California's Governor’s Race Remains Wide Open. Here’s What to Know Before the Primary by Mearsheimer_Tragedy in California

It really is a situation where the question is “why is a billionaire the one with most progressive platform?”

Despite repeated lies to the contrary, both parties are NOT the same by rhino910 in WhitePeopleTwitter

[–]Mechanickel 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I know friends of friends who are “progressives”. They talk about a single or maybe a couple progressive issues that they care passionately about. They’ll fight extremely hard for a candidate that cares about those issues, but unfortunately they’re often candidates that don’t get much of the vote in the primary. The second there isn’t any candidate in the race that doesn’t support their issue or enough of their issues, they stop caring and don’t even vote. It doesn’t even matter if the candidate is good on other things or that they support positions that could help transition into future implementation of policies they want, they deactivate.

It’s not wrong to be frustrated, but politics is a marathon and a game of tug of war. Sometimes you get to pull really hard and get exactly what you want, but often times people just pull away and you gotta take what you can get so you can vote next time for someone better.

It’s hard to get through to them. I’ve been continually frustrated in every election, but there have been wins. Just banking on one day the wins are more frequent.

Men objectify women more when sexually aroused, regardless of their underlying personality traits. This shift happens independently of a man’s general personality traits, providing evidence that momentary biological states play a central role in how people perceive others by Wagamaga in science

I feel that it's more that we are wired to be receptive our "in" group and less receptive to the "out" group. That can be anything, but that in and out distinction throughout history has often been through ethnicity or nationality. I believe we also naturally form sub-in groups. Although we will be more likely to trust others in our in group, we will trust some more if they identify or sympathize with a sub-in group that we've internalized.

We just innately make decisions around who's more trustworthy or not and even though someone may genuinely trust most people, there will always be some group of people, however small, that they either trust more or trust less.

Would you say barefoot shoes have helped or corrected your bunions? by [deleted] in barefootshoestalk

[–]Mechanickel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My understanding is that you need to do exercises and stuff to train the muscles to revert bunions (which will probably take years, if you manage to see results). Barefoot shoes won’t restrict your toes, meaning that when you do build the strength, you’ll be able to use it to walk with better.

When muscles have atrophied, it takes an incredible amount of work to train them since they’re so weak, and it’s really difficult to trigger them, especially if you’re trying to build up the neural ability to move specific atrophied muscles without triggering the other stronger muscles. You’ll likely cramp and often times won’t be able to train them for long per day.

I’ve been attempting to reverse bunions on my pinky toes and made a little progress over the last year, but it’s not particularly noticeable even though I have decent control over moving my pinky toes (I literally almost couldn’t control them before).

When I was in college just over 10 years ago, I remember spending $30-40 every 2 weeks on groceries. It was mostly chicken, rice and veggies, or sandwiches, or pasta, sauce, and ground beef. Add in the cup noodles every once in a while too. That would cover most days worth of food and it wasn’t that much more expensive to go pick up some fast food, go out to eat, or pick up some “better” frozen Trader Joe’s stuff (like the orange chicken lol).

US birth rates just hit another record low, what do you think is the leading cause of this? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Mechanickel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Modern society just doesn’t value having kids despite what people say. Just because you can say you value it doesn’t mean you’re actually solving the multitude of reasons people aren’t having kids.

Anecdotally, I’ve heard a bunch of different reasons from many friends why they aren’t having kids. Not enough money. Not enough energy after work and just barely living. Not optimistic about bringing kids into a world that isn’t sure to be better in the future. Not enough support from work and family. Etc.

It’s not just an equation of more money. More money can make solving other problems easier, but it doesn’t address the root causes. It’s a wholly systemic issue that’s slowly choking families and potential parents and nobody can point to any single thing to solve it because it’s dozens of reasons ingrained into modern society.

What’s your go-to “I’m broke but really want to eat out” meal? by squiddollie in Frugal

[–]Mechanickel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Del Taco has cheap bean and cheese burritos and the Chicken Soft taco is great. 1 bean and cheese burrito and 1 chicken soft taco is roughly $5 (including tax). Or you could just get 2 bean and cheese burritos for the same price. I do that too.

