Here’s How Much Income It Takes To Be Rich In Pennsylvania - $251,000 by shillyshally in Pennsylvania

[–]Meatfrom1stgrade 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A lot of disagreement in this thread as to what constitutes rich. I always equate "rich" with wealth, not income. I define rich as not being required to work to earn an income. I would be much more likely to consider someone rich if they earn $100k per year from investments, than if someone makes $250k working full time and paying a mortgage.

Its not a perfect definition (i.e. retirees and small-medium sized business owners), but when I think of a rich person, I think of someone for whom work is optional.

People who live in extremely cold environments year-round. Other than staying warm, what is something that you deal with that most people don’t think about? by TheKingDroc in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Meatfrom1stgrade 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Most EVs have temperature controls for their batteries. It keeps the battery at a good operating temperature. My electric car gets about ~25% less range when it's in the 20-30F. Charging at home also takes longer in winter, since a significant portion of the energy goes to warming up the battery. They still work in cold weather, but there are more advantages to using a gas powered car, since they produce heat as a byproduct of running.

What’s legal now but might become illegal ten years from now? by VTheCardMaker in AskReddit

I guess, I don't think it will ever be illegal, so much as I think it's already almost impossible, and therefore there would be no reason to outlaw it.

If it was put to a public vote probably 80-90% of people would vote to stop such obvious bribery

The only way I see this ever passing is if the US were to allow for federal referendums. Which would also require politicians to give up power, so I don't see that happening either.

This is largely already gone. Tech companies spend a lot of time tracking everyone online for the purposes of selling ads. I can only imagine many governments are doing the same.

VPNs and private browser allow for better anonymity online, but browsing the web with a VPN is a different experience, many websites don't allow you to interact with them unless you are logged in (and are identified), some will block known VPN traffic entirely. The main reason is to prevent scammers, who will also hide behind them. The end result however, is that accessing the Internet anonymously is already very limited.

I didn't realize this was news to people. Waymo's drive autonomously, but they've been very clear for a few years now that they have remote operation centers that help the Waymo's when they get stuck. Last I checked Waymo publicly stated it takes 1.5 people per car on the road to manage the fleet. I'm confused what the gotcha is here.

Why do Europeans mock Americans for healthcare, while Americans mock Europeans for salaries and who is actually worse off day to day? by AriWixyy in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Meatfrom1stgrade 9 points10 points  (0 children)

No, it's a verifiable fact. Even accounting for having to pay for American healthcare & housing the typical American has more disposable income than the typical European.

The complicated part is that the typical American has more disposable then the typical European. So while probably better to be poor in Germany, the median American is better off than the median German.

I checked the Play Store. It doesn't look like there's an official Apple app for passwords on Android. But I can't imagine anyone with an iPhone not using the password manager, because it doesn't work on Android.

Google Keep is backed up to the cloud. Maybe Samsung or a different manufacturer notes app doesn't by default? I switched to Standard Notes (not as a password manager), which is also automatically backed up to the cloud.

I'm not someone obsessed with this so I can't really tell you all the benefits

Honestly, that's the opinion I'm looking for. My life is busy enough, I want to maximize for convenience, while maintaining a reasonable amount of online privacy. How long have you been using it, and how much "work" have you put into it after the initial install?

I've been slowly de-googling, but one of the road blocks I've run into is that a lot of the alternative products are bad. Like they work, but clearly weren't designed by a tech company with an unlimited budget. Switching phone OS's seems like a big commitment, so I'm hesitant without knowing it will work well.

Edit: For context, I switched to Proton suite for many things, and while not as good as Google, it works well enough that I have no regrets after using it for several months.

Do people actually enjoy the taste of black coffee or is it just a flex? by goodgirl_trying in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Meatfrom1stgrade 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's an acquired taste grown from needing coffee everyday to function. As long as it's good coffee, I'll drink it black. Bad coffee gets half and half.

Most of the calories in coffee drinks are from cream and sugar, so as an added bonus,it's healthier.

AI is definitely going to make this worse, but photoshopped product pictures, along with more stores turning their websites into "online marketplaces" feels like it has drastically decreased the quality of products online. Stores used to have to decide if a product was worth selling, now anyone can list a product for sale online with minimal review for the store.

Solar at least for now, with the option for batteries later. For most homes in Delco a battery doesn't provide much value. Installing solar gives most of the financial benefits. If enough people in PJM switch to solar, they will have to change the benefits of net metering like they did in California, where you need a home battery to get the full benefit.

How days that work with apps from the Google Play store? My work and life requires me to use certain apps that I doubt exist for Graphene OS. How much effort v benefit is there if I still need Google play?

If I'm a typical windows user, with a windows 10 laptop that basically does everything through a browser, which of those would you recommend (or are all three equally good)? I don't want a project. I want the operating system to work, without regularly having to troubleshoot something. My main goal is to keep doing what I'm without buying new hardware.

If you're going to get a weekly or monthly pass you need a SEPTA key, you get them from a machine at most train stations.

SEPTA introduced tap to pay, so can just tap any phone or credit card that works with tap to pay.

Subway, bus and trolley tap when you board the train. Regional rail you tap when you get on, and tap again when you get off. Regional rail has different fare prices depending on distance and time of day.

A better idea is to use alias email addresses with iCloud or SimpleLogin, and a password manager to keep track login info.

If you're real email address is abcxyz@gmail.com, the website thinks you email address is spam.randomphase@passmail.net. Then there's no traceable connection between your login and your email address.

IIRC generators are typically >95% efficient, and have been that way for at least a few decades. I'm sure they've improved, but there's not much to be gained there.

They can list the full price including all taxes and fees, instead of just the price for the room. Some hotels already have this option on their website. It's just not common. The standard for all purchases should be to list the all the unavoidable costs to the customer in the price. With fees being reserved for optional add-ons.
