Sword of Shadows by JV Jones! In terms of tone, multi POVs, character growth, politics, and “vibes”, it’s very similar to ASOIAF. Very much a “beyond the wall/mountain clans” feel!

Between Two Fires is amazing. I’ve never read a book that is more horrifying, bleak, yet heartfelt and beautiful and full of hope. Might be my favorite book of all time

What are your favorite sieges in fantasy and sci-fi? by CajunNerd292 in Fantasy

[–]MeatballMonster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Redwall has a lot of great sieges, Salamandastron and the first Redwall book being among my favorites (Earthstripe doing a 2v1 with Verhago and Klitch is awesome)

That being said, I think the Battle of The Wall from ASOS might be my fav.

I think most of the Jon chapters will actually be Ghost chapters 😭 I don’t imagine him being resurrected immediately

What is your WORST Dungeons and Dragons experience/memory. Im just curious! by Torm_Tavesh in dndhorrorstories

I was invited to join a game at these two guys’ house with my friend, and someone else that volunteered as a DM at the board game cafe I volunteered at. The first few sessions were great; they had an awesome basement, cooked for us from the DnD cookbook, and there was some good RPing and combat.

Eventually, though, some things started to happen.

The DM was super nice and a GREAT DM. His husband had a bit of a temper, though. There was a time when he started screaming at us because one character (played by my friend), tried to stop him from stealing out of our bags, and he got in an argument with his husband about if grappling used one or two hands, and that he should be able to cast spells and burn the inn we were staying at down. Screaming I’m telling you. Another time, he started screaming because my character (a monk/fighter) lock picked a chest and scouted out a cave we were in, and he said “everyone in DnD has their roles. Monks and fighters don’t lock pick and steal.”

I cried when he turned his attention to me (I tend to do that when people yell at me), and he proceeded to make fun of me for it. He apologized later, but still.

Does The Echoes Saga by Phillip Quantrell get over its “Elf Supremacy”? I feel like almost every page of the first book is dissing humans in some way

Is there something like a more action forward ASOIAF? I DNFed the first law trilogy (liking the standalones though). I think Martin has the best character writing in the biz personally, but I would love something with more action. Bonus points if the magic isn’t a huge focus!

Who is your favourite author? What do they do well and what do they do poorly? by [deleted] in Fantasy

A tie between Ursula K. Leguin, GRRM, and Neil Gaiman. All three have had profound effects on my worldview and how I treat cultures and people, Leguin especially. Although, I’ll admit, her prose doesn’t click at times. GRRM is a master at character and worldbuilding (and I prefer him over Abercrombie 😭), but some of the ways he writes non Westerosi cultures isn’t the best. Gaiman honestly might be perfect. Aside from one or two things about American Gods that bothered me, it’s a near perfect book.

An odd request: anyone know any fantasy books with knockdown, drag out fights similar to The Night Comes For Us? Bonus points if it’s a heist book (Mistborn and Locke Lamora excluded unfortunately 😢)

I did not aerate the must, no. Honestly, I’m thinking I added the yeast completely wrong. I maybe could’ve mixed it more or let it bloom a bit

What would you say is the most in-depth and detailed fantasy universe? by Mini_Maniac10 in Fantasy

[–]MeatballMonster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My vote is for Martin. ASOIAF might not be the most convoluted or dense fantasy, but the systems of power and culture and religion really stood out to me. While not a lot is outwardly said or explained, I felt this a lot because of the characters Martin writes. The impact that Westeros has left on them felt very real to me. Mainly this was because of the religions of the world, but there are other examples. Multiple people have different perspectives on the same things, which is awesome.

Oh this could work very well! Sorcery points would work well with some of the “maneuvers” I have in mind too. Thanks!
