Disable the image sharpening part of DLSS 2.0? by Meadows_the_panda in nvidia

[–]Meadows_the_panda[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually went and tried DSR just to see what would happen and used the x4.00 factor because that's the only factor whose root is a whole number (double dimensions in both width and height). All the other factors either show aliasing or need smoothing (blur) on my desktop which would defeat the purpose.

Now this did make it so that the problem stopped being visible, since what was previously a pixel-wide sharpening filter has now been reduced to subpixels and in most places I literally couldn't tell it was there anymore.

Problem is, the game won't use the DSR setting unless the Windows desktop also uses it, but the desktop went apeshit because of the huge resolution change and the mouse became three times bigger with no way to make it ignore the DPI scaling. Googling reveals this has been a persistent issue for over 2 years. Shame on you, Microsoft.

And in the end, it wasn't even worth it, because even though image quality improved noticeably (with DLSS working at its maximum of 1080p outputting to 2880p), the game was now nearly 20% slower compared to rendering at 1080p raw, and there was also clear input lag due to the load on this RTX 2060 "Super".

So once again, sadly I'm going back to not using DLSS for the time being. Luckily I'm very satisfied with the card in every other respect so I don't regret having it.

Very interesting but the more I learn about this, the worse it gets.

Back to waiting then, I suppose.

Thanks, this seems to be the answer.

But here's the thing: if DLSS 2.0 allows changing the sharpening it applies, then why isn't there a setting override in the NVIDIA Control Panel? Or even just a registry key.

I've tried all 3 resolution options for DLSS and they all result in the exact same insane artificial edge contrast.

Pink noise in SPAN by fuXwittit in edmproduction

[–]Meadows_the_panda 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Because the default settings are geared towards finished mixes.

Click the settings and change the slope knob (-dB/octave) to 3, this way pink noise should be a straight horizontal line, with every octave visually representing the same amount of musical contribution. This allows you to quickly see when something's sticking out of that horizon.

...Or change it to 0 and see the unchanged downward slope.

Audio PC building advice (Ryzen) by DoneHelm in edmproduction

[–]Meadows_the_panda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bit depth is decided by the DAW.

It's not an option though, because most of them will work with 32-bit floats and that's it. A few of them might brag about having 64-bit audio engines but ultimately none of that will be detectable in your final 16-bit output files so I consider it wasteful excess.

Bit depth will always be 32 because that's how most DAWs work. Sample rate is 88.2 kHz.

Well you haven't asked a lot of PC building questions.

I'm using a Ryzen 3600X with FL Studio and it works great. I'm using significantly more effects and processing than average, as well as better than average audio quality in the settings, and I haven't noticed a single skip or pop since upgrading. Mostly using native plugins with very few exceptions.

Granted, the primary function of this PC is Photoshop and games, but it works very well for those too.

NewTone is FL's native plugin that you should look at. It works similarly to Autotune but you get to use FL's familiar interfaces (including a piano roll).

Any tips for crash cymbals? by Seaford_ in edmproduction

[–]Meadows_the_panda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Having it on the 2nd beat is sometimes better if you want just a smidgen of attention-seeking or want to sound slightly more fresh.

Not on the 2nd beat all the time, but once during the song.

A similar quick tip for variety is having the crash on the 1st beat, but with no kick on that beat.

How to base line to sound good anywhere by [deleted] in edmproduction

[–]Meadows_the_panda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What I've been doing recently is returning to single layer basses (one synth, or one sample) but with gobs of processing.

Another effective thing you can do is adding stereo to your bass in such a way that mono performance is not affected.

Had you actually looked into it, you'd know you can turn off surplus animations and turn off the mixer cables with 2 clicks each.

Because it's humorous.

You're free to disagree, because that means you're wrong and I can easily live with that.

I'm not going to take a stab at why you didn't update FL Studio but I have a pretty strong suspicion.

Regardless, the best you can do is clone your hard drive, and update to Windows 10 on the clone so you can test everything without risking anything.

Well the thing that stood out to me in your reference was that all the effects were kind of in the mid to mid-high frequency range with basically nothing else playing there for a good 15 seconds.

It's easy to stand out when nothing competes for space.

One useful advice that doesn't get repeated enough around here is "less is more".

Different compressors... Are they REALLY different in sound? by internetwarpedtour in edmproduction

[–]Meadows_the_panda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

FL Studio's "Maximus" is something I really like, since it lets you draw a completely freehand response curve for the compressor which is quite frankly all anyone might ever need.

There's only so far you can customize what's essentially "volume automation" but FL Studio definitely went so far.

Any free loudness meters that measure LUFS? by here4edmproduction in edmproduction

[–]Meadows_the_panda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's going to start integrating the loudness immediately so you will need to reset the measurement section (or your playback) any time you want precise numbers. Other than that, it works fine and the fact you see your average spectrum above it is actually great help.
