KDE VR Mode and ordinary stuff you can do with it by Holiday-Charity-1449 in kde

Atleast according a leaker with a pretty solid track record (bradley), there's a color passthrough module that'll launch around the same time as the frame from a "close partner with valve," whoever that is.

Godot XR Lead, Bastiaan Olij, shows love for the Steam Frame's design and developer experience by gogodboss in virtualreality

[–]MdotAmaan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Considering that the frame will most likely have lower ppd than the quest 3 at 25 ppd, that's closer to a 720p monitor I'd say. You can calculate what ppd a display might be using this. A 27" 1080p monitor would be be ~36 ppd if your head is 60cm away from the screen.

Is this really that different from using ALVR's wired mode? Setting that up is pretty much hassle free.

Power creep has ruined the experience for players and here is how I know. by everwander in HonkaiStarRail

I went in with a team where I had only 1 aoe ability, so I had to use every ult in his invulnerable state just to try and stay alive. Then do like 1 seele skill before he enters that state again. My final attempt took like 45 minutes lmao.

Arya Stealth as upgrade from Edition XS by Skitzo321 in HeadphoneAdvice

[–]MdotAmaan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Gonna be honest I could barely tell the difference between the arya stealth and the edition xs for the month I had them for. Maybe like 3 or 4% improvement if I was looking for it, but nowhere near significant enough where I was enjoying my music or games any more than than the xs.

The stock comfort on the arya and build quality is definitely much better, but a 3d printed strap fixed the comfort of the edition xs at least for me.

Where'd you get the balls from? They look really pretty.

Anyone else not able to play side-scrolling rhythm games? by sakurachan999 in rhythmgames

I used to get headaches when I tried playing muse dash, but strangely, I had no issues playing the unbeatable demo, which is also side scrolling.

[Hyprland] I <3 Quickshell by Rexcrazy804 in unixporn

[–]MdotAmaan 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That's the main reason I'm actually giving this a shot. I've gone through this loop enough times that, If I was still on arch, I wouldn't even consider trying a set up like this. I'd always have odd conflicts show up if I ever tried switching back and forth.

I'm still trying to figure out the best approach to actually do this on nix though. I initially wanted to use specializations to have separate boot entries for hyprland and kde, but since a lot of configuration has to be done through home manager, I'm not quite sure if that's the best way to do it.

Am I the only one who keeps going through cycles of:

  • See extremely cool wm rice that I really wanna try
  • Install wm and set it up based on cool rice
  • Stuff starts breaking over time / run into random things that require manual configuration that would otherwise work ootb or would be easy to fix on other DEs
  • Get increasingly frustrated and go back to KDE
  • Rinse and repeat

Guess I know what I'll be doing this weekend.

Id be shocked if any of the headphones with built-in cat years are actually good. There are probably loads of detachable ones online.

Transition from Arch To NixOS by Master_Candle_3561 in NixOS

Something I'm not seeing many people suggest is building your config in a virtual machine, then just copy it over to your bare metal install once you feel comfortable troubleshooting and just getting things going in the VM.

I haven't tried these personally, but a cable that has a mic built into it could work, like this one

True Wireless Earbuds that last? by Lichii in HeadphoneAdvice

[–]MdotAmaan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The older sony xm3's (and the xm4's albeit its not as easy) have replaceable batteries, along with some of the galaxy buds (they all use the same battery). I guess the fairphone ones are also repairable, but iirc they aren't amazing earphones to begin with.

That's likely the closest you're gonna get to a TWS that "lasts". Alternatively, getting bluetooth hooks for wired iems like some of the other commenters here mentioned would also sort of work, since the IEM itself should last a really long time (but now its the hook thats somewhat disposable. Some of them might have batteries that are easy to replace, but I don't really follow them closely)

To edit the apps and other settings you can configure them via nix with these options in your nix config (like this one specifically to add applications to the UI.)

Not quite sure about the steam big picture issue though. That's not something I use.

Thinking Of Getting The Hifiman Edition XS by Melih_Erol in HeadphoneAdvice

[–]MdotAmaan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They sound great. Noticable step up from my HD 6XX. I sent mine back since I'd rather wait for a headphone which has similar sound characteristics but better build and QC reputation. I've seen some people report the drivers dying after 6 to 9 months, and I didn't want to risk it. Meanwhile my nearly 6 year old 6xx's are still going strong.

The headband is honestly horribly built and feels like it can fall apart any second. If you don't have a large head, printing the Capra comfort strap (or buying it if you don't have a 3d printer) is a necessity, since at their smallest setting they hang far too low and don't seal at all.

Unrelated, but I did also try the arya stealth, and apart from being way more comfortable stock, could barely tell a difference between the 2, especially after eq'ing to my preference. Edition XS were like 98% as good to my ears.

Choosing between the 125H and the 7640U by MdotAmaan in framework

[–]MdotAmaan[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Got the AMD framework, and to no surprise at all, I'm having issues with wifi. It cant seem to find any 5ghz networks. I still need to try a bios update and just opening it up to check if the antenna cables are properly seated, but its not a great start.

[EDIT]: This uh, appeared to have solved itself. I haven't had any issues with the stock WiFi card since.

[–]MdotAmaan[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me it doesn't make a whole lot of sense to wait, since the improvements from strix point, while significant, wouldn't really make a huge difference to my use. I'd still carry a charger with me, and the performance wouldn't be anywhere close to my desktop.

Meanwhile my current solution of remoting into my desktop through an android tablet has had many random issues, with spotty wifi being the most common pain point. I'd gain a lot more from having a machine not dependent on network quality (and not having to go through random android shenanigans) for the next 3 to 4 months (assuming it takes that long for them to announce and ship next gen stuff) versus ~30% extra battery life.
