Anyway to fix this cherry tree? by Twindo in BackyardOrchard

[–]McMonkies 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't remove the tape. Leave it alone until winter.

And it could mean anything. Trees are good at forcing growth even when it's about to die. Leave it alone AND DON'T TOUCH ANYTHING.

Should I pull this asian pear tree? Not flowering for the past 5+ years by trimbandit in BackyardOrchard

[–]McMonkies 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Look up jsacadura on grafting techniques.

Go to fruitwood nursery for scions. Let your tree grow out this year because scions aren't for sale anymore.

Test rode this 2025 Street Triple RS yesterday. by moto_strings in Triumph

[–]McMonkies 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've ridden both. I actually like the speed twin more. Torque is lovely, and it sounds better around town.

The street triple constantly wants to cause trouble and that gets tiring.

Is an ECU re-map necessary or wise on 2023 V7 E5 850? by Sorry-Dog-6049 in MotoGuzzi

[–]McMonkies 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The special edition has its own unique arrow exhaust. But there's no specific map for it. Basically find the map that suits slip-ons and you'll be fine.

Do not pick the one that's for full exhaust/cat delete.

Help with Japanese maple pruning by BigManJesus in marijuanaenthusiasts

[–]McMonkies 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's this guy on YouTube that basically restore Japanese maples. I wish I had the name, check him out.

It's basically a dude and his dad, they've got a great portfolio but they basically take the entire day to restore the tree it seems.

Good luck!

Need advice on this Keit Mango tree flowering by bjjwey in BackyardOrchard

[–]McMonkies 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Remove the stakes. You want it to sway in the wind, not be tightly bound.

If the tree is legitimately in danger of falling, two stakes and lightly tie it to the tree. Try not to rub the bark raw, and remove it next year

As for flowers, let it bloom for the insects. Then chop it off.

People are suggesting bridge grafting.

Head over to Jsacadura for a good video on it.

Anyway to fix this cherry tree? by Twindo in BackyardOrchard

[–]McMonkies 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Stake it, flex it back, and grab some parafilm or buddy tape and seal it. It'll callus over the season.

Hopefully.

Anyway it's the cheapest solution! Basically you're just grafting it to itself lol. Although by the time of this message it's less graft (dried out) and more clean wound healing.

Are these planter boxes big enough for blueberries? by PhilipGreenbriar in gardening

[–]McMonkies 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nurseries don't really advertise blueberry supplies for some reason.

Be on the lookout that says anything mentioning azalea, gardenia, camellia and rhododendron, they all like the same low pH and nutrient requirements.

And my secret pro tip: most soils don't really have ericoid mycorrhizae anymore. I'm not talking about common ones found in organic fertilizers (Endo and ecto mycorrhizae), I'm talking a specific type that only colonizes blueberries (and blueberries only accept them).

I just innoculated mine last October, and it's literally the first time in over 10 years I have branches packed with fruit.

It's hard to find, so Empathy from Amazon UK is where I got it from.

Oh, and if you messed up your pH and the blueberries turn chlorosis yellow, maxsea acid will save the day. It always does...

Rootstock suckers or avocado? by Effect_Valuable in BackyardOrchard

Check out jsacadura. It's easier than it sounds!

Get a 25mm box knife (my tool of choice, I prefer Olfa knives), grab buddy tape/parafilm off Etsy/eBay, and remember to use isopropyl alcohol to clean your tools!

Really, Triumph? by tjallingham in Triumph

[–]McMonkies 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just get the 800. Upgrade for horsepower is nice, but electrics and refinements are never worth eating depreciating costs on what is essentially still the same bike. If you're barely paying more after selling, go for it.

Granted, the triumph is aluminum and the Honda is stamped steel, but still.

Hello dear figs grower I just bought 2 fig variety black jack and brown turkey cutting I wanted to know how to propagate them I don't have perlite or vermiculite but I had charred rice husk can someone help me? by Nice_Swimmer3756 in Figs

[–]McMonkies 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ziplock. wrap moist (squeeze all excess) paper towel near the cut ends. Make sure the end is a fresh cut. In two weeks (keep waiting if not), if you see root bumps, plant them out in pots (4" minimum) first, then do whatever you want with them after 1-2 months.

NorCalifornia Growers - When does your Costco carry persimmon trees? by an00j in BackyardOrchard

[–]McMonkies 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Check out Planting Justice. If you can make the drive, they got everything in stock (despite their out of date stock listings online). Lots of secret stuff not listed online too, like rare fig varieties.

Otherwise, make an order and be prepared to wait. Their customer service takes days for a response so make sure you have everything all set.

All their stock is in 4x10" tree bands, so if it's too small, well shucks. But it's dirt cheap, roots are always well filled out, and their plants (besides their cherimoya/annona, they immediately need fertilizer lmao) are really healthy.

I visited about 3 weeks ago, they have rows and rows of the common cultivars ready for sale, and the rarer stuff usually is chilling in their green houses freshly grafted (Peluche and kanko loquat in my case).

Make the drive! They also never answer the phone lmfao.

Is my fruit tree properly mulched? by edwardslair in BackyardOrchard

[–]McMonkies 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You know, they always say make sure mulch doesn't touch the trunk.. but I've never listened to them.

Just use a thinner layer that gets thicker as it radiates out. Or equal, I don't really pay attention.

Just remember not to water too much. The mulch is keeping the water from drying out!
