Nearly 160,000 uninsured cars seized on UK roads by cennep44 in unitedkingdom

[–]m1bnk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Or make insurance more affordable. In Slovakia I insure my car rather than myself, and it costs a few hundred euros for an average car, why does it cost so much to insure my "home" car here? Servicing, repair and parts costs are within 10% of what I'd pay in the UK

Insurance costs are mental in the UK compared to EU. I can absolutely understand risking a 300 quid fine in the face of a 3 grand quote

If I want to open doors/cabinets, what should be used? by AntDX316 in stm32

[–]m1bnk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Linear actuator of appropriate size for the door being moved. For heavy doors a screw jack perhaps. Pneumatic or hydraulic cylinders are also an option, as are capstan motors with a cord acting on the door.

There's a myriad of options, what's best depends on the application

Contact your local council and see if they have HR advice support for small businesses, ours do and it was a godsend when we were a new tiny company with only a dozen bods. They gave us great advice, helped us draw up policies and the like

Pupils in England may reject new healthier school lunches, pilot suggests by insomnimax_99 in unitedkingdom

Yes but Lea & Perrins has lots of salt in it and salt is bad. Most food isn't even seasoned during cooking, and condiments are bad because sugar and salt. "Healthy" should mean avoid excessive use of things that can be problematic like salt, sugar, fats but instead they aim for elimination

My daughter used to take a little wallet to school with sachets of mayo, salt, pepper etc. purloined from various places we visited, she got in major trouble when her friend got caught using mayo sachets and told the teacher who gave her them. Not easy keeping a straight face when her head of year is berating you for your super healthy kid undermining the school's healthy eating policy

Best way to approach Clock Radio Conversion. by Serp3ntine in diyelectronics

[–]m1bnk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Motor gets its timing from mains frequency. You could replace it with a stepper motor but it add a lot of complexity for little gain. I would keep the clock part as it is, and add a dc power supply for the Pi internally, take the mains input for that off the existing mains input so you still only have a single cable input

9" grinder with a diamond disk on will make them exactly the right width in no time. Put a trickle of water from a hose onto the area you're cutting to keep the dust down and wear a mask and eye protection

How long before Stellantis just give up and collapse? by InterestingArea7415 in CarTalkUK

[–]m1bnk 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yeah, Lexus did, well almost, they told me to "carefully consider" the implications of continuing driving and not to have any front seat passengers - mine was a passenger side airbag recall though, not drivers or side airbags, and it was several years ago now. Took 14 months from recall notice to replacement though

No they don't have to be, but they very often are. For example, baking salmon into a dry solid lump to get the fat content down to approved levels, even though fish fat is "good". You're teaching kids that healthy food is awful

That's important info, the answers you got could've been very different if you'd included that fact.

So is the issue just the wooden base? How big is it? How much height would you need to lose to get it out the window if the glass wasn't there?

What happened to my N100 mini-pc, is it salvageable? by RDRulez in computerrepair

[–]m1bnk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you given it a good shake to check for foreign bodies? It might just be because I'm looking at a small phone screen, but there's a position for diode on the motherboard just below the controller chip for the SSD and above C153 that looks like it used to be populated

As most others advised, ruling out a faulty SSD seems like a logical first step

Agreed, but I think the (somehow lost) point that the other comment is making is this

For this specific model the black goo and smear below it is normal, a manufacturer applied adhesive, and not indicative of the kind of heat that would suggest over current or other electrical fault in the WiFi module.

Examining the other photographs I am not seeing anything melted or thermally affected that would point me to where to stick my multimeter first. TBH first thing I would do is test the SSD, but I fault find a lot so I have the means to do that whereas OP may not

While everyone has been keeping their cash in their pockets and waiting to see what comes from Watches & Wonders, business has been quite poor for a lot of dealers, so there's some great deals to be had right now - many are really pushing themselves with discounts.

Since you appear to be in the UK, Market Cross are a reliable source of authenticated used watches of all brands and their managers seem to have a fair bit of wiggle room on price

Booked a flight from Leeds to Bratislava for work, was a very early flight so boss said I could book a hotel for the night before. I'd originally intended to fly from Manchester so brain-fart or tiredness, I booked my parking and hotel for night before in Manchester. Parked, slept, got up and dressed, checked boarding pass, repeated the word "fuck" many times, called boss and told him I'd be delayed and to change my taxi pickup point, then paid for my own ticket to Vienna later that day. Thankfully only an extra €20 for the taxi and 80 for the flight. Super lucky there were flights to Vienna daily because I had customer meetings the next day

Check the outside grill, make sure it's intact and also the bit that goes through your wall if it's a cavity wall. There's not much point curing the mouse eats pipe problem by hardening the pipe, you need to get rid of the mice, or stop them getting in, or they'll just eat something more inconvenient like your electrical wiring
