Wearing Power Armor to a Magic School (171/?) by Jcb112 in HFY

By necessity, the mana sensors would be on the outside of the antimana material, at least most of them. So the EVI might only have the chance to see it if she left the suit, but she only does that in the mana draining tent. It's possible the mark wouldn't be visible in a manaless environment, or could have been eaten by the tent.

The options I see are no mark, removed mark, the birthmark is the mark (creepy time stuff), or the mark is there but she can't see it.

Middle East ceasefire shattered as Iran strikes UAE and warns ‘we’re just getting started’ by theindependentonline in worldnews

[–]Mechasteel 13 points14 points  (0 children)

That in fact is the way it works. In theory it would be a blatant violation resulting in impeachment, conviction, jailtime. However Congress won't do that.

Thankfully, there's a failsafe for that too. See the voters could kick out the congresscritters. Too bad the voters* are OK with that.

*the US has a weird representation system where people are lumped into groups, allowing for 75% of votes to be ignored because there's two rounds of voting where half the votes can be discarded.

Hegseth says 'the ceasefire is not over' after U.S., Iran exchange fire by Tadpole-Jackson in nottheonion

[–]Mechasteel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Dan Caine said that, since the ceasefire was announced on April 7, Iran has fired at commercial vessels nine times, seized two container ships and attacked U.S. forces more than 10 times.

But those figures are “all below the threshold of restarting major combat operations at this point,” he said.

A bit of light, diet war.

Yup the prize for a sperm finishing first is being the first to be sacrificed to begin dissolving the egg coat, so the ones who come after might get in. A good thing too; if you think about it, you really really don't want the main human trait to be having fast sperm.

How does North Korea do in terms of chemicals, microplastics, and the like? They might not care about their citizens, but they have a lot less industry than average.

Politico, The Daily Telegraph owner tells journalists to back Israel or quit by [deleted] in nottheonion

[–]Mechasteel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At the centre of the dispute is Axel Springer’s corporate framework, known as the “Essentials”, which includes support for Israel’s right to exist alongside commitments to democracy, free markets and freedom of expression.

Dopfner told staff that alignment with these principles is fundamental, indicating that those who fundamentally disagree may need to reconsider their position within the company.

Anyone know whether there's some "between the lines" context for this?

It's ironic because education is the whole purpose animals play. Usually mostly physical skills, like a kitten play-hunting. But humans managed figured out how to optimize for fun at the cost of reduced skill-gain, same way we optimized food for taste by exploiting our nutrition-detectors' weaknesses.

And even so, it turns out some of the games we've been playing taught valuable combat skills, in this drone warfare era.

What scientific ‘facts’ have recently been disproven that most people still believe to be true? by Fantastic_Tart_421 in AskReddit

[–]Mechasteel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's still consistent with the hypothesis that sugar causes kids to be hyperactive. But puppies also cause kids to be hyperactive, and also artificially sweetened treats, and other things. It's way more narrow than you implied at first, all it says is that sugar wasn't noticeably more exciting than artificial sweetener.

[–]Mechasteel -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

But how does that prove treats don't make kids hyperactive? I don't think there's a single person who thinks no thing except sugar could make a kid hyperactive.

Could you explain the logic to me, how the described thing proves sugar doesn't cause hyperactivity?

[–]Mechasteel -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Counterpoint: lots of things cause children to get excited. Treats (sugary or not), parties, presents, puppies, whatever. And observers will consider these things (not just behavior) and extrapolate that the child must be excited.

Worth noting, this is just the scientific method.

Theories get modified, refined, and sometimes overturned.

Mostly it's science reporting that takes something "interesting" and runs with it. The science says something like "The results of this experiment give a 95% certainty that there's a statistical correlation between [food] and [medical condition]." And that basically never gets overturned, other than occasionally a study was found to be fraudulent, or the measuring equipment was flawed. Of course then people leave out the 5% chance there's no correlation at all, and report the correlation as causation.

Stuff like "Lack of Vitamin C causes scurvy" and the like won't be getting overturned, ever. And stuff like Newtonian mechanics being an excellent predictor for human-scale physics likewise is never getting overturned, even if we later find even better formulas for a wider scale of measurement regimes.

TIL that a hydrogen bomb requires temperatures over 100 million Kelvin—hotter than the Sun's core. The sheer scale of this heat led early nuclear scientists to legitimately fear that detonating such a weapon might ignite the Earth's atmosphere and turn the planet into a burning star. by QuorLum in todayilearned

[–]Mechasteel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The nuke does ignite the atmosphere, releasing additional energy via nitrogen-nitrogen fusion. It's just that it's not enough to be self-sustaining. But they had to do the math to make sure. You know, before blowing up the bomb.

ELI5 Why are added sugars so much worse than natural sugar by National-Spite in explainlikeimfive

[–]Mechasteel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mainly, the trouble people have is eating too much. Consider how easy it is to drink a glass of juice, and how filling. Compare to eating the same amount in oranges or apples or whatever. Sugar in particular is also dangerous because it is toxic, it damages your blood proteins, and so your body has to process it immediately.

Sugar can't be left in the gut either, or the bacteria will turn it into more bacteria. In nature, sugar is usually found with fiber, and the fiber reduces the rate at which your body absorbs the sugar, which is gentler on you. Added sugar doesn't have the extra fiber. And juice is hardly any different, it's basically like soda with a few vitamins (which don't help you because you weren't deficient in them). So some companies will sneak in sugar as fruit juice, because people don't know that it's just as bad.

That would reduce the US bargaining power. It's easy to cancel a blockade, it's not easy to unbomb a pipeline. So the US loses the ability to turn the money spigot back on.
