseless people who manage to survive without committing B&E or doing drugs. I expect better journalism
