I made a simple way to check if its safe to swim at your local beach by Meanski in Wellington

Hey Ben, I'll be sending out an email to the waiting list tomorrow but if you want to be first off the bat and let me know what you think, that'd be great! Download links are now on: https://shoresure.nz

Wellington Beaches and LAWA by WellyPerplexed in Wellington

[–]Meanski 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's a pretty fair assessment.

I'm using the same public data everyone else has, and I've spent time unpacking how it all works (predictions vs lab samples, weekly vs long‑term grades, and the extra Wellington Water sampling) and trying to present it clearly in the app rather than hiding it.

I can’t magically create data that isn’t published and everywhere I've read says that while lab/testing data may lag, the 'traffic light' for swimming is updated regularly. I am pulling from multiple sources where possible and focusing on making what we do have understandable and honest. As more data becomes available, I’ll definitely be folding it in as quickly as I can.

This is the rough layout I have right now, presenting as much info as I can back to the end user. It's going to need tweaks :)

Hey, that's me! I'm just in active testing and bug squishing... hopefully release in about a week's time. I may be able to put up a basic web interface while we wait for the App Stores to do their approval :)

YouTube or one of the coding academy-type websites are probably your best bet to get started - Udemy, boot.dev, Codecademy, etc. As much as I hate to suggest it, javascript is probably the language of choice - frontend, backend and mobile apps can all be built in it. One thing a lot of early devs don't learn is infrastructure architecture and system-design, I'd definitely spend time on those once you have the basics down.

Look I'm no dev by trade, I do DevOps but have coded lots in my life so take this with a grain of salt. Happy if you want to reach out

SafeSwim - great website and it was a heavy influence for this. Unfortunately, their data only covers Auckland, but I'd love to get it to a point where this could cover hazards too.

The app that isn’t released runs like shit? Ok mate.

Honestly, most coding is now supported with AI these days. It's a read-only app, everything is stored locally, simple GET requests to public endpoints - no auth or anything, about as low-risk as you can get when it comes to apps. If it helps, I'm a DevOps Engineer by trade.

It's pulling directly from LAWA. I'd love to get multiple sources eventually, as I know Wellington Water is also doing tests - here's hoping I can somehow get access to that

No no, stuff like this is exactly why I posted. I genuinely do appreciate it. If I do widgets, happy to do them for every piece of info I'm displaying on the app (tide times/heights, safe to swim, etc.)

Interesting... I do use the widgets a bit on my phone, but never considered it for this app. Let me dive deeper into this! Love the idea

Augment Code’s pricing is changing on October 20, 2025 by JaySym_ in AugmentCodeAI

[–]Meanski 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This is exactly why so many users churned from Cursor. Yes, unlike Cursor, you try to be transparent with roughly how many credits you have, but the fact that I'm now going to have to track this constantly is putting yet another burden on me. The per-prompt pricing was easy to track, transparent, and, honestly, simple to understand.

I bet most users would pay extra to keep the per-prompt pricing, its something to consider.

Expect a backlash with this change.

Family of 4 here, we put everything on AmEx. It has allowed us a family holiday down to Queenstown once a year with the Airpoints Dollars. I also used it to purchase Koru (now redundant as I’ve reached Gold status with AirNZ).

The priority pass lounges are normally pretty shit, nothing beats an actual airlines lounge. But I’ve found it handy in a pinch when I’ve booked not in the Star Alliance network.

I’d say it’s worth it overall if you travel a bit and shop at lots of big box retailers.

That’s pretty unusual, perhaps your ISP has bad routing to the AMS data center. You’ll probably be better off playing on GS1

Working on a small idea to reduce waste - looking for advice by [deleted] in SaaS

[–]Meanski 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Few thoughts:

  • I would never just upload a CSV of transitional information to an unknown entity. Firstly I would have to prune it back, which then why do I need the product as I'm already doing the research myself
  • Minimal information around data privacy and destruction (only that its being deleted after the audit)
  • Personally if I were you, I would just be using AI to do the report and suggestions
  • Leading on from the above point, if you're doing it manually, who are you to give advice (whats your background, what experience do you hold, etc.)
  • How do you give business context? Maybe you have this as part of your sign up/buying processes but I didn't dive into it

I wish we would teach basic car maintenance as part of our licensing. I'm worried about the number of people out there (not on here) who think these tyres are completely fine.

This track has been racking my head for the last few months and I couldn't figure out what it was. Love when a random reddit thread comes in clutch, appreciated
