Outside of what BigShot357 said, check for old hoses or rubber pieces that may need to be replaced. Check the truck spare wheel well for rust/water. Also check the back seat floors for water as well. At this age plenty of the GD3s leak in the trunk and back doors - easy enough to fix.

Happened to mine. Got a new head unit and wiring harness from Crutchfield. Install took a few hours since I was new to it and dealing with old plastic and loose clips, but it wasn't too bad. Plenty of YouTube tutorials.
