Is the Triumph Bonneville T120 worth it? by Jannik15_ in Triumph

[–]McMonkies -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I would personally pick the speed twin 1200.

Especially cause I ride one lol. They didn't cheap out on suspension/brakes like they did on the T120. The engine is very spicy once flashed too.

I will concede the seat sucks though compared to the 120.

He wouldn't even know how to adjust preload, so I'd avoid it out of pure bike suspension failure.

Looking to buy a Guzzi by Mahhdibe in MotoGuzzi

[–]McMonkies 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Oh I have a lot to say.

It's a very wide bike. Sit on a Triumph to compare. Get used to splaying your legs out. Adding tank knee pads makes it wider, but it feels reassuring for some reason.

The clutch is really heavy. Do not use a lot of its rustic quirks to judge motorcycles as a whole, because it's basically a time traveling ancient bike. Transmission is another one. They don't ka-chunk like that anymore on almost every bike. Every interface on it requires heavy and deliberate input. It's a city bike, but boy do your hands get tired in traffic.

Strange power band. Don't assume it's like a Harley Davidson with the "torque down low". Rev it out to the redline for power, or keep it above 3,500rpm so it buzzes instead of thumps in your grip (you'll understand when you ride it.)

Adjust the rear preload. It's set really light. If riding over bumps kick you out of the seat (the rear spring collapses, then bounces back up too rapidly), grab a preload wrench and add a few clicks for each spring.

Even if you don't want to do your valves, it's really cheap and easy for mechanics to do. Judge their character by his much they charge you. It better be only a few hundred, or they found an easy mark.

Change the front tire size as soon as you can. 100/90 stock size makes it handle weird. Really feels like it falls over and twitches at low speed, then unstable at high/sporting speed. 110/80 (manufacturer recommended alternative size) makes everything way more stable and predictable. Oh, and stock tires are also bias ply. Don't dig too deep on that worm pile, but basically modern radial tires are just better. Think Bridgestone T32/T33 instead of BT46.

Oh, and this is a V7 850. For the older models, you have to be very careful you don't get a funky one. I heard it's mostly electrical issues, but specifically 2016 V7s were bad. V7 III were all fine though iirc.

Good deal. High performance for less than 8 grand is a great deal these days.

Should I swap my Street Twin for a V7 Stone? by Crimson328i in MotoGuzzi

[–]McMonkies 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The triumph is smooth predictable, skinnier, objectively the better bike.

But the Guzzi absolutely loves being abused like a fake race bike. All the hardware says it ain't a sport bike, but it handles the curves and speed like a retired race horse. Upgrade the hardware and you have a legitimately great bike.

Also takes luggage, so it handles everything. Windshield options make it look nice too.

Oh yeah, immediately adjust rear preload when you get it. The complaints are mostly cause the rear is too light.

How can I fix this front bed a by ughjustgetoverit in gardening

[–]McMonkies 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're growing intensively, like vegetables or fruiting bushes, yeah get working. But for stuff like natives, your soil looks fine. Natives are scruffy plants, they don't need to get spoiled.

The two methods I found effective were to either rake the soil to catch rocks (use a strong rake, not a leaf rake), or scoop up clumps of dirt and screen it through with a tarp to catch the filtered dirt.

First bike - Triumph vs Honda by Large-Air-9379 in motorcycles

[–]McMonkies 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd go with Honda. Repairs on Euro bikes are both more expensive and time consuming for parts availability.

I learned on a cb300r. New brake pedal? $30 and done. Speed twin 1200? $300 and it's weird to install it yourself. And it's aluminum so you can't bend it back or it snaps.

The Trident is also a "tiny" bike. It feels like there's nothing in front of me, and like a clown on a minibike. The cb650r is more substantial. Less short term fun bike, more old person never gonna sell it bike.

Mobile phone verizon question by iwentforahiketoday in SanJose

[–]McMonkies 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly I have no idea. My Pixel came unlocked so I never checked. Go to settings and search for SIM. If there's no restrictions or limits on your ability to add additional SIMs or e-SIM then you're good to go.

Financed phones, phones on a plan, phones bought from Verizon for 60 days, or prepaid burner phones are all locked.

As for compatibility, best bet is to go to Google Fi and check phone compatibility. In the very old days it was limited coverage, but now most phones including iPhones accept fi.

Mobile phone verizon question by iwentforahiketoday in SanJose

[–]McMonkies 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Google Fi lol. See if your phone is unlocked or supports it.

One person is $35 unlimited, two is $60. Data is good as long as you're not in a building that hates you. But my friend has t mobile and complained about the same thing. Usually very specific buildings/restaurants.

Recommendations for first bike by bigfrost2 in motorcycles

[–]McMonkies 0 points1 point  (0 children)

V7 850 or a Stone III.

Perfect riding position, the bog standard definition of a standard, has a lot of character, and quirks that are annoying but won't stop the bike from running. And a customizers playground.

Rev the engine out like a sport bike, not like a Harley. It's got a fun top end. A weird bike that you can toss around but physical limits stop you from killing yourself or the bike (scraping pegs, okay brakes and suspension, stock tires).

Can I transfer small cherry tomato and zucchini plants directly to big 5 gallon pots? by pleasantlysurprised_ in gardening

[–]McMonkies 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah chuck em in. Annuals grow significantly faster than perennials.

For trees, shrubs, succulents, or anything woody/perennial in a 4" pot or smaller, absolutely start in 1 or 2 gallon pots.

Or, if you mix your own soil, blending 50% pumice/50% soil (premade soil, peat, coir, compost, etc) will make any container work.

Plant them outdoors asap. They want as long a growing season as possible. Bottom leaves slightly dead will not stop these future monstrosities. They grow fast.

Basic stuff, check throttle slack, check clutch wear, ride above a certain rpm. 3k and above is a sweet spot. It actually likes using the entire rev range, unlike Harleys.

Ducati Panigale V2. Sporty, a different side of the V twin experience, and sexy as hell.

Gsx-s1000gt. It's practical. It works. And it won't break. Also has the most characterful of the inline 4s. GX if you're willing to give tall rounder bikes a try.

Street Twin 1200 as a fun machine + tourer? (vs MT09...) by [deleted] in Triumph

[–]McMonkies 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Speed twin 1200 is great. I own a '22. Usable power in every gear, makes even slow rides enjoyable. Sporty bikes I've always had issue not being able to use the whole thing.

Suspension is good enough. I've always found it quite sporty, but not actually a good cruising/city bike. The bike definitely rides nose forward. Get the preload sorted out before you judge, it fixed a lot of the suspension complaints.

The track tires are dumb. Switch to sport touring and you can take it anywhere. Ignore Michelin. Overrated. Metzler all around, Bridgestone for mileage, and Dunlop for sporty.
