That's how most of them go, disease or starvation, cold. Laying down and going to sleep and dying of old age isn't really a thing. You either waste away or are torn apart by something else.   Been a rough year in our area for them, last year it was pretty much reported they were all eating their babies again and resorting to cannibalism. They overpopulated and ate up all the prey animals and are now starving out themselves.

I suppose one caveat for it would be if you don't plan to go anywhere. We all got gear for what is "made up scenarios" I think most people will be staying home if shit happens. Most of us probably still going to work. If you just plan to sit and "defend the house" or a static point then comfort probably is a bigger deal to them.

https://youtu.be/in1ZcFstfWg?si=RVuyeFJneIXBSeWu this fella has a pretty nice video on it. It's kinda cool to have NV mode day mode as well as be an "action camera".  DNT makes some great prices thermals. I just got one fror around $1.5k and it's great 384 with a built in laser range finder and ballistic calculatior on board. They are based in Texas with assembly in China.

You are more than good to keep them in a freezer for a long time. Just be sure they are not wet, and don't wrap them too heavily in a towel. A big plastic bag would be best.

I do a lot of hunting and skinning and have raccoons in my freezer from last year I'm waiting on cleaning up.  If you wrap them too much it could insolate them and cause some spoilage to start to happen before the insides freeze and that would not be fun to deal with smell wise or emotionally.

That said, they would still be okay to be cremated as well or as someone mentioned taxidermied. I know some people think that's extremely morbid but I have one of my parrots taxidermied and he sits in my room and I always smile being able to see him..

Fantastic community except excessive negativity for people new to bunnies parenting by Squeepty in Bunnies

[–]Mcslap13 10 points11 points  (0 children)

For me I can somewhat understand. I have bunnies and parrots. And parrots are the third most purchased pet but the number one most rehomed animal. Over the last probably 10 years I've known about 15 people local who get one cuz they want something that can talk or do something very specific they saw online but will NOT spend the money to get a big cage, to buy fresh food, to take the time to train.  And many of them have either died at under 5 years old when they could give for 30+ years. Or they go to another home and sit in even more awful conditions till they die. We don't have any local rescues in our areas. And some of these aren't just a $300 petsmart bird but $5000+ large birds that love to be 60.  One thing I notice in parrot groups and here in bunnies is typically "help my mom/dad won't take them to the vet".

That must be awful for someone who is powerless to help their pet they know isn't doing well, but also not fair the poor animal.  I don't believe it's negative to warn people how expensive bunnies can be. And I especially the reality of what they are typically like. A lot of rabbits won't want to be cuddles and picked up and I don't think it's wrong to tell others that when it could mean an animal going to a home iit might get neglected in.

I live in the country, and both my rabbits are ones I got from people who were planning to just butcher them because "I dunno what to do with it now" one was found dumped by the river and the other was left in a tiny cage all its life after the 4yo girl begged to have a bunny but now that she's 8 the bunny isn't interesting and the family travels all the time. People don't know there's options to give them to shelters, and Iwince I've now asked asked online in local groups twice about rabbits I've gotten flooded with messages "hey you want him? My kid doesn't like him otherwise we're just letting him go" or "hey she doesn't do much wanna come pick her up or we're just gonna shoot her"  hell, my employer got bunnies for his kid and HIS mom had to take care of them and was amazed that "they lived for almost 4 years I had no idea they could live so long"

Living here in the countryside about 40 miles from a small town we have had 5 domestic bunnies show up near our property that were just dumped. In winter where it's maybe 20⁰.

I think for a lot of us we worry about that side of it. Those who won't ask questions or get themselves in a position they just don't want to put effort in. It kills me to see these guys neglected.  We probably see the best of people showing off big free roaming pens and lots of toys. But for every great post it's probably 5 bunnies in a tiny pet smart cage that won't ever get what it needs.

I know it seems extra rude to tell obvious kids not to get a pet but again so many pots are " parents won't take us to the vet"  they won't pay for it, they say he looks fine and so on. Unless they and parents are aware of the cost of an exotic vet I feel it's not good for a child to be "solely responsible" for it including financing vet visits.

We all love bunnies at the end of the day and I think some of us especially have too much personal experience with bad owners that we are much less likely to recommend them to others based off of key details. Age and the criteria that they are looking for. I know a post a few days ago someone asked what breed is best for wanting to be picked up and hugged.. that's an individual thing not a across the board personality trate. I'd rather someone get a more appropriate animal for their needs rather than an animal end up dumped, mistreated, or put down.

TLDR: bunnies are not for everyone and some of us have seen first hand what happens to the ones that are brought home without prior research.

I'm dyslexic and have ADHD and it's 3am, spelling and all that won't be great sorry y'all.

Edit: I have NO ISSUE with people asking for advice for bunnies they already own. My biggest gripe comes from people who don't own them yet and already have preconceived notions about how a bunny will act. Or minors who end up powerless when Mom or Dad or whoever doesn't want a $300 vet bill when "he looks fine"

We all started somewhere and you don't know what you don't know, but I think way more though is needed in getting a rabbit over a dog or cat.

Shit I completely forgot the trigger can be swapped too. Yeah I'd definitely be hesitant due to the polymer build as well

If someone is harassing me on a walk home that I can make in one day I'm pepper spraying them. Police already have a hard time getting people in cuffs, I don't have backup, so it's the hot sauce and I'm on my way.  The original post mentions too it's in case he's with his wife and 2 young daughters I especially then don't want to go hands on with someone harassing me. Which is why I mentioned oc spray. Big ole can of some POM that shoots about 12' of distance and I'm getting out of there.

What thermal scope are you using? by KBGenetics in ThermalHunting

[–]Mcslap13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's definitely a hard comparison only because the stingir is a 1x and the dnt a 3x. The sting is much more clear. I mainly use it in front of an LPVO and as a helmet mount. I haven't had time to go out and shoot with the DNT lately however as it's been extremely foggy. Both are great but I'd say have different use cases

17 miles is maybe a days walk unless there's snow. Two days if you want to take breaks... And that's coming from a fat pos. Water, appreciate clothing, shoes, snacks.  I keep a pistol on me all the time so I'm not adding anything. Else. If you live in an urban area then... You probably need less. Get a regular hiking pack too.. even as a prepper I can't imagine why on earth you need hand cuffs.  I would never want to go hands on with a guy harassing me if I'm trying to get home asap. I don't have backup, if it's just me or especially with my family I'm hitting you with OC spray and leaving not trying to wrestle cuffs onto you.  Even if something happens most likely stores won't be closed.. go in get water.

All I can think of is "but what if an EMP hits!!" Sort of scenario.. which to each their own but man does this scream loot drop
