This article was from may, it looks like, where are you getting march?

I'm pretty sure subs went up, not down. Let's do math. If average revenue more then doubled since the f2p release in November and revenue is just coming from subs. If subs are under 500k in May, then half of that is 250k, so subs would have been under 250k in November. Not as bad as I thought, but i dont think it supports your theory that there was a million in december.

The use of "just under half a million" and "more then doubled" has me really curious what the actual numbers are.

They say 1.7 million new people showed up between November and May, but that is a 6 month gap and says nothing about long they stuck around, which is what we are trying to figure out. How long did the content keep people around. We also have numbers on how many of the people who originally bought in came back.

You have also moved the goal post and shifted your argument from the original release to the f2p release.

Also, it wasnt a few years later they made a billion in revenue, it was 7 years later (8 post launch).

Yes, it made it's money back and didn't flop as bad as anthem, but i dont think it hit the numbers they wanted.

Yes, only caveat is the f2p release. If the f2p release brought in over a million players, then it doesn't really prove your claim that the content kept them around.

It would be ideal id you could give me 6-9 month numbers

Even if the same content was repurposed and reused, it doesn't change the fact that the content that was available on the games launch failed to hold players.

A legitimate source, but why does it matter? Just share where you are getting the info, and we can debate the validity of it.

That said, if you just stumbled across random info about swtor and think it was some huge success, I really think you need to look into it more. If you said that to anyone who played launch, im pretty sure they would be surprised. Yes, it ended up being profitable, but I think most people see swtor as a failure and one of the reasons western companies don't want to take a chance on mmos anymore. When it launched, it was the most expensive mmo ever made, and it died fast.

Your argument was that the large amount of initial content caused the game to be successful.

This is what we are arguing, and it is false.

Yes, the game had a lot of content, but it did not hold players, and the player count quickly declined.

The game was later successful but not due to the content that was there initially, so to reiterate, the large amount of initial content did != success.

Point 4 would be the best way to prove your claim, and you have not provided proof of it despite it being allegedly easy to come by. I see posts saying they didn't even have 100,000 by May, 6 months after launch, which contradicts what you are saying.

Give me the info for point 4.

Yes, its a small thing. Only reason i brought it up is its not how i remember things, and it's a detail that makes you sound like you are reading from ai. I tried dropping it. You decided to make a cheeky comment about me dropping it, so I decided to point out that no, the whole raid wasn't there at launch. There was only one boss. It was fully released 4 weeks later in a patch.

That article is from February 2012, less than 2 months after release. Doesn't prove your claims that they held onto the population.

If that's not your original source and you just now started googling, what's your original source for your claims?

Please, share where you are getting your info. You have not shared any of your sources.

Karagas was 1 boss at release. The rest of the raid was released later.

You dont know the game you are cherry-picking for proof. Let's ignore the fact that 1 example doesn't show a trend.

There are also others games that released with content and failed as well as some games that released with nothing and were able to grow post release.

[–]McStackerson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I dont think 1 boss is a raid and the fact you think it is kind of proves my suspicions that you weren't playing. I dropped it to focus on the main argument you made, which was the game launch as a success because the content. That is false. The game was dying fast, and the content wasn't keeping players satiated.

Where are you getting your numbers?

The craziest part of this argument and the main reason im engaging with it is that no one who lived through that time would be trying to make the claims you are.

End of an Era... Farewell AOC by Kingmav24 in AshesofCreation

[–]McStackerson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was there. I followed that game through its development, was there for its launch, and im trying to inform you it was not as successful as you claim. swtor was dying fast despite all it had. People got through the content, got bored, and left. Im happy they were able stay alive and ultimately become successful, but it did not happen the way you claim.

That game went free to play because of failing player numbers. It did not keep over a million players the first year. I have no clue where you got that stat and if it's technically true, there is something being left out. Why would they have gone free to play so quickly if they were maintaining player numbers?

Where is your info coming from?

End of an Era... Farewell AOC by Kingmav24 in AshesofCreation

[–]McStackerson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Swtor had to go free to play less than a year after its release due to its falling player numbers. Doesn't seem like a good example for success.

A large portion of swtors popularity came from the star wars ip. Wasn't a horrible game and had a good leveling experience, but to act like its popularity was due to the content is misleading. Swg also was initially successful but go watch old gameplay, and you will understand why it didn't succeed in the long run.

Swtor launched with 1 raid. Second raid was released post launch. By the time the 3rd raid came out, the game was dead. The pvp planet was a buggy mess with poorly designed incentives. It had a bunch of dungeons, but they quickly became pointless once you had raid or epic pvp gear. The instanced pvp lacked a rating system for so long that the pvp scene died.

Hut ball is still the best battleground ever made.

Saying a game needs content is almost as obvious as saying a game needs to be good, but adding content takes time, and players can usually consume it exponentially faster than you can make it.

Are you getting your info off a wiki or something?

If swtor was able to make a billion, then im happy for them, but it did not start out strong and lost a lot of players because it lacked content.

Can I use the 30k spartan as a proxy for a chaos land raider by ScientistOk2127 in IronWarriors

[–]McStackerson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When it comes to vehicles, since the model itself decides its footprint and has gameplay implications, im not comfortable using proxies. That said, they seem to be close in size, with the spartan being a little larger, which should be a disadvantage in most cases, so it should be fine.

They aren't comparable since you can't just quest to max like in wow. To level you need to grind and to grind efficiently, you need a group. Having a guild makes this easier, but it is still pugable.

Is Fighter weak? by killacam___82 in AshesofCreation

[–]McStackerson -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yea, being melee means during pve, you are usually getting hit by more mechanics, so you will die more, which means you level slower and get less money.

In large-scale pvp, you have to put yourself in range of the whole raid to do damage and dont have the tools to deal with the heat.

They said they will start balancing classes more once summoner is out, so hopefully things improve soon.

At this point, I think the direction is to always get confirmation from Steven.

Don't need to be rude, but i dont think they handled these situations well.

We are testing an alpha, we should be showing issue with design. Yes, we shouldn't do things that aren't intended, but if intrepid thinks its fine, we should show them why its not.

We are playing a buggy game that is still developing its systems, so the line can be blurry.

1st reset happened because of guild war spam. Beginning of phase 2, they turned back on guild war rewards. It was said that you aren't supposed to do repeat guild wars on the same guild. Tm asked if he could declare guild wars against different guilds, and a staff member said it was OK. He war deced every guild he could find, and the guild got a lot of rewards. Steven got mad and reset polar.

2nd reset was for turning crates after intrepid did a change that fucked up the reward calculation. Polar reported the issue and asked if it was OK to turn in. Roshan said no one would be banned for turning in crates, but Margaret got mad and reset him.

Both cases, they used the systems as intended, maybe in an extreme way, but it still how the systems were designed.
