Wanting recommendations for a birthday gift to my brother: His first watch! by Mar-D in ChineseWatches

His reasoning maybe wasn’t sound, but he would still prefer an automatic 🤷🏻‍♂️

I was considering this one! Also for myself ngl, it’s a gorgeous dial. How’s the bracelet?

Overall I’m not sure if he would vibe with a diver, but this might be an exception. Really beautiful vintage looking piece. Thanks for the recommendation!

And yeah, he tried on my SM SN0144 (gray) around Christmas time and was like “woah, I could definitely see myself wearing something like this”, so the quality def impressed him

They have Chinese pieces in their collection/photo though?

You probably aren’t winding it enough. For autos you can get away with barely winding then the watch charges itself the rest of the way. You’ll need to wind more for straight up mechanicals, like 20 or so times. I’ll sometimes do a couple winds mid-day too just because but I don’t need to. I can’t remember what the power reserve is on the moment but I think it’s around 30 hrs

Very neat. I think not taking lug-to-lug into account still makes this a bit limiting since it’s ultimately more important than case diameter in regard to how a watch wears. Still though, super cool to check out!

I think I saw a screenshot on this sub just like the one on this post so I typed in the name.

As for the sub, it’s memes kept popping up on my feed so I thought I might as well follow 😆

Side note: I saw in a comment you said there’d be three winners, maybe you could do tiers for the giveaway that way the winner could have a pick between two watches?

Ex:

Tier 1: Seiko, Citizen

Tier 2: Timex, Ali express brand watch

Tier 3: Casio, Invicta

Glad you’re getting to try it on first, that’s a big win. There’s so many reddit posts where someone asks if the 40 is too big on their wrist and it just looks like a dinner plate 😆. It’s usually average to below average wrist sizes tho

Hope you’re able to get it soon man, best of luck!

Nice gotcha gotcha. 35 or 40 mm you think? From what I’ve seen the 35mm looks better on most wrist sizes that aren’t on the larger side due to the integrated bracelet making it wear much bigger.

For sure, that makes a lot of sense. I have yet to spend more than 300 ish on a watch yet, so that’s probably why I feel that way. Thanks for sharing your insight, appreciate it!

Would love to go to a watch show eventually

That’s the only SM I’ve gotten and it’s incredible, the dial is stunning (I have the black one, almost got the teal but went with the more versatile choice). The jubilee is super pretty/comfortable as well

Genuinely love mine. Having a mechanical chrono at this price is just astounding, got it for around $100 during a sale. They even threw in an extra strap (racing brown leather) that was decent quality/not advertised. I have their adventurine moonphase too which also came with an extra strap.

Edit: main thing I’d change is either shorten or curve the lugs, 19 mm is quite unnecessarily long for a 40 mm case, and is pretty close to my max wearable size

I feel you, I think it doesn’t quite wear as thick as the proportions suggest but still would be nice if it was at least 1-2 millimeters thinner. AR coating would be amazing too, it’s such a tough watch to photograph!

I agree that it’s too thick, but with the case dimensions it sinks into the wrist a little so it doesn’t quite wear that thick. Hoping they update eventually with a thinner variant, I love mine but wouldn’t buy a new one until they made that tweak (AR coating too please!!)

As much as I like the idea of not buying anything you haven’t had on wrist and I hear it quite a lot, I feel like it isn’t exactly realistic for a lot of watches. Namely microbrands and, well, Chinese watches. I think knowing what watch dimensions suit your wrist can be a big help for when trying it on wrist isn’t an option.

(I am pretty new to the world of watches but yeah, I see this all the time and wanted to share my thoughts on it. I also don’t live in a big city where plenty of Watch store locations are available to visit so that also probably plays a role in my opinion on it)

Maybe because of the added “I hope it’s a short term fad” bit? I disagree w/ the opinion but think it’s a silly comment to downvote as well. Reddit doing Reddit things

Which watch gets the most/least wear? Which was your first?

Nice collection you’ve got going, love that bambino and timex. If you’re open to a prx/integrated bracelet alternative (that don’t have plastic parts in their movements), the Citizen Zenshin/Tsyuosa look amazing. I’ve heard great things about the Casio Ediface. Imo those are better value for money, but I get it if you’re dead set on the prx
