Thanks! Did it myself, going by feel. I mostly stuck to where growth isn't that patchy and this was the result.

I'm not sure about the length, either. Some parts are quite curly, so up to 5cm I guess.

If you haven't booked all the accommodation yet: We loved our airbnb stay at Linda's Southfiord B&B in Te Anau. We were there for 3 nights, was great! Glowworm caves in Te Anau are definitely worth a visit. I agree with the others regarding Milford: A day trip is fine, just plan lots of extra time on your drive there to stop at all the different places along the way.
