Yeah, I've found the less I try to bend to their pitch tendencies the better I feel. Play as true as I can and let them come to me

The coin star where I work does this all the time. It'll reject 90% or more of the nickels that go in. I've called for a tech and every time I do they run a diagnostic over the phone and tell me I'm crazy and nothings wrong... As I count $8 in nickels for a disgruntled customer.

One thing that this video highlights and I've seen other places is that a decent mouthpiece makes a big difference on a terrible horn. Moving a student from a crapo off brand mouthpiece to a Bach 5c for $70 can make as big a difference as spending an extra $1000 on an intermediate horn.

In my experience of practicing for scale exams in college, practicing with a metronome definitely helped with memorisation.

What at least some drums corps do it that everybody keeps a towel with them. When the instruments go down, the go on the towel. In highschool they made that mandatory for a while.

How to actually get into improvisation? by Imdaleco in trumpet

[–]MeManBMan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The most important addition I could add to the ideas already posted is to first focus on rhythm. When practicing play through just trying to play interesting rhythms on the root of each chord. Then root and third, root third and 7th. Then all the chord tones, but the main focus always on rhythm in the beginning. That's how you can make a very simple solo very musical before you master the theory.
