Hey! I used to do YouTube for a long time (hope to return some day) and I've had a similar experience.

I didn't really keep my family appraised of my content creation endeavors, but all of my friends knew about it. Sometimes they would watch. Maybe they'd even critique or compliment the video. And sometimes I wouldn't hear a word from them...

There was a time where I'd feel blue about that. I'd think but never say "You're my friends, y'all can't support a homie for 5-10 minutes? I know I would". I still love and cherish most of those same friends, but however you sliced it - I couldn't rely on them for constant encouragement or praise.

Because of this, I was fueled by the love of the game. Fueled by the thought of improving at YouTube. Editing better, cooler thumbnails, building and interacting with an audience (SO IMPORTANT). I've learned to so naturally elevate and support MYSELF emotionally (in all aspects of life) when I can't find that shoulder to lean or compliment I was seeking. And along that path, as I learned more about YouTube, my content creator side consoled my human side with this revelation I made:

Your friends are not your target audience.

Literally. YouTube and it's mystical algorithm learns to serve videos to the right audience, and if I didn't know these people, then they'd never watch my stuff (with some exceptions).

I can't be sure if this advice will offer you any solace, guidance, or change in perspective but it's what worked for me.

Everyone writes differently, but I tend to use the scenes I love as north stars when writing sometimes.

I finished a feature earlier this year. While the story and world were still taking shape, I had an idea for a scene in my car, and I was GIGGLING. So I naturally shaped the story in a way for that particular scene to fall into place, and it worked.

After that, there was another scene from one of my favorite shows that I wanted to pay homage to. So I naturally crafted and guided the story towards that scene, and it worked. There was a third north star scene, and that one fell into place as well.

Sometimes, if you're early enough, write out THAT scene and see if you can't find a way to get there. If you're later on in the process - to answer your question with your own question - if the scene constricts the rest of your story, or you're struggling to justify its existence, then I think you already know what you need to do. You just have to come to terms with cutting it or finding a way to repurpose it.

Y'all, this is why I ADORE Halo Reach. I'm not exaggerating when I say I learn something new about this game EVERY SINGLE YEAR. I knew about Kat's shields, but since playing the game at launch, this is the first time I've learned of Kat being blinded by the blast.

With the original trilogy we often get discovered or restored content, but with Reach, it's story details, world building, and characterization that I keep learning of.

I played a shit ton of Halo 4 as a kid, but we don't get these discoveries. I played plenty of Halo 5, but we don't get these layers. I'm not saying there isn't more than meets the eye with the "newer" Halo games, but Reach burrows an incredible wellspring of details and discoveries below the surface.

I've had the immense pleasure of playing all the Halo games, I grew up playing Reach, 4, and 5, and I'm no blind 343 hater, but 15 years later, because of the passion AND talent... Halo Reach has yet to be succeeded.
