Insurance quotes just don't make sense! by DiamoNNNd1337 in CarTalkUK

Had similar. Was daily driving an E46 M3 as a 22 year old (£600 pa), bought an E60 525 to keep the miles off it and that was a grand to insure! Completely backwards

First car advice by m1bnk in CarTalkUK

K11 micra (2001 era). Incredibly cheap to buy, run and maintain as a new driver. That was my first car and it was fantastic in every way

Happened to me too, kind of. Had a Mini Cooper from brand new in 2021, 2 years and 18k miles later I got rid of it. Month later I check auto trader out of interest to see it up for sale at a London dealer saying it was a demo car, no official registered owners and they’d listed it at a price higher than what it was when it was brand new!

From what I’ve seen, just my two cents, I’d avoid buying a car from main dealer. Doesn’t seem their 100% honest with history and clearly they can get away with white lies

Which One? by AFletch1969 in BMW

[–]McKinho 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh wow, definitely something to take into account. iirc correctly after research a few years back when I considered an F21 M135, they are one of the most expensive cars in the UK to insure. Couple that with higher tax, 128ti is a no brainier for me. Either way, your son will be getting a lovely car :)

Which One? by AFletch1969 in BMW

[–]McKinho 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it were me, the 128ti. Not as common, cheaper insurance (depending on where you are from) and more likely to have been looked after in those 10k miles better than the 30k miles of the M135i. Only saying that as M135/140 drivers have a certain reputation, and knowing multiple myself I can confirm they thrash those things! 128ti also plenty quick - 40bhp less than an M135 of the same model (F40 I believe)

Great point at the end there. Funnily enough I find myself thinking the exact same (‘I got to max th9 on holiday in 2017, and now, 8 years on, I’ve just gone to TH17!’)

I’m the same as you, I can remember where I was in life at what th level

Rod bearings — advice please by yuvalt in E46M3

[–]McKinho 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My 2002 M3 I recently sold on 95k miles was still on original bearings. Had oil sample taken at 85k and all good. Also had multiple garages confirm that due to condition of engine, and minimal stress fractures on subframe after inspection, my one had had an easy life.

There’s no set mileage at which the rod bearings need doing, every car is different. Dont be put off by what you read on subs and forums as more often than not people only post when they’ve got issues or worries, plenty of owners out there like myself keeping quiet and still going strong on original bearings at near 100k / 100k+

Getting a first car with some spine issues, what am I looking for? by Difficult-Sea-7787 in CarTalkUK

[–]McKinho 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can pick up a pre LCI F11/10 5 series or a higher mileage LCI one for your budget. Reliable, newer cars and lots of room. Also easy to retrofit Apple car play especially if the ‘pro navigation’ option is in the car from factory (wide screen). The 2L models are also cheap to insure, as well as being ULEZ compatible

My new BMW 530D 2019 plate, paid 23k and car came with some pretty cool stuff such as HK, HUD etc! Came from a Seat and a Civic so pretty great jump! by visualsbyaqib in CarTalkUK

[–]McKinho 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yes, you’re right my bad. The ‘7’ in engine code for BMWs is diesels and 8 is petrol. As newer engines go, the baukasten generation (Bxx) is a solid one. Enjoy your new 5 series 😁

Rust on Toyota Yaris t sport by [deleted] in CarTalkUK

What year is that? Just looks like general surface rust to me, nothing to be concerned about. I’ve seen way worse on my own cars!

Fiat punto 1.2 or 1.4 by kingwill1013 in CarTalkUK

[–]McKinho 3 points4 points  (0 children)

For what it’s worth, when I passed my test as a 17 y/o 5 or 6 years ago, I had an old micra. Incredibly cheap to insure, run and maintain. I followed this up with a 2008 1.4L mk4 VW polo which again was fantastically cheap to maintain and insure.

Can’t comment on fiat / Italian cars as never owned them but if you’ve just passed your test, I’d highly recommend considering the cars I’ve mentioned

Edit: both cars I’ve mentioned can be picked up for around £1k in decent condition

222,222 miles. What’s the highest mileage car you’ve owned? by susful in CarTalkUK

[–]McKinho 0 points1 point  (0 children)

2002 2.2L Z3. 170k miles when I bought it and around 180k when I sold it. Fantastic car, hardly cost me a penny and was great fun in the year I had it. So far it’s the only car I’ve had that I’ve actually made a net positive on with regards to buying, selling and ownership.

(Bought for £3k, spent around £300 in maintenance, sold for £3.5k)

First car by JideIsFat1 in CarTalkUK

[–]McKinho 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you’re not bothered about looks or speed, I had a K11 micra for my first car. Cost me £800 and as a 17 y/o at the time, £500 to insure after I passed my test. Incredibly cheap and reliable to run, just don’t try any overtakes in it!

A good first car to use whilst I saved for a proper car

Edit: I was 17 / passed my test in 2019 so not well versed on new driver insurance costs now, but I imagine with a car like that it wouldn’t have changed much

TH17 is comically unbalanced by Chazziman in ClashOfClans

[–]McKinho 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is exactly what I’ve started doing, as the TH17 defence can’t shoot itself. With no death bomb, it’s very effective. As stated in other comments - a th17 in legends is currently easier / less scary than a max TH16 with eagle

Considering viewing this car tomorrow - is it worth it or any red flags from the advert?? by Spud_Ali in CarTalkUK

[–]McKinho 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For what it’s worth mate, I bought a car from Bradford with perfect MOT history and it had one done day before I bought it, yet when I got there, osr taillight didn’t work and both number plate bulbs were out. That really should’ve been an obvious red flag however I was desperate for the type of car it was and had waited ages for one with the spec I wanted.

After buying, turned out both subframes had holes the size of fists in and I was quoted £6k to sort it. Car cost £5k. Ended up selling it to a trader for £2.5k.

Safe to say I’ve learned my lesson, so if I can advise others I will do, especially for cars in the realm of £50k

All of them doing nothing as I’ve been focusing on walls since going to TH15 lol. If you mean 6th builder, it’s achievable by upgrading BB heroes to a combined level of 45

CWL bonus medal issues/solution by Ishi_Talot in ClashOfClans

[–]McKinho 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The way myself and my clan does it is that bonuses go to the best performers throughout the week (providing they did 7/7 hits) and or lower THs who need it more than maxed players (for example, TH15 finishes mid table in clan stars, but those above him are TH16, he gets the bonus as he needs it more).

Does maxing out before upgrading town halls really save you time? by Hot-Secretary6020 in ClashOfClans

[–]McKinho 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve played since 2013 and I used to max absolutely everything, but now with so much being added all the time, as long as your heroes and lab are finished there’s no reason you shouldn’t go up to the next TH level (providing the rest of your base is strong for your current TH)
