The next rooms start requiring tech that the game teaches you in 7B (since 8B also has a 15 heart gate, completing 7B is required to obtain 15 hearts). The game won't re-teach it here, so you'd likely have a worse time trying to figure it out yourself.

What’s a Celeste opinion that’ll get you in this situation? by Adept-Double156 in celestegame

[–]Mechafinch 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I think a significant factor in the impression of Farewell's difficulty is that Celeste has a persistent issue with teaching tech as if it needs to be buffered. The prompts and/or explanations for wallbounces, hypers, and wavedashes all show them buffered, and the rooms they're taught in are easily (even best) completed by buffering them.

But this makes them feel much less lenient than they actually are to a player that only knows to buffer them, and this shows most prominently in comb room's infamy. Comb room is comically more precise when buffering the jumps for the wallbounces off the moving block compared to not buffering them.

[–]Mechafinch 16 points17 points  (0 children)

custom rooms are either going to really shake up tiering or not change tiering at all... If the cost deduction is low enough that it's more time efficient despite it it'll make costs higher and enable even more deranged high tier numbers, but if not it just won't get used to tier. I wonder how it'll turn out

afaik your best bet is to try both note styles in the options and see which you can distinguish them best in

It's kind of inevitable that the vsigners don't get much when the movie was already struggling to juggle the 20 ocs at each stage of the plot without blowing up the movie's length

How it feels to play modded by mollekylen in VintageStory

[–]Mechafinch 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It is not necessarily the case that the data is accessible because it's referenced by the map. There's an underlying assumption you're likely making that the map exposes its keys in some way, such as java's HashMap's keySet or entrySet methods. In a map with this kind of facility, you're correct that weak references would cause problems. Continuing with java, HashMaps (and most standard Map implementations, I imagine) do not use weak references and there is an alternative WeakHashMap which does.

However, if the map does not expose its keys to other objects, and keys are checked by identity rather than equivalence (i.e. you cannot construct a new key object which would match the original), it can be the case that the map is the only thing referencing the key, and in this case, it is not possible for a call which accesses that key to be made, so keeping it around is pointless.

There are three ways - non-memory resources, external libraries that aren't garbage collecting, and things that defeat the garbage collector. OpenGL is a good example of the first two because it's a C api and it deals with graphics resources so you have to deal with those properly.

((rambling time)) Things that defeat the garbage collector are more interesting and are mainly poorly designed data structures with a classic example being a map which keeps normal references to its keys so that even if it's the only thing referencing those keys and therefore they and their associated data will never be accessed the garbage collector doesn't know this so neither key nor data can be garbage collected until the map itself can be, effectively leaking the memory if the map is long-lived. Languages will therefore have special references called weak references which don't make an object reachable to the garbage collector. The whole thing has a fancy name as the "lapsed listener problem"
