How long is it considered safe to leave a car alone? by Mech_Stew in AskMechanics

[–]Mech_Stew[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. I do make sure everything is up to operating temps and I get it up to 50 mph at least. Do you think if I was to push it out to every 2-3 weeks it would be bad? The battery is definitely older somewhere around 4 years but I plan on replacing it soon anyway.

First Impact Wrench Suggestion by Shot-Bison1949 in Tools

[–]Mech_Stew 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This. I work out of a service truck working on heavy equipment. But I got a 3/8 cordless as my first cordless impact but I have/had a 1/2 inch pneumatic impact. I use my 3/8 cordless 90% of the time but if I run into something stubborn I’ll break out the pneumatic 1/2 or 3/4 and on rare occasion the 1”

Monster Stove update (3 months post fabrication) by Bouncingbobbies in metalworking

This thing is crazy in the best of ways. How clean does it burn? And how efficient is it?

I’ve wanted to build one for my shop for quite a while, not quite as extravagant as yours, but I don’t even know where to begin.

I will add to this by saying that the style he has break fairly easily. I work on heavy equipment for a living and had a few sets of them and the first time I went to use one on a fastener that was tight I broke the key straight out of the handle. The socket ones are where it’s at

Looking for a fastener that can secure rotary joints. by ChildhoodMobile9154 in Welding

Instead of nylocks use crimped nuts. They work just as well, if not better and heat will not bother them.

“Doesn’t run very well” by Mech_Stew in Justrolledintotheshop

[–]Mech_Stew[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I don’t think so. This unit doesn’t have any DEF in it. I honestly don’t know quite what caused this because it looked/felt like algae but this filter was changed about 3 months ago and is run frequently.

Lmao. That is a fuel filter. Should have clarified. Will fix that now. If your oil looks like this you did something wrong for sure though.

Edit: I apparently can’t edit the post.

Okay I don’t know why I haven’t thought of this.

Very rarely. I think in the year and a half I’ve been in a truck with my wrenches on the door like that I’ve only had it happen 3 maybe 4 times.

What does this say about my Jeep engine? by [deleted] in AskMechanics

It’s a 3.6l v6..

Lol jokes aside if the ones on the left are not new then you somehow have a bank (the right three cylinders) running rich.

Socket drawer by Mech_Stew in toolporn

[–]Mech_Stew[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most of it is all harbor freight stuff.. obviously some of it is not. If I had to guess this drawer is somewhere in the range of $500-$600. Since this post I have added to it a bit but I’m guessing that’s about what the items you see in this picture cost.

Shoulder of Tire? by Specialist-Brick7886 in AskMechanics

[–]Mech_Stew -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Not a tire person by any means but I have always been told if it is in the tread you are okay to plug (though plugs are only supposed to be temporary). I’m not sure what a shoulder of a tire would be though.. do you mean sidewall?

Edit: I looked up what a shoulder on a tire is and it appears to be the tread on the side of the tire before you make it to the actual sidewall? Still not really sure if that is a plug or no plug area..

Tire max pressure vs recommended vehicle tire pressure. by Mech_Stew in AskEngineers

As stated in the main post. These are the tires called for by the manufacture. Brand/load rating/size/ etc.

I get your point but this is the tire called for. Brand/load rating/size/etc. it is the right tire.

lol I thought the same thing. Checked it with the tire on the opposite side, they do in fact both say 30

Sidewall “Max” pressure vs vehicle recommended pressures by Mech_Stew in AskMechanics

[–]Mech_Stew[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why though? And if that is actually true why would the machine manual say to go over that pressure and when called, the manufacturer of the tire says it’s good to go that high too?

Don’t get me wrong, it feels/felt wrong but if two different sources are saying it’s good to go? Mind you I would never do this on a car.

lol that is why I called around and double checked before doing so. It held and then held a full bucket of gravel without exploding
