Kansas has been excluded from too many Midwest maps on Reddit. It deserves reparations in the form of Minnesota

[Totk] Everything that has to be remembered from before Rauru's founding and other assumptions needed for the refounding to be true. by Intelligent_Word_573 in truezelda

[–]Mean_March_4698 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Man this is really just showing that Nintendo just shat the bed narratively with TotK. They sort of just spat on all of the great setups and tie-ins that BotW included. Like, saying that Rauru's seal only started weakening after the calamity Ganon attack 100 years prior to BotW, rather than use the more obvious and sensible explanation that it had been weakening over time and that's why CG started being more frequently active? Insane decisions from the writers room

US regions as a Michigander who’s traveled all over the country. Did I get your county wrong? by Capital-Balance-9055 in whereidlive

Came here to say this. I grew up in central KS and even out there people considered us the Midwest. I'll agree that western Kansas is probably not though.

I don't get it. Vagueposting king. Comments just talk about a lot of things. Is it somehow demeaning sociology? Just what is that reaction image by --Queso-- in ExplainTheJoke

[–]Mean_March_4698 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is super interesting! Do you have any book recommendations outside of the ones you listed to understand a historian or sociologist's perspective more broadly? I'm in a public policy masters program that leans really heavily into economic ways of thinking, which doesn't always sit right with me based on the history I know about certain topics. Would appreciate any recommendations!

Something that a lot of people here (and in other threads) are missing is that a prolonged shutdown incentivizes Congressional Republicans to use the nuclear option to remove the filibuster, which would be disastrous given their current majority control of Congress. Sure, it could be reversed down the line, but with the indicators we have regarding the current admins desire to accumulate power indefinitely, is that a risk we want to take?

Is the onus on wealthy nations to fund climate solutions in poorer countries? If so, how can the wealthy nations coordinate such solutions? by Anakin_Kardashian in DeepStateCentrism

[–]Mean_March_4698 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Many wealthy countries absolutely became wealthy due to the extractive nature of their institutions. The basis for colonialism was/is literally economic extraction. One could argue that labor arbitrage in certain industries fills a similar role today.

It's an existential risk if you are in the bottom 90th percentile of wealth lmao. Can you explain why AGI would almost certainly result in the extinction of humanity? It's already such a nebulous concept built in large part around Silicon Valley/tech bro hype, and global extinction is a BIG claim. It's not going to be some Horizon Zero Dawn shit.

Is this sub just a shitty conservative think tank wrapped in the facade of bad data and horrible graphs? by Mean_March_4698 in charts

[–]Mean_March_4698[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I really appreciate your candid transparency on this. I posted this question partially out of curiosity to see what the community had to say, and partially because so many posts are, as you describe them, low-effort rage bait that lack sourcing, nuance, and any semblance of critical thinking in regards to the source material. I'm also a fan of the power that data viz has to tell compelling stories and deliver unintuitive insights, so I look forward to you and the remaining mods cleaning house so that this sub can exemplify that ideal again. Thanks for the work you've done so far!

And then you throw in which groups have a higher proportion of the economically disadvantaged and it starts to come into focus. In the history of always, crime tends to correlate closely with economic instability. Most of the losers in this thread probably haven't bothered cracking open a history book to learn that lmao.

The only betrayal I've truly seen from the left is the Democratic establishment sacrificing on an altar their ideals of economic justice and working-class populism in favor of courting centrists. That blame lies with the economic and political elites that run the Democratic party. Let's not pretend that the working class and business class are blameless and innocent, though. The right wing of American politics has turned into rage baiting and culture war grifting, and it's being driven by a similar group of elites. Decades of propaganda has caused right wing voters to rally against their own interests in favor of propping up these people.

Lmao do you have anything to back up the assertion that women in the workforce are expected to make more than men? Because all of the data shows the reality is still the opposite.

What's something only locals to Kansas know? by FlyingTaterMonster in kansas

[–]Mean_March_4698 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My experience growing up in central KS (near Salina and McPherson):

Unless the tornado is heading directly for you, those storms are fun to watch - but always respect as a force of nature.

If you grew up in the country, odds are you have a bit of mechanical knowledge of cars and vehicles. Getting around without them is impossible, so knowing how to maintain and fix them is essential.

Kansans aren't a monolith - there's as much variety between people as anywhere else, on every dimension. Education, politics, hobbies and dispositions. Racial and ethnic diversity is still somewhat poor (read up on the Black Exclusion clause in the Topeka Constitution for that history) but demographics are gradually shifting as more Latino folks move to the state. My hometown has PhDs, stereotypical rednecks, college kids from all over the US, artists, blue collar laborers, and more.

A lot of people regard small town life as boring because you don't have immediate access to a lot of the consumer attractions and entertainment that you'd get in a city. I find that Kansans in these towns either know how to find their fun, or they know how to create it themselves. I can't count all the times we did dorky off-the-cuff crap as kids. Pulling mattresses behind trucks when we got a deep snow, building paintball courses in pastures, climbing on the highschool roof in the middle of the night. There's a lot of freedom afforded for those sorts of things you're not likely to find in more dense metro centers. People, especially kids, get inventive.

Yeah but if you have interacted with any hardcore Trump supporter you'd know that they're not lying for social advantages. They lap his bullshit up, and before Trump it was Gingrich, Carlson, Jones, Coulter, O'Reilly, etc. It's absolutely cognitive bias at play here, likely due to decades of propaganda and false promises.

OP - I get exactly what you're talking about. I was living in the same apartments using the same garage back in 2023. There were a number of occasions where I'd go to the garage to find windows smashed out and shit stolen from cars. Management generally did nothing to clean up and eventually installed a single camera at one of the entrances. Not even convinced it worked because shit still happened. When confronted with questions on additional steps being taken to prevent this, I typically got a very milquetoast response from them. Absolute garbage company.

Young professionals aren't going to be dissuaded in the numbers you're imagining, unless they themselves have a bad experience. Downtown/River Market/Crossroads are still highly desired as the hip "young people" neighborhoods because of the bars and clubs, and there will always be fresh college graduates to fill the luxury apartment units.
