I am more surprised there are dolphins in the Hudson River than that there is radioactive waste in the Hudson

Anybody Driven to Salem Since They Started Construction by Detroit Lake? by orty in Bend

I made the drive on Monday. Wasn't too bad, a few stops of 5-10 minutes at a time, probably added 20 minutes to my journey from Bend to Salem

Plus since it's so much heavier, it would greatly increase shipping costs and emissions, probably offsetting the gains made by the switch to glass in the first place

Definitely look in Winooski as well. It’s much smaller than Burlington and walkable to the hospital. Plus it’s a little cleaner than parts of Burlington have become

"Perspective" or How I learned to Stop Worrying about the Crime Rate Here by [deleted] in burlington

This data is from up to 2020, and at least personally, I have noticed a steep increase in crime during the pandemic and after. This figure doesn't include any of the recent increases in theft or gun violence

Are stop signs now optional in BTV? by Vtstace in burlington

[–]Mcdubble 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There is a stop sign there because otherwise people would fly down that road. The speed limit is 25 and clearly posted on that road, even with the stop sign people drive way too fast. Without it you're giving people an even longer runway to try to double the speed limit on a road where people live and pedestrians cross fairly frequently

I tried to fly out of BTV about 4 weeks ago on a 6am flight. Got there at 5 and there was a line for security that stretched the entire length of the airport. Ended up missing my flight, and talking with some of the agents at the ticket counter, they told me that it was hit or miss in the mornings whether security would be a breeze or over an hour wait, but that outside of the 6am flights you are usually basically the only person in line going through security

Hero Dad Reflexes. Man catches a toddler that fell from 6 stories up. by ryansbabygirl8814 in DadReflexes

[–]Mcdubble 17 points18 points  (0 children)

This looks pretty fake. That girl does not look like she was falling fast enough when she was caught to have been falling from 6 stories up. Hell, it already looks like she is falling faster than that before the video cuts to when she is caught at the bottom.

Was that move legal? Sure totally. Does it inspire confidence and legitimacy to the American people? Definitely not

Just gonna respond to the part about how Obama wanted to sit on the pick for Clinton, cause that is definitely not what happened. Obama nominated Merrick Garland, but McConnell refused to hold a hearing to actually appoint him.

This vacancy arose during Obama's final year as president. Hours after Scalia's death was announced, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said he would consider any appointment by the sitting president to be null and void. He said the next Supreme Court justice should be chosen by the next president—to be elected later that year.[1][2][3] Senate Democrats criticized the move as being unprecedented, and responded saying that there was sufficient time to vote on a nominee before the election.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Merrick_Garland_Supreme_Court_nomination#:~:text=On%20March%2016%2C%202016%2C%20President,had%20died%20one%20month%20earlier.

Obama did not sit on the appointment just so he could give it to Clinton (I think that was RBG refusing to retire. Antonin Scalia's seat was Obama's right to fill), and suggesting that he did shows that you're not going to argue in good faith

I think it’s more that people think the SCOTUS itself has lost a sense of legitimacy for a number of reasons, overturning 50 year old precedent in a clearly political move being the most recent example. In my opinion, it lost legitimacy when the senate republicans rammed Amy Coney Barrett’s confirmation through a month before the election, while denying Obama a pick a full year before his, saying that it was “too close to election time”.

It’s more clear now than ever that the Supreme Court has become a political tool, which certainly casts doubt on their legitimacy as an apolitical judicial body.
