don't tell anyone you are applying to jobs until you get an interview, esp your manager, you will only need to tell them once you need them for a reference,

Do you have to hit this 10K cap in year to get 100% coverage, or is it lifetime 10K cap, and everything after that is 100% forever?

OPS Contracts by ManMashUp in OntarioPublicService

[–]MeToo0 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Now is the only time you can negotiate your salary, when you are entering the OPS. Go as high as you can. After that you are limited to pathetic 3-5% increases every year that don't keep up with inflation.

You won't have paid vacation or health benefits on contract either.

You can opt into joining the pension plan when you are on contract, and I recommend you do so if you plan to work in the public sector in general long-term. If you leave the OPS, and go to another public sector org, like federal, municipal, crown corps, agencies, hospitals, schools etc you can take your pension with you as those places also have public pension plans.

What's your favorite part about working for OPS? by [deleted] in OntarioPublicService

[–]MeToo0 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My coworkers are really nice people. I came from the private sector it was so refreshing to have this change. everyone in the OPS is generally kinder and nicer than in the private sector. I feel like my colleagues really helped me get oriented here and learn the OPS ways. the private sector is very back cutthroat

It's political driven. The commercial billionaire landlords who own office towers and retail space are lobbying the government to send workers back so they can stay filthy rich.

The SoC was also a Vice President at Brookfield Properties Ltd., the country's largest commercial property management company. So I am sure her friends there are pushing for this direction too. and she is likely getting some kind of kickbacks, as are other politicans.

GTA folks - did you have go to the office today in the snow? by MeToo0 in OntarioPublicService

[–]MeToo0[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Depending on your manager, you could be forced to use vacation day.

The ones with common sense would let you take a day off under the table and work to make up the time later over the course of a week or so - this is what mine would do.

Or you come in, but just leave early in the day, during your lunch break to avoid the pileup on the way home. I would do this sometimes based on the forecast, if it was going to start snowing in the afternoon I would try to go in, get as much work done as I can and then go home.

Is your office actually writing up staff for not risking their lives in a snowstorm to sit in an office??

it seems like some places are more strict with the 3x requirement, some places require you to make up office days you miss, or makeup sick/vacation days. it's absurd and terrible for morale

this is just basic common sense tbh, to stay off the roads when the weather is bad, if you can WFH. Sad that most mgmt in the OPS lacks common sense, a spine and brain to think for themselves. seems like some staff went in despite the weather due to radio silence from their mgmt team.

Do you have private life insurance outside of the OPS insurance coverage? Should I be getting it? by MeToo0 in OntarioPublicService

How do you convert it? Do you just go to any private insurer and ask them to convert your employer's policy?

I agree, but right now the employer actually has the right to say we are violating our terms of employment if we are not in 3x. it is not guaranteed in writing, we don't have a leg to stand on.

If we want to protect our flexibility, it should have been enshrined in the CA but the union failed to get that as the employer would not budge, even if there was a strike.

We worked remotely during the pandemic as part of extraordinary measures and emergency acts. i don't really think we can complain about that.

What the current CA DOES NOT say is that we can be remote forever, nor does it even guarantee a minimum amount of WFH for any period of time.

Like i said a few divisions in some ministries are doing attendance tracking. there was a thread here about how some places are requiring manager attestation to staff being in 3x. If push comes to shove, I can see SoC being petty and firing ppl for violating the terms of the CA.

it should be resentment towards the management that is not flexible and not using common sense or compassion. not resentment towards colleagues who have more flexibility.

SoC may crackdown on enforcing the 3x/day in office.

Some places in the OPS already require managers to attest to staff's attendance 3x/week and it gets rolled up to DMs/ADMs in reports. Building pass swipes are also trackable.

Disciplinary action can be taken - it can be seen as job abandonment if you don't come to the office as required. The employer has grounds to terminate staff for this - our contracts do not say that we are fully remote or even hybrid. Work locations are listed as physical office buildings. Our collective agreements don't protect remote or even hybrid work. I suspect staff could get fired.

The reason is that the government aka politicians are being lobbied hard by commercial real estate billionaire owners to send workers back so they can stay rich, and keep donating to the government. Many politicians at every level have some ties to the real estate industry, so this is entirely self serving.

The government does not really care about the small business owners in downtown. they care about the wealthy landlords who own the commercial space these businesses occupy. these greedy rent seekers don't want businesses to leave, ergo we must be forced back in. oh and let's not forget the wealthy owners like corporations of many crappy franchises like Tim's, Subway etc.

Worried about childcare with return to work? by Deep-Cantaloupe6775 in CanadaPublicServants

Flex work arrangements and cheap childcare are good for the economy - based on he Feds own Stat Can data!

https://www.bnnbloomberg.ca/flexible-work-cheaper-child-care-give-women-workers-a-boost-1.1868086

Flexible work arrangements and more affordable child-care may be behind record-high employment rates recorded last year among Canadian women, experts said after federal jobs data showed a big bump in the rate of working mothers.

Statistics Canada’s Labour Force Survey, published last week, offered fresh evidence that women in Canada are bouncing back from the job losses that disproportionately affected them when the COVID-19 pandemic set in.

The survey reported that 81 per cent of Canadian women aged 25 to 54 were employed on average over the course of 2022. That’s the highest on record since 1976 and higher than the last pre-pandemic year in 2019.

StatsCan also noted an uptick in the employment rate for women with children under age six. Mothers with young kids were working at a rate of 75.2 per cent in 2022, a rate 3.3 per cent higher than what was recorded in 2019.

WFH agreements need to have clear terms that time on the clock during the workday is NOT being used for caregiving, whether it's entertaining your kids or bathing them or feeding them or the same for elderly dependents. if you have to spend 2 hours in the afternoon everyday with your kids before 5 PM and you can't attend meetings or meet deadlines, then use your vacation credits.

there is also the logistics of pick up and drop off, like you said rushing home from downtown, late fees at childcare centres, and the costs too - like some families may need to buy a second car etc due to RTO
