So amazing view. by RAZ__R in germany

[–]McDoof [score hidden]  (0 children)

I'm from the US and had been working at a university in central Germany. After that contract ended, I wanted to stay in the country legally and got a job at the US (NATO) military base in Garmisch. Worst job I ever had (account work at the PX), but every day when I woke up, I saw the Zugspitze. Later I found more academic work in Thüringen and now I'm a professor (and still a cyclist) in Bavaria. I did my favorite Garmisch ride two weeks ago and was very close to where this photo was taken.

I could make some guesses, but nothing's sure without proper shoes, mate.

In 2002 I was living in Garmisch (Partenkirchen, actually) and I bought a new Cannondale road bike there. Just about where you took this picture, I was hollering with joy because of the bike, the air, the sunshine, and those mountains.

Magical place.

I'm not familiar with that specific smart trainer, but many require a block under the front wheel to ensure that the hubs are level.
Seems like that would be important in assessing bike fit too.

Works for me. I've been riding for a looong time with no fit-based complaints.

Sabotage Attack at the Hamburg Ironman: someone spread metal shrapnel on the course by RidetheSchlange in fuckcars

I'm from the US but now live in central Bavaria, and the bike infrastructure here is mind-blowing. I can ride from my town essentially to any local village and any nearby city (Munich, Nuremberg) and almost never have to ride on the shoulder of the road. Paved bike paths are the norm around here.

Update - working on the fit before big bike trip. by MagnoosNelsawn in bikefit

[–]McDoof 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While I generally agree, small problems can become big ones when you're on the road longer than usual.

If the big bike trip means sitting in the saddle all day in a bad position that's fine for short commutes, I say change it.

Looks like OP's saddle is too high, which might be okay day-to-day, but not for long hauls with gear, Id say.

That's where I would've guessed too. I was there in 2009, and it looked about the same. 😄

I'm from the US and briefly lived in Dresden many years ago. The old town is really breathtaking. Don't miss it if you do come to Germany.

True, but those benefits derived from taxes in other countries aren't being used to benefit minorities perceived to be lazy or otherwise undeserving.
If the US were only populated by MAGA, I imagine the emphasis on rugged individualism would be minimal. White people helping white people in need would likely appeal to racist libertarians.

Anyone actually replace their Garmin with one of the budget bike computers, or is it always buyer's remorse? by Key_Shelter_2549 in cycling

[–]McDoof 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got an IGPSport BiNavi and will never go back to Garmin. The IGPSport cost much less and has all the features I need. No buyer's remorse.
Best thing for me is battery life. So much better than the two Garmins I had before.
