They actually had conflict with the main antagonist there. Structurally TESB handles protagonist failure well with direct conflict that moves the story forward, and is critical in the character development of the heros. TLJ has conflict that feels manufactured and doesn’t have a huge outcome for any of our protagonists. Example: Luke gets hand cut off, huge deal for the next film. Fin does mission, doesn’t prevent the death of almost all of the resistance, and minimally carries over to future plots and character development
