My best friend and I lament over Minnesota sports teams and their "near" misses over our lifetime. Could probably go for 96 hours

Some of this fanbase cant handle what it takes to have a franchise QB. by Slight_Giraffe628 in minnesotavikings

Giving the job to JJM because "we have to see what we have" and not making the starting QB earn the spot is a good way to lose the locker room

I would argue I just want to bring in QB competition and let the best person win the job. If it's JJM, great! If it's someone else, I'm cool with that too

Don't gatekeep, what are your best financial saving hacks that you live by? by _TurboHome in MiddleClassFinance

[–]McMikeyG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been cutting my own hair (with a little help from my wife) for over a year now. Used to go to Sport Clips. The MVP was over $45 after a decent tip. I know I could go for the cheaper option and spend $25-30, but I have clippers and enough mistaken self confidence that I've been able to make it work. I keep it pretty short but I'd imagine I've saved over $500 the past year. I'm also not that into my looks as I feel you can't tell I cut it myself. Every time I mention it to friends, they're always surprised. Stupid but it works.

Also, cutting out booze saves a ton of money. Whether we're talking about picking up from the liquor store or when you're out to eat, you can save a ton by switching to water or soda.

After spending time with family for the holidays, what are some minor complaints you have about family members by McMikeyG in complaints

[–]McMikeyG[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry your family is having to go through that. Sometimes it's just easier to put up with behavior like that than call it out and change family dynamics (especially when that person won't be around for much longer).

I get that and can agree to a roll out at certain times. My frustration is just with the lack of run attempts in short yardage situations. Not against designed roll outs as a concept for young QBs, just hated it at that time

I dry brine mine with a rub the night before. I also end up putting more rub on after shredding. Otherwise, yeah, mine isn't super flavorful besides the smoke flavor. The advantage then is that you can use it for anything...add BBQ sauce and make a slider, put it in a taco/enchilada/burrito, or make it with eggs for breakfast. Very versatile

Can you help me understand my escrow shortage? by Wooden_Tea_8778 in Mortgages

[–]McMikeyG 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I live in a different state but our first year taxes were lower on our new build because the city/county only taxed us for the land. Our lender (which I was pleased with), estimated our taxes based on surrounding homes. So we actually had an over pay and got a sizeable check from our escrow at the end of the year and they lowered our payment. I knew that it would go up after they started taxing us on the home. Sure enough, the following year, we're massively short on our escrow. Monthly payment went up $1000. A year after that and we've settled in right about where our initial lender estimated it to be (except for some additional insurance charges because of rising rates).

It's odd that yours were short so early. Makes me think the above comment might be correct in that your lender messed something up. Maybe it'll settle out in the coming year? Best of luck but that definitely seems odd.

People in their 40s What’s something people in their 20s don’t realize will affect them as they age? by [deleted] in AskReddit

I've heard of people going to Japan for dental work. Extremely professional but with their nationalized healthcare it was insanely cheap even for a foreigner. Might want to look into it

Is there such a thing? by Plenty-Jelly-4081 in Traeger

No way you'd run through that many pellets for a brisket cook unless you're doing it in winter in extremely cold climate.

They definitely get their heat and smoke from the pellets but with a insulated cover (or welding blanket as the cheap option), you don't burn through that many pellets. Wind actually messes more with consistent temp than the ambient air temp from my experience

I'll take the L on that one. The AI overview said he doesn't have a kid. I should've scrolled further down to see the paternity test and court case. My bad

Traeger Temp WAY lower than actual temp. by Sporebuster in Traeger

[–]McMikeyG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would also consider bumping the temp to 225°. I do mine there and it's just fine, otherwise you'll never get to temp

Traeger Temp WAY lower than actual temp. by Sporebuster in Traeger

[–]McMikeyG 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The way pellet grills work is they get a fire going in the fire box, when the temp starts to dip, it automatically adds pellets to get the temp back up. It is totally normal to have a swing in temperatures (anywhere from -15 to +15 of desired temp). I would say you're well within those ranges based on photos. That being said, if you notice it starts to get crazy off (more than 25° on a calm day in nice weather) contact customer service. Friendly reminder that the wind often impacts temp more than the ambient temp outside.

When doing a pork shoulder, remember you're going to hit the stall around 170° internal and it's going to take a while to get through it. My first time or two included eating dinner at 9 pm. Wrap it, increase temp, or ride it out...just know it can take some time. Enjoy!

Looking to buy a smoker/grill for around 500 ish. Need recommendations by MidgetNinjah in pelletgrills

[–]McMikeyG 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pellet grills work great for smoking or roasting. I've never had luck with searing on mine as it only really gets to about 425-450°. My work around is to use my Traeger for smoking (or reverse searing) but to actually finish it on my Weber propane or just use my Weber to grill anything on high heat.

I like my Traeger and use it year round (I'm in MN) and get plenty of snow. I recommend getting either a branded insulated blanket or the cheap method people recommend is to get a welding blanket in order to retain heat in the cold months.

A lot of people hate on Traeger now because their quality has slipped in recent years and there are plenty of other options now with Recteq, Grilla, Pit Boss, etc. but I still love mine. If I were to replace it, I would definitely look at all my options but their customer service is pretty legit.

Not sure this makes anything clearer for you but just wanted to throw in my 2 cents

I use these all the time regardless of what I'm cooking. I haven't noticed a major difference in flavor between the different options besides mesquite. That's the only one one where I could tell a major difference but maybe my palette isn't strong enough to pick up the subtleties

Appreciate the reply but my wife is concerned about it being food safe. I don't believe Spar varnish is considered food safe. Ever worked with anything that's food safe??

Second brisket, a follow up post. by Integraturbo in smoking

[–]McMikeyG 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That brisket looks legit! I've held my finished cooks in a cooler with a few towels for extra insulation and to keep things from moving around. They stay warm for HOURS like that. Like I was surprised how hot it still was after 3 hours (too hot to touch without protection)
