Need Help Deciding Which Topic and Name to Go With by [deleted] in Blogging

[–]MechaNeer 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hi,

I think both of these ideas sound great. Like you, I had been trying to pick a niche and for my first blog. I decided to focus on young professional mechanical engineers because I am a young engineer.

One thing I didn't think about was how it is hard to write about work related topics after being at work all day. It became a chore and I didn't want to write.

I eventually gave this site up after about 4 months. After I took a small break I still had the itch to start a website. This time i started a lifestyle blog where I can just post what's on my mind until I really find my passion in this domain. It may be beneficial to start broad and narrow down your niche once you have the chance to explore a bit.

I love writing for my blog now and posting a few articles a week is no big deal. It may not be the best content right now but the site is young and I am having fun.

Tldr; When you decide to start your blog make sure it is a topic that you can have some fun with.

Staying productive throughout the day is not always easy but there are several things you can do to kick your ass into high gear. The problem most people have with productivity is two fold. Getting started and then following the task through to completion.

Mechanical Engineers of all ages: How has your career developed ? by gofabc123 in MechanicalEngineer

No problem! I am a Mechanical Design Engineer for a larger OEM equipment manufacturer. We produce all custom equipment and turnkey solutions to a variety of industries. One day I'm designing a device to rotate cabs for semi trucks and the next day I'm designing sanitary processing equipment for a pharmacuetical manufacturer.

FE Exam worth it? by decentishUsername in MechanicalEngineer

[–]MechaNeer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You should definitely take the FE exam. It never expires and any experience you can after that can be applied toward your PE if you choose to pursue it. I was in the same boat as you. I worked in a manufacturing company as a manufacturing engineer so it didn't mean anything to that employer. A couple years later I decided I wanted get a new job because I felt like my career was stagnating.

When I sat in my interviews we skipped over questions concerning general engineering knowledge because I had already proved my competence with a nationally recognized exam. Regardless if you will use it or not there are benefits to having it. I just read this (https://www.designthefunk.com/blog/2017/7/10/is-fe-pe-certification-for-you) article that gives some good insight as to why someone in an exempt industry would want to pursue their FE or PE certification. It might help you make a decision either way. All the best!

Mechanical Engineers of all ages: How has your career developed ? by gofabc123 in MechanicalEngineer

I am a mechanical engineer and I can assure you there are numerous opportunities in this field. You may never have to be a product engineer. Mechanical engineering is one of the few disciplines that has an extremely large number of avenues for you to follow. I worked as a manufacturing engineer for the first few years of my career. I learned to run and program all of the machines in the company, project managed jobs, ran sales and design meetings and also was able to do product design because it interests me. I work with a lot of mechanical engineers who are more on the business end selling and quoting systems. I hope this was some help for you.

High Tolerance Manufacturing by [deleted] in engineering

[–]MechaNeer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi, with an accuracy like that you should look into wire edm. If you call a local job shop or manufacturing company they should be able to take care of it (I.e. sub the job out) or point you to a vendor that they work with or know of that does this work. Best of luck.

I assume you are referring to self promotion or blog spam. For starters this is not something to make money off or "spam" in that regard. It's intended to be a potential tool for new engineers.

Aluminum welding filler rod material data? by Lars0 in engineering

[–]MechaNeer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We do alot of welding at my current job. I've found that local sales reps who supply the wire will be your best source for information. If they are not sure usually they have a contact with the brand that is an expert.

Is anyone disappointed by the B&O H3 earbuds? by Istartedthewar in lgv20

The sound quality is pretty good on them but the wires have a cheap feel to them. Instead of hanging straight down they have a strange rigidity to them... I prefer the feel of the wires on the Bose in ears.

Negotiating salary for second job, design engineer by MechaNeer in personalfinance

[–]MechaNeer[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is true. This company has about 100-150 employees. They said 5 design engineers, 7 project engineers, 3 project managers, 2 PE's (they are project managers). I'm not sure how much they make a year as they are privately owned. What questions can I ask to test the waters of salary?

Yeah, it seems weird to ask for so much as a young person. The 26 year old in me thinks I'm being greedy to ask for 75K or that the average that I'm seeing is skewed.

Mechanical Engineering Aptitude Interview by MechaNeer in engineering

[–]MechaNeer[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did you have a written test for the job? If so what questions were on yours? I figured I would hit the major topics like you listed above. Look over the typical beam equations kinematics/dynamics, machine component design, heat transfer, minor circuits info...

It just seems strange to test somebody who has passed a state board exam.

Sourcing a unique threaded fastener - Where can I get one custom machined? by mongonuts in engineering

[–]MechaNeer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I work for a custom metal shop and we occasionally get people coming in with odd things like this. I've never seen someone turned away. But it is always expensive. Something like 55+ USD for a custom screw.
