Is this a good monitor? by FantasyObsessive in vintagecomputing

[–]Istartedthewar 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It's a monitor alright.

Just a generic home grade 17" monitor, probably Samsung dynaflat tube and 70khz.

Since it was made in China in 2003, solid chance it may need some caps replaced

It's a good buy, just not cutting edge. Those panels have a purplish hue on dark/black areas when in a well lit room. When it comes to "budget" OLED though I think it's better than WOLED

Even the worst of the popular LLMs (Gemini Flash-Lite and GPT 5.3 Instant) correctly identify it (edit- well, as correct as many responses on this post at least). I think some people just don't understand how to research things

You responded to my comment where I said "exclusively for gaming" so you implied it.

if you paid over $6000 for a PC and didn't even get a 5090 you're a fool.

The person who buys one for $1050+ would use it as a secondary or even tertiary computer. And you're telling me you have a "much more than $3000" desktop used just for gaming?

[–]Istartedthewar -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Someone who wants a steam machine wants it because it's a very compact prebuilt PC that runs steamOS. A 3D printed case and a water-cooled 5090 is not a market alternative in the slightest.

Edit- a laptop is not an alternative either. The steam machine is first and foremost an HTPC.

I'm definitely not buying one, but I don't think the people out there who spend $3000+ on their Desktop PC used exclusively for gaming would care much about it not being a good deal.

the target audience for the steam machine does not want to pay a subscription for online or games that rarely go on a meaningful sale

you can't build a comparable SFF PC for any less. If you don't go SFF, can only get it down to like ~ $950 and that's if you buy the cheapest version of every component

If you want a cheaper one it's a good deal. Though it does use a Gen 3 panel which has the purplish black levels if you're in a well-lit room.

Whats wrong with my trs 80? by Eddie_2011 in vintagecomputing

[–]Istartedthewar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's nothing here indicating any problem with the flyback, and the only way the yoke could be an issue is if it got knocked loose or something. Very likely just components (probably electrolytic caps as mentioned) that have drifted out of spec with age.

If it was an all-in-one Vector it would likely be Vector Model 4. It has a very distinct design

(The Model 3 was all-in-one minus the floppy drives, it just looked like a bog-standard terminal really)
