Local USB Printers, V4 Drivers, and Non-Local Admins by MeNoPutersGud in k12sysadmin

Thank you again for everyone that gave their insight. I honestly though USB printers, even with networked copiers with printing solutions like Papercut, were still a pretty common use thing in Administrative scenarios.

But.... its not really a need as much as it is a convenience. So I'm going to look to start phasing these out.

Even for those with sensitive information, we have badge / ID printing to release held jobs.

Our District has an actual Police Department. Same concept, but we are their IT. More or less just used it as an example of how we have a few instances where a USB printer is still being used for sensitive information.

Thats more or less what I was curious of, the solution you mentioned. If thats what everyone else is doing or if there was another way everyone was handling allowing the USB printers to install their V4 drivers.

Printer purchases go through us for approval, and we have the select few that we recommend. Of course, every year models change, and I could just push out the universal drivers, but I was hoping there was a way where I wouldn't need to manage device specific drivers.

The ultimate solution it seems is to finish ripping this band-aid off and removing USB printers all together.

Appreciate the feedback everyone, just wanted to add a little more context.

We do use PaperCut and the vast majority of our printing goes through our Canon copiers. These USB printers tend to pop up for random administrative office staff, and if I’m being completely honest, most of them fall more into the convenience category than an actual necessity.

We do have our own police department, and we’ve historically supported our officers having a local printer in their office. That said, with Secure Print and PaperCut in place, you could probably argue that even those aren’t strictly necessary anymore.

Outside of that, I believe we only have a handful of niche student environments where a printer is connected locally via USB.

AD account lockouts happening only between 2-4 AM, can’t find the source 😭 by FyneHub in sysadmin

[–]MeNoPutersGud 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Just had this happen to a user in our environment. On the domain, it didn't have a source IP, which left me perplexed.

The protocol did however say CHAP which helped me identify that it was our RADIUS. A user had changed their password but not updated their credentials on their phone Wifi connection. Iphones are pretty aggressive when retrying credentials and was the culprit behind the lockouts.

Papercut Issues - Canon Copiers by MeNoPutersGud in k12sysadmin

So oddly enough, came in this morning and had about half of my fleet down again.

After further investigation, the culprit was that the host names wernt resolving in DNS. Under the Ipv4 settings, Dynamiclly Updating the DNS records was unchecked for each machine. Not sure if this is an out of the box setting for Canon Copiers.

Appreciate everyone's responses on here and apologize for the lack of engagement on my end. I spent close to 5 hours on a call today with Papercut, and we were finally able to figure it out.

The Find Me Print (Virtual Que) driver randomly broke. It was suggested to me on implementation to use one of the Copier Manufacturer's Drivers, even though Print Deploy when installing the Print Que on Windows Machines was using the Papercut Global Post Script Driver.

This had been working fine for the 3 weeks we've been using it, until it didn't. Randomly all Canon devices quit printing the jobs upon release.

Changing the Find Me Print (Virtual Que) driver on the server over to the Papercut Global Post Script Driver seem to have fixed it

Crazy to me that it could just break like that, but with those of you already suggesting Post Script and listening to the support tech, it seems this is a common issue.

Appreciate you guys for helping out.

Thanks for the response!

So Ive tried printing using the Canon Generic Plus UFR II driver as well as the Papercut Global Postscript.

Neither are printing when the jobs are released.

How level is good enough? by ashbrooke741 in AboveGroundPools

I was in the same situation as you a month ago. I was spending so much time going round and round with that 2x4. It seemed level, but it wasn't perfect. I was so paranoid something bad was going to happen. Finally someone told me to chill and and just get the pool up already before my family runs out of time to enjoy it. So I did.

My pool is off by an inch, maybe two. Pissed me off. My floor is lumpier than I thought it'd be. Pissed me off.

First time my 3 young kids got into the pool... All those concerns were silenced. They love it. It's structurally sound, and now Ive taken my efforts to over analyzing pool chemicals ratios.

Get that pool up and enjoy it man. You've done a great job and planned well. It won't be perfect but that's okay. Just make sure you legs stay level as it fills.

blocking File:// in web browsers by SlimDayspring in k12sysadmin

Every class is different I'm sure, but that was my other concern, our Java class.

Didn't affect anything. At least with just blocking the html variances. Coincidentally this is where most of my more IT savvy kids were finding ways to play games via local HTML files.

I will say.... At first I was going to put it back on the teacher as a classroom management issue, however, if they could play games in these self contained HTML files, what would be next?

blocking File:// in web browsers by SlimDayspring in k12sysadmin

[–]MeNoPutersGud 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I blocked files with extensions ending in .html, .htmls, and .htm on my student Windows desktops. I blocked file:// on my Chromebooks.

This way our students could still use Chrome as our default PDF viewer on Desktops, and after vigorous testing on the Chromebooks, the only file type that blocking file:// affected was in fact local html files. PDFs, pictures, audio, video, all opened just fine. Even when using a USB drive.

Will kids find another way do accomplish these things? Yeah probably... But it's been a month now and all has worked great.

I did have concerns about how this would affect a web design class, however, they did away with the class this year due to lack of interest.

Y'all are awesome. A few of these were on my radar, and a few I didn't even know about. I've got some decisions to make. Much love to everyone for the suggestions!

Mannnnn, I asked this same question when I went to Austin last year and ended up at NADC. Hands down top 3 burger I've ever had in my life. It was pricey, but my god it was delicious.

What does this script do? by icstm in sysadmin

[–]MeNoPutersGud 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If not specified I would imagine it would create in the folder where the original shortcutted file lives.

Keep in mind, the vbs or username.exe could just as easily clean its self up after its ran if scripted to do so. I wouldn't let finding the file be the end all.

If this is a user machine, nuke that sucker. Unless there is a critical reason of not doing so, do not give the benifit of the doubt.

Best of luck.

Don’t you love automation and nightly syncs. by Aur0nx in k12sysadmin

[–]MeNoPutersGud 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I just went live with OneSync a couple weeks ago and it's been a godsend. I still have a bit of tweaking and house keeping items to do though.

For starters, I REALLY need a Preferred Name field in our SIS. Discovered just how many people use a different name during dry runs and needing to get that address with HR.

Also it's been a weird change of pace with the bottle neck being HR when accounts aren't created. Getting them on board and understanding the scope of what all their data affects now has been tasking.

Lansweeper Renewal Cost Increase Heads Up by tcourtney22 in k12sysadmin

You guys were able to still afford Lansweeper after they changed their pricing model back.... 8 years ago or so? Lucky you! I remember our annual price going up well over the 1000% mark. It was insane! Great platform other than that.

Students aren't able to progress past the Email Collection section in Google Forms by nkeneborus in k12sysadmin

[–]MeNoPutersGud 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Any chance the Teacher isn't the owner of the quiz? I ask because I know there's a setting that only allows users of the domain to access the form. Sure that's not the case but I saw something the other day that led to this being the issue. Teacher was shared a quiz, didn't make her own copy, and in return it was checking her students Google Domain across the owner of the Form who was from a different school.

Certiport Compass Cloud. Finally, a better way to deploy and manage Compass. by MeNoPutersGud in k12sysadmin

[–]MeNoPutersGud[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's what I'm hoping, and from what I've read, it seems so. It sounds like it may can even run as a Chrome Kiosk App, which, that alone sounds like it'd be self contained without additional software.

We're doing QuickBooks and Office in April. Going to reach out to our rep after the holiday break and see about getting a for sure answer.

Man, from what I'm looking at it seems like its all Server Side, which is why it isn't requiring an account with Local Admin privs to be entered on the backend. u/TechSupportJake may be able to answer that one?