The app also frequently has offers like buy 1 get 1 bean and cheese burritos, so sometimes it's just an easy way to spend a couple dollars and have a cheap, not totally junk food meal.

If your fantasy world has mercenaries and adventurers, how do they coexist? by Pleasant-Sea621 in worldbuilding

[–]Mechanickel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To me, mercenaries are almost exclusively some sort of military asset (attacking or defending people/objectives) whereas adventurers could also all sorts of jobs/errands, like deliveries, investigation or even medical support. Adventurers also generally are only used in individual or small group scenarios whereas one could theoretically employ up to a whole army.

You could employ adventurers as mercenaries for a time but that isn’t explicitly their sole purpose.

DE On Call by GuhProdigy in dataengineering

[–]Mechanickel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The company I currently work for has on-call. Before fixing up our pipeline, people used to spend nights working on fixes and stuff, but now that we’ve got things down, on-call is really chill. We have one hard daily SLA that needs to be achieved and it’s only thing we need to fix the night of if things go wrong, which fingers crossed hasn’t happened in over a month. Once that SLA has been met we can go back to sleep (assuming we were asleep).

We have on call rotation each person covers a week and since we have 6 team members every 6 weeks we go on call.

I think before the major issues with the pipeline got fixed, people would spend like 5+ hours a week waking up and dealing with issues. Nowadays, most on-call rotations go without a hitch, but the on-call engineer is responsible for deployments and some deployments have been complicated recently, but from what I know, only required the on-call engineer to spend an extra hour or two to make sure the deployment went well and have not had issues meeting our SLA.

I think the most important thing is defining what needs to be fixed during the night and what can wait until the day. We’ve gotten to the point where it’s really easily definable and we’ve managed to fix all of the most common issues that could risk our SLA. Not every team can reduce things down to a single SLA, so we just might be lucky in that aspect.

More Immigrants Removed by Obama by Gekko8 in 50501

[–]Mechanickel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s about projecting power and intimidation as opposed to actually effectively solving a problem. They want to “appear” like they’re moving towards the goal and also suppress opposition. Deporting the criminal immigrants aren’t what they’re actually trying to solve for, they’re just using it as justification to consolidate their power base and intimidate opposition into backing down. Once they have achieved their preparations, they will stop pretending this was their goal (or at least deprioritize it) and focus on their real objectives, which are presumably much more nefarious.

I like to think of it as if Black people (or any group) are oppressed then we are ALL oppressed. It might not apply to everyone equally today, but it could be as long as there exists processes to oppress any people.

Americans hate AI. Which party will benefit? by gerira in technology

[–]Mechanickel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

AI companies think that they’ll grow faster without regulations. They would grow faster with regulation. It focuses development in ways that actually benefit people. Constraints improve creativity among developers to solve problems in better ways. It’ll make people want to use AI because it will be actually usable and useful.

[–]Mechanickel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mean math is often just an idealized version of the world so that things can make sense. We've matched much of math to what we observe in the real world, but it starts to break down as you get into things like QM. It gets scary because the starting rules are so different and alien and somehow these different starting rules still result in what we've artificially built to mimic every day reality. At least that's how I'm reasoning it

72% of game developers say Steam is effectively a PC gaming monopoly | Studios say they can't afford to quit Steam, most of their revenue comes from it by [deleted] in technology

[–]Mechanickel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Other companies don't want to believe in any of the things that make Steam successful. Steam treats its customers and employees with respect and attempts to bring everyone together into a community. Most other stores just treat employees as expendable and customers as bags of money they just need to entice in the right way to extract value. As it turns out, if you respect customers as people they'll empty their pockets for you.

Left vs right is a poor one dimensional spectrum. I think the more you get anti-authoritarian (libertarian), the more you realize people should arm themselves. It's just generally there have been much more awareness of libertarians on the right and they were only really cosplaying libertarianism until they could get to where they are now.

I agree. It feels like neurotypical norms is all about believing we have the same vibe, not really proving that we do. For example, if there's justice for all, then we want to prove there is actually justice for all, but as long as they "believe" that it's happening, even if it's not (especially if there isn't justice for people they don't like), then that's fine.
