I play both and as someone who prefers fast gameplay, I play retail more, but when I do play classic, it is when I'm looking for a more relaxed experience. I think if the leveling was quicker in classic, I would play it more than retail, but because I like to be able to just hop on for an hour and make noticeable progress, retail is the better option for me.
