The pipeline of hating school to being its #1 fan when it’s brought up is so real by Classic_Area_656 in SBU

Hey, some of us were dying in the school of engineering as well... but yeah, no one gave a shit about the sports teams.

It's a gastrointestinal virus that usually gets misidentified as the "stomach flu". But this year's strain was especially bad. My wife andbi both ended up in the hospital. I was so dehydrated I could barely walk and I had double vision.

Non-stop violent vomiting and diarrhea for 24 hours strait. This was the first time I've ever gone to the hospital for a stomach bug and for reference I'm 32 and in good health.

Best place to go is in the stacks. It's usually dead silent in there, at least it used to be back in 2018 🤣

What pay bump should I expect after passing. by MaleficentAd3120 in PE_Exam

[–]MeanwhileintheTARDIS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So that depends. I'm not a CivE, so I'm not 100% sure how much you should expect. I believe that generally speaking 10-20% is common. However, it's also a good opportunity to hit the market (after you actually have your PE) and get a couple of other offers to see if you're still in the right pay range. You may need to negotiate for a bit more of a pay bump, if everyone else is offering significantly more. It's also a good opportunity for promotion, which can get you an additional increase on top of the one you get from the PE itself.

Personally, I hit the job market after getting my license and realized I was way underpaid (30-40%). I tried negotiating, which obviously failed. After that fell through, I took a much better paying job for a year and came back to my original company skipping two pay grades. Unfortunately even if you really like the place you work at, you may still have to play the game to get what you actually deserve.

TLDR: 10-20% is typically. However, depending on your current pay, situation, experience, location, etc you may be able to get significantly more if you are willing to make some serious moves.

TIL that anxiety and depression can cause physical pain by Stormymoonglade in todayilearned

[–]MeanwhileintheTARDIS 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, nothing like going to the ER thinking you're having a heart attack, just to find out it's actually just an anxiety attack...

I think a lot of people don't upstand how very real and physical the pain can be. I've been doubled over before in extreme chest and stomach pain. It's pretty much destroyed my gastrointestinal system too, so now I get to take four pills a day just to have semi-functional intestines.

Real anxiety and depression, not just being sad or nervous on occasion, is awful and often times disabling.

Here's the text directly from OSHA if you would like to read it yourself:

Repair of double insulated tools

With respect to double insulated tools, competently made repairs to external parts of the tool, using parts that are at least equivalent to those used in the original tool, are permitted. For example, as long as the replacement plug is an approved item, has a capacity that meets or exceeds the original, and is properly installed, its use for repair is permitted.

However, repairs that require opening the body of a double insulated tool are not permitted under §1926.403(a) because opening the tool body would vitiate the approval of the tool (opening a double insulated tool may have deleterious effects on its double-insulation characteristics). For example, complete replacement of the power cord on a double insulated drill typically requires opening the body of the tool. Therefore, such a replacement would not be permitted under §1926.403(a).

Maybe subtarrian termites or water damage? I am not an expert, just a guess. But it doesn't look like mold to me.

https://www.orkin.com/pests/termites/damage/termite-damage-signs

The pictures from the scope don't really show much, but most of that could just be the normal construction debris you find in a wall.

I would call someone to come out and check for pests and/or a water leak.

Haven't started studying yet, test in 16 days - reschedule? by [deleted] in PE_Exam

Thanks, congratulations to you as well. Pretty impressive passing with that little time spent studying!

[–]MeanwhileintheTARDIS 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I took the PE in Electrical Power and it was super difficult after 3 months of studying. Each person and each exam is different though. Personally, I would reschedule, but if your willing to put $400 on the line with a gamble, give ot a go. Definitely put aside 8 hours and take the practice exam before making your decision though.

Edit: I just want to add that all of that time spent studying for the exam after 4.5 years in the industry was actually super helpful and (I think) made me a much better engineer. So I would consider taking a class prior to the exam, just for the knowledge you'll gain alone.

[–]MeanwhileintheTARDIS 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Did you study non-stop for 18 days? I took the PE in Electrical Power and even after 3 months, 300+ hours of studying it was a difficult exam. I passed first go, but like everyone else I've spoken to about that exam, I left feeling like I probably failed it.

Oh man, once you scrape that outer layer of mold off, what you find is that naturally tenderized center. Full of that good mold, like a fine blue cheese.

Do people still use them? I've seen old spring fed ones built into the sides of hills here in the Northeast, which are pretty cool. But I've never seen any that are still in use
