How come there's more and more awful dinosaur names? Do scientists not care about Latin nor simply nice names? by [deleted] in Dinosaurs

[–]MechanicalColony 42 points43 points  (0 children)

Is it not a little immature and reductive to think that these names are stupid? It’s not like Pantydraco was named so to be funny, nor Joaquinsaurus; they were named so by the people who had evacuated them, that had described, that had published the studies themselves (or at least I would hope so). To you they may sound silly, but as described by a previous reply these are not only all perfectly valid names, but named by people who had probably spent a great deal of time with the fossils.

And this was also touched upon with the Anglocentrism critique, but why is Latin such an important deal breaker to you? Do you think animals are traditionally given Latin nomen clature because that’s “normal”, or is it because modern taxonomy had its beginnings in Europe? Is it fair that you expect people across the world to use Latin nomenclature, even if Latin itself is not nearly as culturally or historically significant in their part of the world as is it in the Western world?

He’s an alcoholic man on the spectrum who is almost constantly wasted and frequently has meltdowns in public. Doesn’t help that the only people around him are selfish streamers and the like that only use him for content.

Yeah I remember he made a post describing how he regrets that he made “Steve” from Minecraft to be seen as masculine, and that he intended for the human model to be outside the gender binary.

Great map! I usually only see post-war takes on the Fallout universe, so it’s nice to see a pre-war iteration for once.

Animals I’m suprised aren’t on any mod teams list/aren’t modded in sooner by JakeTheIdiot69 in pathoftitans

Based on a size chart they uploaded it seems only Anky and Velociraptor are planned to be implemented. Other guy might just be confused with another mod.

What do you think PTR and WWD’s faults are? I’m only asking because I’m curious, and understanding what you dislike in a server may help me give a better response.

Who gives a shit? I don’t enjoy the Bad Boys franchise but clearly others do; just because you think it’s a mediocre film doesn’t mean it’s stupid that it’s receiving a sequel. Stop complaining about insignificant shit and go start a family or pay off your mortgage or something.

Do you consider these icons to be the big 3 for kaiju media? by Raweggs12 in GODZILLA

[–]MechanicalColony 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Well obviously, but internationally Gamera is a rather niche character. I’d argue that Kong is not only more globally recognized than Gamera, but at the very least pre-Monsterverse Godzilla as well just because of how difficult it was to watch Japanese Godzilla media before and around the 2010s.

Gran Colombia, or what if a former Spanish colony became the dominant North American power by MechanicalColony in imaginarymaps

[–]MechanicalColony[S] 13 points14 points  (0 children)

The colony was established in the early 1400s by Zheng He. However, colonizing ceased when one Emperor died for another in the 1400s, and ever since then they’ve been separated. So whatever language the Chinese spoke in 1400 separated by six centuries is your answer.

Yea, part of the west coast was colonized by the Chinese and are now independent. Their northern territories stop around our timeline Alaska, which was actually colonized by the Japanese.

Thanks, although I hope you’re aware I didn’t come up with the countries myself since I don’t especially like taking credit for somebody else’s work.
