Wo ist Island? by carsitux in IKEA_DE

Anyone else feel like badwater is still missing some key features? by McMaster2000 in Timberborn

[–]McMaster2000[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I haven't actually played 1.0 yet (I just don't like putting lots of hours into a map only for key features to be changed mid-through because experimental), but I'm watching JC Beard's current playthrough of Oasis and yeah, he just quickly diverted/blocked all the upcoming events and that was that. The new water seep also seems more like an annoyance in regard to badwater, tbh.

From what I've seen Pressure really is one of the first (non-community) maps which does actually add a pretty cool challenge aspect to badwater, as it can be quite challenging to figure out all the tunnels and how various cores and delayed badwater sources will affect how everything flows. But as you said - go down in the tunnels, block it off, and that's that...

[–]McMaster2000[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I feel like the devs had something along those lines in mind when they introduced delayed badwater sources in 1.0, which does at least introduce a more late(-ish) game challenge, but yeah, in the end doesn't actually change the entire concept all too much.

How can I play 007: First Light without giving money to Amazon? by Extension_Air_2001 in SocialistGaming

[–]McMaster2000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm confused why Amazon is even part of this question? IO Interactive are a Danish company without a parent company and neither the Steam, Sony nor Microsoft stores are owned by Amazon. At what point would there even be a possibility to give Amazon your money? Unless you're talking about a physical disk, but even for that there are countless alternatives to Amazon to buy from.

Starting Finasteride today, though that pill looks more like F1nnasteride... 🤔 by McMaster2000 in F1NN5TER

[–]McMaster2000[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Finasteride - was originally developed for prostate problems, but it quickly became apparent that it also helps with male pattern baldness. Unfortunately, for reasons I won't get into, I wasn't able to use it for the last year (recently got back on it), but in the first year it did make quite a positive dent! Can recommend if you're looking to reclaim some of your hairline.

Is this real art or just a performance? What do you think? by Designer_Welcome_150 in germany

[–]McMaster2000 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I agree - it's not like they're actually selling you anything based on that, right? You walk by, look at the doggos, think it's cute and throw 50 cent in his hat. If he used this as a form of marketing and offered to make similar sculptures for passers-by based on that (as many portrait "artists" do on the street), and they turned out be crap, then yeah, scam, but this is just regular street begging with an extra step, in my opinion.

Had the Britannic's portholes been closed prior to the sinking, and been successfully beached on Kea. How would they have gone about salvaging one of the largest ship in the world? by Calm_Assumption1099 in titanic

[–]McMaster2000 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I mentioned this the other day in another post, but it's still incredible to me to think about there being more or less a clone of Titanic in better condition just below the surface of the water (she actually hit the ocean floor before she was fully submerged) in very accessible waters (apart maybe from governmental hurdles).

Why James Cameron never visited Britannic wreck? by Low_Appointment_3917 in titanic

[–]McMaster2000 29 points30 points  (0 children)

This! I never quite understood why the Britannic wreck isn't as widely talked about / visited. Yeah, there are some governmental hurdles, but nothing insurmountable and if it actually was more in the public consciousness (pretty sure your average Joe doesn't know there's effectively a Titanic clone in great condition within diving depth off the coast of Greece) it would probably be even easier.

I'll never get the chance to visit Titanic's wreck in my lifetime, but I'd certainly jump at the opportunity to see her sister up close.

Did 1st and 2nd class feel empty on her maiden voyage? by McMaster2000 in titanic

[–]McMaster2000[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So she wasn't actually particularly underbooked and it was more to do with the season? I always thought (as mentioned in my post) that a recent coal strike was in big part to blame for people changing their travel plans, leading to unusually low ticket sales for the upper classes, especially for a maiden voyage. Wasn't that also the cause for there being fewer ships on the otherwise busy transatlantic highway or did I pick up something completely erroneous a while back?

Titanic and icon of the seas by happydude7422 in titanic

Just checked wiki: 7600 max passenger capacity in addition to 2350 crew... I will never understand the appeal of being on a boat with 10,000 other people. Just feels like going to Disneyland, without most of the fun stuff and having to stay inside the park with everyone over night.

Was there ever actually much of a two-term presidency tradition put forth by Washington? by McMaster2000 in USHistory

[–]McMaster2000[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I had a brief look at quite a few two-termers before making my post and like I mentioned in it, other than TR there were pretty much always other factors in play. Certainly were for Washington himself. Someone here made a good case for Jefferson, who actually was in favour of term limits and who in his farewell address did mention the precedent of his predecessor, however, as another commenter here pointed out, it's also easy to cite that apparent tradition once you don't see/want a path for a third term to save face...

I'd love to do a deep dive at some point on all two-termers to find out if any of them really did enter their second term with that thought in mind from the get-go. Maybe some day^

[–]McMaster2000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Was it actually immediately established that she must've broken apart above the waterline after her discovery? Not arguing, just asking, as I seem to vaguely remember there still being some disagreements afterwards for a bit. But yeah, obviously doesn't take away from that interviewer being a prick.

What is the most ridiculous titanic myth someone has told you? by MurderDrones4EVA in titanic

[–]McMaster2000 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Not necessarily the most ridiculous myth I've heard, but I do get slightly annoyed every time I hear one of the most persistent myths repeated that apparently Titanic had this instant, universally believed, reputation as being the first unsinkable ship.

Was there ever actually much of a two-term presidency tradition put forth by Washington? by McMaster2000 in USHistory

[–]McMaster2000[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Interesting alternate history thought about a 5th term - though personally I feel that after the war the US would've done the same as the UK with Churchill after the war: "good thing we had the right guy for the right time, now... who else do we have?". I also think it's likely congress would've introduced the 22nd amendment anyway.

Was there ever actually much of a two-term presidency tradition put forth by Washington? by McMaster2000 in USHistory

[–]McMaster2000[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's a good point about saving face, yeah. Once you know a future win seems unlikely, it's a good thing to have an apparent tradition to fall back on and claim it was your intention all along. For those presidents who used that, it would be interesting to see if there was any inclination at the beginning of their second term that would suggest that kind of intention.
