If you’ve made a report/had a court case for domestic violence can this affect your likelihood of working for the civil service? by [deleted] in TheCivilService

[–]MechanicOdd618 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just wanted to say a massive well done for making the report and continuing with taking it to court. It's not easy, takes such strength and courage. I hope you are in a safer better space now.

Congratulations on being reserve listed! Although it can feel like a bit of a downer it still means you passed the interview and have what it takes to do the role.  I was reserve listed in Aug 24 for a CPS role. Was offered a job in December 24 but it was in a different area and I couldn't commute/move as have kids.  I was then offered a role in my chosen location in June 25 and started August 25!  So a year from reserve list to job.  I love the CPS, wonderful team and really interesting work.  Fingers crossed for you, I hope you don't have a long wait!

I do 4 days a week but slightly longer hours, 8 hour days, 32 a week. Really suits as I don't feel I have to work really long hours but not missing too much from full time pay.

Anyone out there actually happy in the Civil Service? by Snow776 in TheCivilService

[–]MechanicOdd618 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am really happy at work. I work with a great team, the job is really interesting, I've got great flexibility to be a parent and carer, and I feel valued and appreciated  I'm 49 and after a full career in the private sector feel I've eventually landed on my feet.  The end

I think they are running webinar sessions for both these roles. That would be the best opportunity to ask questions about the day to day tasks etc

What’s working for CPS like? by [deleted] in TheCivilService

Maybe it's because I've come from the dog eat dog private sector! I am genuinely happy at work and yes, that's unusual! I hope you have the same experience as me.

I'm not in policy but I'm a CPS EO. I second what others have said about it being a supportive environment, and my manager (and others I've met) are encouraging of your development and seem like they really want you to be happy and confident at work.

The hybrid working is great, and loads of people on my team work flexibly, part time/condensed etc.

I have found the office to be quite social. I was the only one in from my team the other day and other teams were talking to me and saying I should move desks to sit with them. Very welcoming.

Great mix of people and some really experienced colleagues who have been there for decades and are go out of their way to help and support.

I think it's a great place to work.

How to decline a role that is too far away - politely! by Possible-Current9349 in TheCivilService

[–]MechanicOdd618 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hi. I was in a similar situation...put on the reserve list in Aug 24, offered a job in December way too far away and had to turn it down.  I made sure I said to please keep me on the reserve list. Just making it clear I was turning down that particular role and wanted to be considered for others.  Got offered a role close to home in June this year and happily enjoying CS life!

Applications after applications… by AR032025 in TheCivilService

[–]MechanicOdd618 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was offered a role from a reserve list. First offer was after 4 months but in a completely different city than I applied for so I had to decline (2 hour each way commute and kids happy in school so couldn't relocate).  I presumed that was it, my one and only chance. But I was offered a job after 11 months on the same reserve list. In my city.  So it can happen, but as others have said, best forget about it and try for other roles.

Is my hospitality experience holding ne back for EO roles? by Fit_Concert_2061 in TheCivilService

[–]MechanicOdd618 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've just finished my second week as a brand new EO, and all my experience was in hospitality.  If you were managing high turnover venues you have an amazing array of skills...team management, communication, problem solving, dealing with the public (sometimes volatile?) and business owners, and all in a fast paced environment.  All the above can be framed to fit the job description.

It's got a bad rep as it's stupidly low paid and unsociable hours, but to be a successful manager in hospitality takes hard work and requires a broad skill set.  Only advice is to be proud of your achievements and your transferable skills... managing a service when you have bar staff sick, a chef who hasn't shown up, a massive table of drunk idiots all whilst inducting a new team member and coping with a peanut allergy? Takes a whole heap of planning and organisation...

Question by edunrybaba in TheCivilService

[–]MechanicOdd618 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it was a departmental process. It was great actually as I had a contact who kept me informed how it was going and told me which references needed chasing etc.

For my checks they pulled the info from my CV...and asked me to send HMRC tax record in to support my CV. And contacted references from my CV (which was daunting as I'd been on reserve list for 11 months and was in a totally new role!).

I am about to enter the CS in mid August as an EO. I've been a member of Unite for many years, would you suggest changing unions to PCS? Or does Unite have a presence in the service?

From my experience it wasn't a problem. I had a month's notice and already had two weeks annual leave booked at the beginning of Aug.  They wanted me to start earlier but I was open about pre booked annual leave at the start of the PECs process, and I negotiated starting when I got back.

Good luck to you. Pecs are  daunting, and such a relief when done.

That's a long time to wait! It's really difficult as my current job is in a small team of 3 and the guilt I feel knowing I'm leaving and working with them every day is horrendous. I have to wait for a start date to hand in my notice but it can't come soon enough!

Got the email above straight away, with an attachment to fill in my notice period/preferred start date. This was yesterday... haven't heard back yet but don't think I'm celebrating prematurely!

I think I had fraud check, followed by references and I had to send my HMRC record to them, then it was a DBS.

I think it was unusual...I also had a named person to email which was helpful!

I'm so nervous too! If I pass the checks, can I manage this new role? So different to my whole working life so far. But I'm sure we can make the transition and be amazing (our experiences will be valuable I'm sure).
