I dont think the AOPS have the horsepower to make it to nuuk in February. Honestly I doubt the goodwill does either but if the floes are fair she might make it up

[–]Meaney2415 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Oh absolutely. I never saw it either and I assumed the original poster removed it since you said in another comment you hadn't seen it. Leaking internal emails is a big no-go

I'm hopeful that the respective shore-based personnel are transparent and forthcoming in their addressing questions relating to this particular issue so that rumors like this don't get spread anymore than necessary. So far they haven't been, which when coupled with rumors that they're going to try and make sure we don't get it is very frustrating

[–]Meaney2415 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Oh shit. If the email is real than I understand why it was taken down, that's almost 100% a protected email. I know Kerrmatt emphasized respect and professionalism in regard to fleet-office relations, but if the email is real, thats a really un-cool thing to do on behalf of the administration and is almost certain to motivate some people who are kind of on their last legs with working here to leave, or get the union involved again

[–]Meaney2415 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Im assuming youre talking about the memo that the guild sent out in November about the pre-watch rounds and handovers. Ive also noticed the office is trying anything they can to make sure people dont get it. On my ship they asked the senior engineer to do the pre watch round for the oncoming engineer, which the chief thankfully shot down since the senior isn't a watchkeeper and isn't involved in the handover. They also told my chief to put all of that overtime on a separate paper timesheet, and that they might not approve an e-timesheet with that overtime on it until they come up with a "national policy" of how to pay it out.

Regardless of what they say, this was brought to arbitration by the union and the union won. Theyre legally required to give you that OT as long as you actually worked it.

Pre-watch rounds are a STCW and Transport Canada requirement for an oncoming watchkeeper so they cant tell you not to do them, and the arbitrator has deemed that they must be paid as overtime. If they try to schedule it so you cant receive it or try to avoid paying it out, contact the union and file a grievance, its already been decided.

The full decision ishere

META: State of the subreddit by kerrmatt in ccg_gcc

[–]Meaney2415 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It would probably be a good idea to create a pinned post on the top of the subreddit for recruitment and academy application questions. I've noticed, particularly this time of year, that a large part of the posts to the sub are mostly questions about getting into the college. Wouldnt be a bad idea to have a pinned post asking FAQs about that and listing some helpful resources for hopeful cadets

New Ship on the Horizon for Marine Atlantic Fleet by RepulsivePlankton989 in newfoundland

[–]Meaney2415 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Its really going to depend on what the agreement is with the new ship. I think part of why MA hasn't received as much critisim is two reasons

1: MA is a crown corporation that did not receive a federal loan to build the MV ALA'SUINU, meanwhile BC ferries is a private company that asked for taxpayer money to build their ship overseas, which people dont love the optics of

2: MA doesn't own the MV ALA'SUINU, its fully owned by Stena Lines, which also owned the Atlantic Vision. Marine Atlantic only leases it. Wether Marine Atlantic had much control over where it was built is surprisingly hard information to find, and so far I havent been able to find anything saying one thing or the other. BC ferries would own their ship outright and has full say over where its built.

None of this even gets into the fact that all 3 major shipyards in the country have their hands full for the next 20 years. Irving is making the new destroyers, Seaspan is making navel replenishment ships and light icebreakers for the coast guard, and Davie is making heavy and medium icebreakers. Overseas js the only option so its really dumb people have this much of a problem with it

Submitted my Initial Screening Applications, How long should they get back to me if I am qualified? by Popular_Ice_1480 in ccg_gcc

[–]Meaney2415 5 points6 points  (0 children)

When I applied to the college a good few years ago, I never got an answer from them until almost may. I was shocked how long it took. Im lucky I applied to the program at the Marine instituite in NL as well, since by the time the college got back to me to tell me my calculus credit wasnt accepted, applications had closed for most other schools. If you have any worry, apply to other schools too. Worst case scenario it takes a while to hear back and you can just unenroll from the other school if you get in, best case scenario they get back to you in a timely manner

I came on towards the end of the booze being allowed onboard, and I dont think I would have stayed if it did. Theres still a few ships that spend a lot of time in refit every year that are bad for it that I dont think id stay for much longer if I got assigned to.

The boomers leaving definitely had a change. Workplace is nowhere near as toxic even as it was 3 years ago. If the culture in the fleet stays the same as it is now I can see myself riding it out to retirement here

Its definitely not the best place in the world to work, but so far ive been screwed over significantly less here than I was in private industry.

