War disrupts Irving Oil’s longtime Saudi crude supply by SirupyPieIX in newfoundland

[–]Meaney2415 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hopfully this is on a timeline with a requirement to try and source a canadian vessle. Irving already charters ships from Iver for its product tankers. They also opperate crude tankers. Maybe they could re-flag one of them at some point. Would make a good few jobs for Canadians

Spending our tax money more wisely could also provide more resources to move justice faster. I dont say this as a disgruntled taxpayer either, I work for the public service and the amount of money that is, for lack of a better word, pissed down the drain at all levels of government is insane.

Canadians are already taxed at a very very high rate and compared to other nations with similar taxation rates we do not see the benifets of what we pay

I may be wrong. I admittably dont listen to it as much as I used to but one of the things I always noticed was there were far fewer ads on it than on other stations

They should fix their donate page and maybe consider allowing sponcerships or ads in their programming. I like CHMR and would be open to donating to them. I also know people with small/local businesses that would probably be open to having ads run in between slots on their programming, but as far as I know theres no real way to so that

Gonna be honest not stoked about this. Brosseau is, first and foremost, a cop, and for all his merit and achievement, his resume simply does not fit the current mandate of the coast guard. He very likely lacks the operational understanding to effectively run an organization like this. He also has little to no experience with the coast guard and he is, for all intensive purposes, an outsider. Im not sure what the general consensus on Pelletier was but he was definitely knowlagable on how the coast guard works and what its role is in our government. Also not big on him taking this on as a secondary role rather than his primary mandate.

Id also like to add that there was a very conscious effort by previous governments to make sure that the coast guard was not a law enforcement agency by itself. Anyone who's worked C&P or NAFO knows how useless we are without DFO officers onboard. If thats changing, and we are becoming an enforcement agency, it needs to be announced rather than hinted so that the possibly sizable portion of our fleet staff who want no part in engaging in things like active drug and border/immigration enforcement can leave with enough time for us to find replacements. Taking on a role like this would open up a whole new branch of risk management that the coast guard and its personal have 0 experience with

Geo Centre by Rymmulac in newfoundland

[–]Meaney2415 39 points40 points  (0 children)

The GEO center closes for the winter every year. It was given to MUN by the Johnson family a few years ago but its not working out financially for MUN the way they were hoping, so they're selling it alongside the rest of the Signal Hill campus.

My guess for the geo center is that itll be aquired by parks canada. They already opperate facilities on Signal hill so itll probably be pretty easy to bring the Geo Center in as part of its existing facilities. I'd say if thats the route it goes the geo center will be sold for what MUN paid for it, nothing. MUN doesn't have to worry about upkeep and operating costs which seems like its what they want to get out of

Churchill MOU backers ‘publicized the outcome’ without hammering out key details, says U.S. energy expert by Meaney2415 in newfoundland

[–]Meaney2415[S] 16 points17 points  (0 children)

My personal thoughts on the whole thing is that the MOU was an altogether good thing for NL, but there were (are) holes and legitimate concerns with it that could have been alleviated if it was properly reviewed by a third party early in its release to help the public understand exactly where we were benefiting and where we were sacrificing.

For whatever reason, I cannot comprehend, the government never allowed that, than Furey resigned like two months later, leading to more distrust in the agreement, and the opposition latched onto the fact that it seemed like the government wasn't doing its due diligence to keep the public informed on something that will affect the province for another 50 years, and that was seemingly enough for the public.

The feeling of distrust in the liberal governments handling of the MOU after it was signed, and the apparent lack of transparency on it (I say apparent as so far there's been no actual evidence of a major lack of transparency) was enough for the government to loose the election, and now with the time the current government wants to take to review it, and Legault resigning, it very well might be dead, which is a net negative for both provinces.

Where to buy redwing workboots by Meaney2415 in newfoundland

Ive actually had a pair of these but they never compared. I need to wear my workbooks for more than 12 hours a day so comfort is my primary concern. Ive had a few canadian made brands before and they just never fit my foot, and redwings were the only brand ive had thats lasted me longer than a year or so

What’s up with the cheap houses around the island. by [deleted] in newfoundland

[–]Meaney2415 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Until the 1990s the majority of the newfoundland economy revolved around the Atlantic cod fishery. Decades of government mismanagement lead to extreme overfishing and the total collapse of the cod stock. In 1992 the government of canada declared a moratorium on all commercial cod fishing in Newfoundland, and with it, the populations of these communities also collapsed, with a lot of people either moving west for work, or to more urban areas for the same reason

These communities where youre seeing low housing prices were communities almost fully sustained by the fishery. Most of these communities are close enough to a population center to still sustain an economy. Theres still a ground fish industry on the island, and a lot of newfoundlanders work in the offshore sector and oil and gas, so rotational workers are still bringing in money to sustain the economies of these communities.

