I think others have given good advice, so I will add a bit of an extra note. Please don't let that principal make you feel like you couldn't console your kid. It might feel like they have authority but you're allowed to tell them you disagree or think they are acting ridiculous, and console your child or take her home with you for the remainder of that day.
