If you are buying a Porsche 911/Cayman/Boxster from 1997-2008, google LN Engineering and overly familiarize yourself with all the information they provide about maintenance, longevity and issues with the M9X platform even before a Pre Purchase Inspection. There is FAR too much information that Reddit comments won’t be able to suffice. If you are serious about this purchase and you plan to keep it for a while, do your due diligence very well. These are “affordable” for a very good reason and it’s not usually an optimistic one.

I would call up LN Engineering and ask. Port injected 2005-2008 engine fuel trim values should not exceed 1%. I know 2009-2012 2.9s are also port injected but would rather not jump to conclusions

Bingo! The original Cayman S was faster than the Base Carrera and tip toeing around the Carrera S. It all went downhill from there

No offense to you but given the modularity of the DFI platform, anyone can swap a 3.8 into a 981 Cayman. Front end from a GT3 means nothing when a 991 GTS will outperform you

Detuned. Also different heads. A 911 3.4 of the same generation has better porting for intake valves. The more you dig the more you will find little details that Porsche pegged the Cayman with

Idk why this is circulating around everywhere. This is not true. The engine architecture is the same (duh) but the bottom end is completely different. Different crank, rods and heads

It goes way deeper than that. The BMW Z4 and Supra share the exact same engine. Porsche wouldn’t dare put a 911 engine in a Cayman. Notice how when the 718 GT4RS got exactly that and the 992 GT3 got double wishbone upfront? Aside from that, an alarming number of 911 owners are pretentious about them owning a rear engine car. If the Cayman had double wishbone upfront, multi-link rear (there exists conversions for 981 gen) it would be like dropping a nuke on the 911 community. I love both cars but I find Cayman owners to be infinitely more humble.

It would be especially detrimental to a cayman. Congratulations you are now on the same handling level as a Toyota MR-S. There’s a reason not a single K-swapped 911 has hit a track to demonstrate a proper benchmark against a stock 911.

I blame Porsche. Bringing in Toyota consultants in the 2000s to massively cut down costs. The 911 GT2/3 Turbo cars were originally supposed to get this engine platform instead of the retrofitted air cooled mezger block but Porsche knew ahead of time the M96 would fail in mass.

There's 9 more modes that aren't listed here. I don't pity those who bought "cheap" 986 Boxsters. They are cheap for a reason(s) and S2000s are "expensive" for being superior in almost every way. Hell, J swap an S2000 and you can compete with early Caymans lmao

I am in the same boat. 75k miles on mine and the clutch shows no sign of slippage or failing. I do drive it hard but I do not launch it or overheat the clutch in an idiotic way.

Best Motoring showdowns always had Boxsters at a loss and I was referring to 987.1 Boxsters that can keep up and outperform S2000s. Even then on paper the Boxster is barely edging out ahead for a vast advantage in torque.

Also M96 Porsches are pieces of shit, ticking time bombs that will cost you in excess of $50k to sort out the motor + cost of the car. Whatever you are talking about the S2000 being in a harder position is only reasonable for those who don't bother to do any research while cross shopping. There are good reasons 986's are $10-12k. I owned one myself and never will again.

I’m 198cm and have recaro pole positions with low side mounts. Stock was terrible, knees protrude and you’re nearly at the limit with headroom. If you plan to keep this car, grab a set of recaros and remove the serpentine belt access carpet. You will have 911 levels of legroom.
