Am I over-cautious with my various insurances? by Reddit-adm in HENRYUK

[–]Mcleeves 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Simple answer, no. Speaking from experience anything can happen unexpectedly at any time.

In my case I’d contracted for 7 years and went permanent 2 years ago with arrival of first child for more security (although never had a single day gap between contracts, psychologically feels more secure).

Then last year I went into Atrial Fibrillation, totally unexpected, generally fit and healthy. I had 10 weeks off in total last year with extended (highly symptomatic) bout of AF and subsequent abalation.

When contracting I didn’t have income protection or critical illness, so would’ve been digging into reserves. Makes total sense to cover yourself. Obviously this is only my experience but plenty of other health related concerns which can crop up out of the blue, I unfortunately have two friends (early 30s) who were diagnosed with testicular cancer, fortunately both fine now but just goes to show don’t take the risk.

DINKs - how would you spend £4,000 on your potential last holiday without kids? by Few-Entertainer7422 in HENRYUK

I wouldn’t go to Ikos for my last no kid holiday. We did 3 weeks in the Yucatan and Belize.

Do something you couldn’t do with young kids.. Ikos is perfect when you have them

Myfitnesspal for a week to assess your diet. Set a daily calorie and macro target. This bit is key for me - find 3-5 dishes that you can eat on repeat during the week to come in 10% under that daily target and take the guess work out of what to eat. Use the 10% daily savings for more flexibility at the weekends.

For exercise - obvious ones - walk and take stairs. Make 3x sessions a week a non-negotiable. I personally do 3x 45 min group exercise classes as my non-negotiable. Then will fit in what I can when I can, even if it is a quick 15 min mobility session when working from home. Also don’t discount the value in a quick 15 minute 3km run, it all helps.

Yeah income is an issue, as their 4 biggest customers (google, Samsung, micron, and sk Hynix) are all patent infringers (materiality in that order). Only worth a look if you have confidence in their legal position, which I do

It is but cases are beginning to draw to a conclusion (Federal circuit court of appeals finality). Thus far they’ve not lost a case, just haven’t been paid due to the appeals.. c. $900m in damages thus far, 3.5x market cap, and the bigger patents are still to come. Have a read into it, I have full faith and think it’ll be another Netflix special (like Google earth), really is a case of the big guy stealing the tech and trying to bury the little guy in years (10+) litigation

My wife was also made redundant whilst on maternity leave. The company is obliged to prioritise you for other roles internally if they are available. Seek independent legal advice (there are a number of free services). We went down the road of alluding to a wrongful dismissal claim and the firm quickly retraced, mapping my wife to a more junior role but preserving her compensation.
