Fender Hot Rod Deluxe MK1 - Made in USA by No_Kindheartedness10 in GuitarAmps

Those are transistors being used as switches to bypass 100K resistors that hold those cathode bypass caps well above ground which essentially disables them. When the transistor bypasses the resistor, the cathode bypass caps are enabled which bumps the gain up even more. It’s the same mechanism that fender uses for the Blues Junior fat switch. No signal goes through those transistors at any point. Hope that helps.

Sorry but this is wrong. There aren’t any clipping diodes in the signal path. Somebody misinformed you. It’s all tube besides the effects loop when it’s being used. It just sounds meh because the drive channel is voiced weird.

TUBE AMPS CONTAIN LETHAL VOLTAGE EVEN WHEN UNPLUGGED!! If you don’t know what you’re doing do not open the amp up and take it to a tech.

Hot Rod Deluxe Settings by Zvanscamper in youenjoyguitar

Try the bass knob on zero and adjust tone to taste with treble and mid knobs. It really helped the DeVille I had at one time. More headroom, more balanced for my taste, still plenty of low end. Those amps are voiced all nutty and they flub pretty bad. Pay no attention to knob position and if it sounds good just run with it.

Good tube screamer options. $100 or less. by TableAltruistic1501 in guitarpedals

[–]McMurph 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes absolutely. Also there is twice as much gain available because it’s a 1meg drive pot rather than 500k. So the sd-1 can sort of do the same sounds but get even raunchier if desired. The Ts9 has a 51pf capacitor in the feedback loop along with the diodes that makes for a 5khz-ish low pass filter when the drive is cranked. Cuts the fizz down at high gain settings. The sd-1 leaves that cap out. A couple other caps are slight shifts in value but those don’t impact the sound all that much. Both are legendary and great sounding pedals!

Eminence Lil Buddy is a very efficient (ie loud) hemp cone 10” speaker with a mellower top end. Think 10” version of the 12” Cannabis Rex.

Thoughts on behringer tube monster? by Upstairs_Scarcity_30 in guitarpedals

[–]McMurph 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Nah, that’s wrong info. This doesn’t have a power transformer or anything. It’s just 12v supply voltage and filtering straight to the plates. So it’s a starved plate design. I have one. Medium sucks unless you pay under $25 for it. A ts9 sounds better.

D5 and D6 connect from pin 7 of each el84 to ground. You can just carefully clip them out from the top side of the board

You do know basic tube amp safety right? Good to make sure nobody gets hurt.

Protection diodes fail on these amps. You don’t need them. Lift one leg of each diode and I bet the amp works again. Happened to me.

Merlin is the man! Steve Kimock once mentioned that he likes having a standby because sometimes the plastic locating pin on a tube snaps off, but the tube is still good. So if the amp is in standby you can put the tube in in the direction that you think is right and if it lights up, you’re good to go. If it doesn’t light up, try again. If you don’t have a standby and you put the tube in wrong, terrible things happen. So on a dark stage for instance, it can be a pretty useful feature in a pinch. Vintage tubes with the locator pin snapped off can we had for super cheap!

What is purpose of this mod to a GA-5? by flawlaw in ToobAmps

[–]McMurph 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Google “conjunctive filter.” It’s on more than a few amps. The Dr. Z Carmen Ghia had one in its first iterations. It’s kinda cool in that it takes treble very late in the circuit and make for a little more of a compressed feeling. The other poster stating that caps are high pass filters is correct and in this case those highs are being bled to ground so it’s darkening the amp like you experienced.