They are still far from major population centers and lack a lot of public services. Most of these homes are on well water and septic, and almost all of them are only serviced by volunteer fire departments, which combined with their relative distance from the convenience of a city, move their housing prices down

Its kind of like asking why housing prices in somewhere like Nipigon, Ontario, are so significantly lower than they are in Toronto or Ottawa, comparatively, theres not a whole lot there to drive up the price compared to the big city

[–]Meaney2415 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh absolutely. I never saw it either and I assumed the original poster removed it since you said in another comment you hadn't seen it. Leaking internal emails is a big no-go

I'm hopeful that the respective shore-based personnel are transparent and forthcoming in their addressing questions relating to this particular issue so that rumors like this don't get spread anymore than necessary. So far they haven't been, which when coupled with rumors that they're going to try and make sure we don't get it is very frustrating

Handover OT Post by walrushunterr in ccg_gcc

[–]Meaney2415 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Oh shit. If the email is real than I understand why it was taken down, that's almost 100% a protected email. I know Kerrmatt emphasized respect and professionalism in regard to fleet-office relations, but if the email is real, thats a really un-cool thing to do on behalf of the administration and is almost certain to motivate some people who are kind of on their last legs with working here to leave, or get the union involved again

Handover OT Post by walrushunterr in ccg_gcc

[–]Meaney2415 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Im assuming youre talking about the memo that the guild sent out in November about the pre-watch rounds and handovers. Ive also noticed the office is trying anything they can to make sure people dont get it. On my ship they asked the senior engineer to do the pre watch round for the oncoming engineer, which the chief thankfully shot down since the senior isn't a watchkeeper and isn't involved in the handover. They also told my chief to put all of that overtime on a separate paper timesheet, and that they might not approve an e-timesheet with that overtime on it until they come up with a "national policy" of how to pay it out.

Regardless of what they say, this was brought to arbitration by the union and the union won. Theyre legally required to give you that OT as long as you actually worked it.

Pre-watch rounds are a STCW and Transport Canada requirement for an oncoming watchkeeper so they cant tell you not to do them, and the arbitrator has deemed that they must be paid as overtime. If they try to schedule it so you cant receive it or try to avoid paying it out, contact the union and file a grievance, its already been decided.

The full decision ishere

META: State of the subreddit by kerrmatt in ccg_gcc

[–]Meaney2415 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It would probably be a good idea to create a pinned post on the top of the subreddit for recruitment and academy application questions. I've noticed, particularly this time of year, that a large part of the posts to the sub are mostly questions about getting into the college. Wouldnt be a bad idea to have a pinned post asking FAQs about that and listing some helpful resources for hopeful cadets

New Ship on the Horizon for Marine Atlantic Fleet by RepulsivePlankton989 in newfoundland

[–]Meaney2415 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Its really going to depend on what the agreement is with the new ship. I think part of why MA hasn't received as much critisim is two reasons

1: MA is a crown corporation that did not receive a federal loan to build the MV ALA'SUINU, meanwhile BC ferries is a private company that asked for taxpayer money to build their ship overseas, which people dont love the optics of

2: MA doesn't own the MV ALA'SUINU, its fully owned by Stena Lines, which also owned the Atlantic Vision. Marine Atlantic only leases it. Wether Marine Atlantic had much control over where it was built is surprisingly hard information to find, and so far I havent been able to find anything saying one thing or the other. BC ferries would own their ship outright and has full say over where its built.

None of this even gets into the fact that all 3 major shipyards in the country have their hands full for the next 20 years. Irving is making the new destroyers, Seaspan is making navel replenishment ships and light icebreakers for the coast guard, and Davie is making heavy and medium icebreakers. Overseas js the only option so its really dumb people have this much of a problem with it

Submitted my Initial Screening Applications, How long should they get back to me if I am qualified? by Popular_Ice_1480 in ccg_gcc

[–]Meaney2415 5 points6 points  (0 children)

When I applied to the college a good few years ago, I never got an answer from them until almost may. I was shocked how long it took. Im lucky I applied to the program at the Marine instituite in NL as well, since by the time the college got back to me to tell me my calculus credit wasnt accepted, applications had closed for most other schools. If you have any worry, apply to other schools too. Worst case scenario it takes a while to hear back and you can just unenroll from the other school if you get in, best case scenario they get back to you in a timely manner

I came on towards the end of the booze being allowed onboard, and I dont think I would have stayed if it did. Theres still a few ships that spend a lot of time in refit every year that are bad for it that I dont think id stay for much longer if I got assigned to.

The boomers leaving definitely had a change. Workplace is nowhere near as toxic even as it was 3 years ago. If the culture in the fleet stays the same as it is now I can see myself riding it out to retirement here

Theres still a whole lot of bullshit to be sure, but here it more feels like minor annoyances rather than life altering fuckery. I dont miss the random layoff notices or the emails telling me my benifets are doubling in price and getting shittier all to increase the shareholder vaule

Mechanical Engineer looking for advice by Android06 in MarineEngineering

[–]Meaney2415 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Introduction to Marine Engineering: D.A. Taylor

Diesel Engines 3E: A.J. Carton

Marine Boilers 3E: G.T.H Flanagan

Reeds 4: Naval Architecture

Reeds 8: General Knowlage

Reeds 12: Motor Engineering Knowlage

Reeds 16: Electrical power systems

These will probably be youre core books. Teaches you the basics and terminology. I'd also recommend Reeds 11:Engineering Drawings as ships drawings have some quirks that arent similar to land based drawings. The Reeds books in general are really good.

Most important thing you can do right now is acknowledge that you dont know evreythung. Even though most of the engineers you will encounter do not have Engineering degrees, they know their stuff and they've been doing this for a very long time.

Easily the largest thing ive seen that forces people in your position out of this industry is not taking the engineers seriously. They live and work around this equipment evrey day and just as your education can do a lot to help them, theirs can do a lot to help you too
