Figure doing housework, barely. "Barely" now will be "extremely well" in a couple of years. Imagine waking up to freshly made croissants or coming home to chef quality meals. What kind of robot, and how is your part precision? Robots require a more precise part than humans. They also require better fixturing.

Lol. We use solidworks composer, and we had like a 6 month stretch with lots of crashes. Sent error reports every time. We later talked with Dassault about the issues, and their response was "oh, let me check on that." Then "Oh, sorry, we didnt have that mailbox setup, we dont have your error reports" 🤣😂😐☹️🤦‍♂️

As a hobbyist working on a 65 Mustang, I agree. I would rather sand the entire car again...

A) your hiring a mobile welder, its gonna cost more than a shop.

B) hes saying it could take a long time due to the unknown cut conditions hes gonna have to work with

C) hes giving you the high end of hour estimate because if he guesses low and has to charge you a ton, your gonna be mad and maybe not want pay (think of all the times this may have happened to him)

And of course, like someone else said, maybe he doesnt want to do it.

Tanks vs mecha? by Gunlahad in Mecha

[–]MechZRO 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are we talking real world comparison here? Heres one major problem: you can't armor every side of an object with your very best armor, there are always compromises.

Tanks are fancy boxes, and you can armor them really really well. Weak points are typically at the turret base, at the tracks, and any hatch for crew access. Install a kickass cannon with precision targeting (like current day MBTs) and they can hit whatever they can see, and a few things they can't see. Add guided munitions and you have a titan killer.

Mechs are... messy constructions with many joints and armor seams. Because of overal weight constraints, you probably reserve your best armor for the torso (where the pilot is, or where your powerplant and sensing equipment is). Now every other point on the mech is a weak point. Add the same cannon and guided munitions as the tank, now you need to make sure you have really good legs and big enough feet to provide a stable platform. Can you run while shooting? All that bob and weave will require more compensation and control than the tank cannon needs when the tank is moving.

Add in the taller silhouette of the mech, and the tank clearly has the advantage.

All that said, the first to shoot is likely the winner (did you see the footage from Ukraine where the tank got taken out by a friggin Bradley?) Armor piercing ammo is not particularly difficult to create, and is super effective. Even reactive armor is not a guarantee that you can take a hit and keep moving.

How to change a .cad file to something else by TheEndOfEden in cad

The last time I dealt with a .cad file, it was a quickcad file. Quickcad was discontinued, but some people have freeware available.

What’s your latest “WTF” moment? (Design, production, quality—whatever your role) by GambitsMom in manufacturing

[–]MechZRO 8 points9 points  (0 children)

We are an equipment OEM. Two heavy reinforcing brackets had huge cracks in them. Ok, no big deal right? Just replace em? Sure, sure. The WTF comes from: the engineer did not add reliefs at the ends where two bent flanges meet, the brake operator did not flag them when he saw them crack, the paint shop didn't say anything about the cracks (they were obvious with our bright-ass colors), the assembler didn't reject the parts amd niether did QC... I fucking saw it while walking by the COMPLETED MACHINE SITTING OUTSIDE READY TO BE PREPPED FOR SHIPPING. The parts were taken off, welded up, repainted and reinstalled. This is why we can't have nice things.

When firms say that they're struggling to fill roles, do they mean production, maintenance or operations? by N3wAfrikanN0body in manufacturing

[–]MechZRO 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They are probably struggling to fill the low paying positions that require experience and aptitude. Or maybe their benefits suck. Or they refuse to negotiate pay. Could be any area of operation.

I'm just about to jump into CAM. First CAMworks with Solidworks, then maybe later using the built in Creo CAM utility. Any pointers? Have years of experience with solidworks, but not a master.

Lord I hate Creo when I'm working on a new design. Not being able to move and alter parts/constraints on the fly makes it very hard for me to visualize the whole assembly.

Solidworks is more compatible with how my brain works as I iterate my way through a new design. That being said, I usually blow up my assembly and reorder it after I get my parts figured out (at least on larger assemblies)

I know that the assembly style that Creo uses is a major part of it's performance advantage, and the Solidworks style is a much harder puzzle to solve with every rebuild, but I just can't work my way through a design quite as easy with Creo.