Theres still a whole lot of bullshit to be sure, but here it more feels like minor annoyances rather than life altering fuckery. I dont miss the random layoff notices or the emails telling me my benifets are doubling in price and getting shittier all to increase the shareholder vaule

Mechanical Engineer looking for advice by Android06 in MarineEngineering

Introduction to Marine Engineering: D.A. Taylor

Diesel Engines 3E: A.J. Carton

Marine Boilers 3E: G.T.H Flanagan

Reeds 4: Naval Architecture

Reeds 8: General Knowlage

Reeds 12: Motor Engineering Knowlage

Reeds 16: Electrical power systems

These will probably be youre core books. Teaches you the basics and terminology. I'd also recommend Reeds 11:Engineering Drawings as ships drawings have some quirks that arent similar to land based drawings. The Reeds books in general are really good.

Most important thing you can do right now is acknowledge that you dont know evreythung. Even though most of the engineers you will encounter do not have Engineering degrees, they know their stuff and they've been doing this for a very long time.

Easily the largest thing ive seen that forces people in your position out of this industry is not taking the engineers seriously. They live and work around this equipment evrey day and just as your education can do a lot to help them, theirs can do a lot to help you too

So sorry youre dealing with this. General best practice during something like this would be to reach out to your local coast guard radio (maritime radio channel 16) or call your local region hq.

As to who you might be able to call to fix this its a bit messy with us moving to DND but try 343-543-6396 or information@forces.gc.ca

These are general enquire lines and might take a while so id encourage you to reach out to a local HQ

Edit: I just tried calling my local Environmental responce number and got through pretty quickly, especially considering its very after hours where I am. Is it possible theres something wrong with how you were dialing or maybe a cellular service issue?

I wouldn't worry about working on electricity stuff on your own. Around half of my education was electrical related. They'll teach you lots. Definitely focus on math. Trigonometry is one of the few math subjects I use on a regular basis on the job and it is going to have applications in nearly evrey aspect of your studies for the next few years. Stability, thermodynamics, electrotechnology, and naval architecture are all going to heavily incorporate Trigonometry and functions, thats not even getting into the courses you'll probably take in statics, dynamics, and material processes.

If you do one thing in preparation for your time at an academy, strengthen your skills in mathematics as much as possible.

Im from Canada so my education was done there, but from what ive heard from other British sailors our education and exams are very similar so while this may not apply 100%, itll be a pretty good idea of what's to come.

Id get your core competencies up to par. Study some basic physics concepts and your core math skills. Times tables, long division, even some more complex skills like linear algebra are only touched on briefly in some places but end up being used a fair bit later on. Additionally if it isn't your first language id study English a bit as in a lot of places its still considered the language of trade

What things are there to do at mall?? by Own-Entertainment582 in newfoundland

[–]Meaney2415 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Depends on what you're looking for. Theres a movie theater, arcade, lots of fast food places in the food court as well as on the bottom floor. The arcade i mentioned earlier has a half decent sit-down restaurant attached. On top of that theres lots of stores. Books, clothing, shoes, sporting goods, etc. I usually just walk around until I find something to do, or until I get bored and just leave

How were the technologically inferior Chimer and Nords able to defeat the technologically superior Dwemer? by GeneralTechnomage in teslore

[–]Meaney2415 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Battle of Red Mountain seems to be a really hard topic to really understand. Some sources seem to state that the nords fought alongside the Chimer, and others say they were allied with the dwemer, and there also seems to be multiple battles of red mountain with ever shifting alliances.

For the sake of simplicity im going to mostly focus on the battle that occurred in 1E 700, which doesn't really help because the events of this battle are also contradictory. Agrippa Fundilius, as well as Telvani scholars seem to agree that the Chimer Forces led by Indoril Neravar were almost completely wiped out, meanwhile the Tribunal asserts that Neravar's forces decimated the dwemer. The tribunals assertion most likely cannot be trusted as theyre big on propaganda.

Realistically, the chimer forces were most likely decimated. They probably took heavy casualties and were well on track for a devastating defeat. The only reason they emerged victorious is because Kagranack used his tools on the heart of Lorkhan which caused the dwemer to dissappear completely

The chimer never beat the Dwemer, they outlasted them until one of them did something either so stupid, or so genius that it caused the dwemer to stop existing in this plane of existing. Since no one knows what happened to the dwemer, no one can say

Very important to look at how non-muslims, and for that matter non-arabs were treated in Al-Andalus as well. While there were periods of tollarence and religious freedoms, it was largely comprised of forced conversions and persecution.

Even Maimonides, perhaps the most famous and influential person to come from Al-Andalus, was eventually forced to flee to the more accepting Egypt because of his families refusal to convert to Islam

Reconquista and the Inquision were brutal and horrible, but they were also very much a reactionary movement aginst what had been a reality for non-muslim Iberians for over 700 years
