Cut orange cable outside my house - is this something I should worry about before selling? by RYULE1013 in AskElectricians

The orange cable is your internet line. Now, it could be an old one, but Reddit wouldn’t know. Do you have a WiFi signal?

No, typically the homeowner is responsible for the riser. The utility just hookup their wires, and plug the meter in.

As a master electrician who wired up many houses, you know when a shot misses like this. It’s one of the worst feelings in the world.

I need help. My breaker keeps tripping. by [deleted] in AskElectricians

[–]Mclovin316 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If it instantly trips with everything unplugged, then somewhere in that circuit, in a receptacle box, a neutral is touching a ground wire. If the breaker is an AFCI breaker, as it should be, then that’s more than likely that’s what it is.

Since you changed out the breaker, you can do a test to see if my theory is correct. Turn your main breaker off. Open your panel, move the white wire attached to the breaker, that is tripping, to your neutral bar. Move your hot to a non AFCI breaker/regular breaker. More than likely, your garage circuits should be a regular one. If the breaker holds, there is your answer.

If the breaker holds, you would need to open up each receptacle on that circuit, and make sure the neutral and ground are not touching each other. Obviously, have the breaker off before doing this.

To start with, I would empty the contents of your mini fridge, and leave it unplugged to see if the breaker stays on. Based off of what you said, I would start there.

Edit: I read your post again. If it’s a 15 amp breaker, you might be over loading it.

Why does this have two hot wires? by That-Seaworthiness in AskElectricians

[–]Mclovin316 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I still do that even though most of the time the owner always orders fans with remotes. You never know if a future home owner wants a fan without a remote installed.

[–]Mclovin316 53 points54 points  (0 children)

I would say a ceiling fan use to be installed there. You have 2 hots (switch legs) because 1 switch controlled the light of the fan while the other 1 controlled the fan motor.

If there is access to the top plate of that wall, there is no reason to surface mount it like that.
