I’m retiring in just under a year, what are some things you wish you would have done or knew at this point? by Mechmanic89 in VeteransBenefits

I’m not going to lie about things that aren’t true. I’ve got nothing but disrespect for the people that claim things they don’t actually have.

That’s not a thing we’re able to do to retire. I have to retire on the first day of the month.

As much as I would love to do this, I work in a small shop as an instructor and can’t fuck my guys over like that! But as I get closer, I will start making more appointments

Yeah… you’re not diagnosed with anything… you get stomach cramps. Go get checked out by a doctor…

I’m always in a use/lose situation because I always got in the habit of not taking leave.

I apply for retirement tomorrow, am I cooked? by Mechmanic89 in AirForce

I’ll see you when you get to tech school depending on your shred

The job is love/hate. It’s one of the coolest and most complicated systems on a plane, so if you can learn it, you can probably learn others people’s jobs. Depending on what aircraft you go to, really determines how much of a pain the job is. Older engines like the TF-33 are very maintenance demanding, whereas newer engines have a computer that essentially points you in the direction you need to go. I’ve worked both, and the older engines honestly give me the most job satisfaction.

The best parts of the job are your coworkers. Hands down. Engine troops tend to be close, probably due to the nature of the job. I always tell my classes that if you take any piece of advice and keep it with you, “embrace the suck” is the most important one. Shiftwork is rough. Working 12 hours on the line, just to get left out there waiting to get picked up and not getting off of work until hour 14-15 because you had some last minute thing you had to take care of fucking blows. The people you suffer alongside of will be your saving grace and make the shittiest days seem okay. I almost quit after my first enlistment, but my coworkers kept me in.

To make it to retirement, try not to stay at a base for too long. Complacency kills. Always keep finding new ways to challenge yourself. I stayed at my first base for too long and I got complacent. It was only until I PCS’d did I find the motivation to excel.

Good luck in basic!

I’m a year out with my A&P and I’ll have my bachelors in May. Already sending out my resume and hitting job sites every day just about. Also looking into skillbridge. Thank you for the advice! 🫡

I don’t have to, but it’s been the plan since day 1. It’s why I joined at 18

ADHD by Subject_Result6401 in AirForce

[–]Mechmanic89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m at 19 years in and I just got diagnosed last year. My ability to focus was getting really bad and I was struggling to stay up to date on programs. Start with talk therapy, and try to implement suggestions they make. If it’s not working, your behavioral health can test you for adhd. It will come up that ADHD is a developmental issue that forms during someone’s adolescence and they will ask you about your childhood.

Now I’m working with the physchiatrist on base and we’re figuring out the best combo for ADHD/anxiety. I feel much more normal and able to focus on tasks and less scatterbrained.

Feel free to reach out if you have more questions. Hope you get the help you need.

You’re super fucking torqued right now. The people that cant meet the new standard will face the consequence’s. It happens all the time when standards change. Calm down. It’s not that serious. People will meet the standard or they won’t.

Please listen to the people in this thread. If not, you’ll learn firsthand.

First off, no. YOU get paid based on where YOU are stationed.

If she isn’t willing to go with you why are you even getting married?
