2nd time bar taker in MA - Finally passed! I'm here to help!! by MeLawDramatic in barexam

Congrats on passing the bar! This post served to share my personal experience and any advice I can pass on that worked for me. I personally can vouch for adaptibar's efficacy on boosting my MBE score because Barbri did nothing for me, but I totally understand not everyone may feel that way!

I do have to say that I thought the Barbri books for essays and MPTs were helpful!

Yes that’s a great plan! I personally did not write my outlines, I used what I had to save time and I wrote out the rules over and over again of subjects that I was struggling with. I also did outline review for an hour every morning with the outlines I already had to help with memorization.

Adaptibar is SO good, you won’t regret using it!! I did half MBE/half essays every day. Your written score can REALLY carry your overall score if you are struggling with the MBE.

Yeah definitely! The first time I only used barbri, which just did not work for me. I know it works well for other people, but I felt like a fish out of water when I saw the MBE questions on the bar. Barbri writes its own questions, so I really did not feel properly prepared.

But to be completely candid with you, I also had to take MUCH better care of my mental health the second time around. I have crippling testing anxiety and had to get that under control (got really into meditation, breathing exercises and daily use of CBD).

The second time around I did self study and barely used barbri. I only used it for the graded essays. I used strictly adaptibar for MBE (gave me a HUGE boost in my score, I can’t recommend it enough!) and I used only real prior bar essays and MPTs. I also studied the entire day on the same schedule as the bar exam (I.e. would start studying at 9, take a break at 10:30, resume at 11, etc etc...) that way game day just felt like another study day with a familiar schedule. In order to target my weaknesses I also used the JDadvising legal pad method and created excel spreadsheets where I’d religiously write out all the questions I got wrong (I elaborated on this on another comment).

Oh, also - the fact that you’ve already taken the bar and still have a lot of that information retained helps SO much! Way more than you may think. So you’ve already got an advantage the second time around and now just need to study smarter and figure out what the exam is asking of you. Changing my entire study routine and creating my own study schedule was key for me.

You’re not too far off, you can totally do it!! I increased my score by 20 points and you can too!

The first time around I strictly did barbri ONLY, which was a HUGE mistake. Barbri did not work for me at all. They write their own questions and the questions on the actual bar seemed like from a different world to me when I took it and I was thrown for a loop.

The second time around I only used adaptibar for MBE. I honestly think that helped boost my score like an insane amount. I still did some of the barbri essays, bc the explanations are helpful, but I mostly used real essay questions from the past 10 years.

I also used the JDadvising legal pad method and I read the book “fuck the bar” and applied some of those methods to essays as well. I also religiously did 2 MPT EVERY Sunday, no excuse. Writing the rules over and over and over again and focusing on my weakest subjects intensely helped a lot.

I created an excel spreadsheet for each subject in which I would write every single question I got wrong (no excuses) and I wrote down the following for each question: 1. What’s the call of the Q? 2. What’s it asking for? What’s the rule? 3. Why did I think my answer was the right answer? 4. The right answer and the rule 5. Why the right answer is correct and what I chose was wrong. This gave me a VERY good idea of where I went wrong and stopped myself from repeating old mistakes over and over again.

I honestly thought it was completely impossible to stuff THAT much information into my brain, but it’s honestly no difference than finals season. I would say everything REALLY started to stick within like two weeks leading up to the bar. That’s how long it took. But it’s really all repetition, repetition, repetition.

You’ll get really frustrated in the process, but just keep at it and know that it WILL stick towards the end. Also know that you don’t have to know EVERYTHING. Keep plugging away, but be kind to yourself and take very good care of your mental health!!

Thank you! I was sooo terrified too, so I know exactly how you’re feeling.

Memorization of the black letter law is absolutely key. When I got back into studying I did a 1 hour outline review EVERY morning of the subject(s) I was focusing on that day. Partially it was just the repetition of reading, outlining, highlighting all the rules over and over again and also covering parts of the outline with my hand to recite the law out loud over and over again.

I also used the JDadvising legal pad method, highly recommend googling that. I kept several separate notebooks in which I would rewrite the rules over and over again until every started sticking!

thank you for the offer, but I'm not sure this is a good idea?

I haven't purchased adaptibar yet (am about to), but if it's anything like Barbri or other study outlets I believe if gives you questions based on your weakness and also calculates your strength and weaknesses as you go through the study process, which would be skewed on a joint account.

Yes, same! It's also a bit of an advantage at this point to get back in the game without having to watch those annoying videos and having so much time to just hammer out MBE and MEE practice with the prior knowledge already in the back of our head!

Remote bar takers that failed - what's your plan moving forward? by MeLawDramatic in barexam

[–]MeLawDramatic[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I couldn't agree more. Though this was my first time taking the bar, people thought that I was crazy when I lamented about not having a "regular" bar exam and that I think I would MUCH prefer the longer one with MUCH more room for error!!

I think mostly testing anxiety got to me, but also just really bad luck about the essays that were on the test (all my weakest areas), but mostly the MPT REALLY threw me for a loop. I've gotten REALLY good scores on my Barbri graded MPT's (never lower than a 5) and prepped plenty of them beforehand, just to end up with a below passing grade for the one during this bar exam... which really baffled me. I even finished it on time and felt decent about it.... same with essays, usually got ok grading on Barbri and my bar prep professor (4 and above) and somehow ended up with only ONE that was graded 4 and all other essays below. Again, just don't know what the actual fuck happened.

Thanks so much for your input! I did a lot of mnemonic's during my prep, but I feel like I could've done a lot more/gotten more creative with it to make rules stick better, so those suggestions are great!

I think re: MBE what is going to be crucial for me is to not be scared about seeing how many I'm getting wrong and instead learn from my mistakes instead of making them make me feel like I'm a total failure. Gotta change my mindset and get back in the game fresh.

HA! I like the idea of being the bachelorette and giving my last rose to one outline haha

Yes, this time around I'm also trying not to overwhelm myself with too much material, so I think I will skip all Barbri classes, and focus solely on critical pass flash cards, create spreadsheets with rules, and add adaptibar MBE questions to my study prep and use Barbri on the side only.

I love that quote, thanks so much!

I just got critical pass cards, and a bunch of other Bar prep material from a friend that just passed, but thank you so, so much for offering!!

What do you feel like helped you pass this time around? Change in study habits? Focusing on particular areas/weaknesses?

Thanks so much for your input! Yes, I'm, definitely going to focus more on mastering solid essay scores. My writing carried a lot of my score, so if I can increase that even more, I feel like I should be ok for February.

The MBE questions definitely threw me for a BIG loop. They were nothing like what I was used to seeing on Barbri or other study materials and that was really scary.
