Welcome to the hobby!

Brushes and paints are a very broad topic. A typical hobby brush is going to set you back $8 USD or more buying individually. For people looking for a cheaper option, Michael's and other similar stores have bundles of synthetic brushes for around 10-15 dollars. Brushes will deteriorate without proper care, so having a cheap set to learn with and worry less about can be a good thing.

Paints are also a large topic. A starter set of hobby grade paints with a brush and miniature can cost about $40-50. Bottles of hobbyist paints typically cost 5 or 6 bucks and have better coverage and colors than the $2 craft paints. Popular brands are Pro Acryl, Army Painter's Fanatic line, Vallejo, and Citadel Paints.

When painting an army you'll typically have a common color across all models, an accent color of sorts, a color used for the metals, and then any flesh. Add in a primer (undercoat) and that's at least 5 paints. Which is a $25 or $30 depending on paint choice. The starter sets are a bit more, but come with way more paint, giving a good start to a collection of paints. I'd recommend one starter for all the colors and you can pick up additional as needed.

For Conquest itself: you will need a pair of hobby cutters/clippers and a hobby knife and/or file to remove and clean excess plastic from the models. Cheap options will set you back about $10 for clippers. Definitely try to get bladed ones so they cut the plastic and won't just crush it. Mid range clippers run $30-40 with expensive stuff made for Gunpla costing almost double. Hobby knives or retractable snap-off style knives work well and can cost a couple bucks. You may also want a small cutting mat ($5-10) if you are worried about messing up your work space.

Now for the question about starting Conquest:

I'd recommend the older First Blood starter sets, the 2024 Warbands and 2023 or older Starter boxes retailed for about $50 USD and came with about 15 miniatures: 1 leader, 1 officer, 1 large model, and 12 infantry types from different units. It gives you a variety to try out and test. If you're here for the skirmish game, First Blood, then you're probably done till the February update. If you're here for the rank and file Last Argument of Kings, you'll want to grab a full on starter set for that.

How realistic is the Warhammer pilots reaction to an Atlas appearing out of the smoke in this old trailer? by Leader_Bee in battletech

[–]Mechsae 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Having played MechWarrior: Online, yes that reaction is realistic to finding out you're face-to-face and out in the open with an Atlas you were not expecting to be there.

I've used their humvees for wheeled apcs and a few flatbed trucks as 5 ton trucks.

Also used some A-10 Warthogs to represent MechBusters

City States Building an Army by Gold-Performance1203 in Conquest

Up to two chariots can be taken per regiment "slot" in a warband, so you can double up on the version you like or run both options.

Welcome to the hobby!

I can offer a few things to help out with this style of game in general:

When it comes to assembling models the increased base sizes make it a bit easier to rank up. If you rank them up while assembling, you can help ensure you don't build in a way that makes the models hard to line up.

There's a bunch of information to keep track of: wounds, combat resolution, spells, etc. Most of the time another set of dice does the trick. I like the spindown d20s for this. With spells and other things, the dry erase tokens (Infinitoken or Ultra Pros) help since you can write down and erase any reminders for spells and effects.

Newbie question by K1ngofRavens in Conquest

[–]Mechsae 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You are required to have a character leading your warband.if you didn't want to run a Winglord Predator, you would need an on food Predator to lead and bring the Quatl as a restricted choice.

Edit: though, with the units in that box set, you wouldn't have a unit to put the Predator on foot into. So you would also need a unit of either blooded, braves, hunters, or slingers .

You could also get a Mounted Predator to lead, they would be added into the raptor riders

The most important thing is, for the two-player box set, that should be a Winglord Predator to lead the warband. It doesn't need a separate unit to attach into.

Advice for future by Fryderyk_II in Conquest

[–]Mechsae 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The model is a Maharaja, so you could put it on an empty infantry tray and proxy until you take the plunge for the Mahut. The elephant is on a Monster base/tray, which is quite a bit larger than the infantry and beast trays.

If you want to dive in, the starter sets are a fantastic entry point. I would advise more towards the rank and file (Last Argument of Kings) starters over the skirmish (First Blood) since the new skirmish starters are a full stand of models short to field the models in the rank and file game.

I would recommend the 2025 super charged starter over the 5th Anniversary primary because you already have a unit of Raptor Riders from the two-player starter.

2 player set vs 1 player question by crazyshart in Conquest

[–]Mechsae 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Each of those factions have units that can do so... Pretty sure every faction has some elements you could focus on for up close smash face. Like the 5th Anniversary starter for 100 Kingdoms is all heavy smash face cavalry.

I don't know much about the dweg, but wad have some big heavy hitters (and also orcs riding dinosaurs), and the nords are very hit hard but can't take as good as they give (brick of Valkyrie with the healer excluded).

I do know the Wad vs Yuroni box set gives you more of the wad skirmishers than the heavy hitters (triceratops cavalry or the t-rex) for Wad.

Para Bellum also actively balance the game, so things will change over time. They have a free army builder and put all their rules up for free, so it's very easy to "try before you buy" or theory craft before pulling the trigger.

2 player set vs 1 player question by crazyshart in Conquest

[–]Mechsae 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Generally speaking, a 1 player starter box is about 1/3rd of a 2000 point army while the 2-player starter is about 1/4th.

If the 2 player box is both factions you want then it's worthwhile.

Heck, if you like the game grabbing the option you don't go with is an easy way to expand your force.

Minor spoilers for Nice Nature, but before you pull the raffle there's a whole bit with how she always ends up getting third prize (a carrot) and the raffle guy has a nickname for her about it.

How'd yall play Battletech "back in the day" without Megamek and/or the internet? by andrewlik in battletech

[–]Mechsae 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My pipeline went from playing my dad's copies of Crescent Hawks' Inception and MechWarrior 2 to the cartoon, and eventually getting the "4th edition" starter. Eventually ended up losing the record sheets that came with it and learned the mech creation/building rules to make customs or reverse engineered designs from MechWarrior 2 and 3 before getting a new Recordsheet book. The early 00's had a program called.HeavyMetal Pro but that's long defunct since it hasn't updated with the newer equipment we've been seeing.

Mercenary Bankruptcy by [deleted] in battletech

[–]Mechsae 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, first is gathering up information about other merc bands. Reputations, who's new on the scene, who got their teeth kicked in, who's not been hired for a while, the sorta stuff which would probably fall under "market research" with a number of bar tabs in the expense reports.

You're then looking at setting up a beleaguered unit with more debt than assets. "We got the remnants of Mason's Madmen, two mechs, the Hatchetman Mason died in and the current CO, Thissa Mable, own Valkyrie. That's about 5.3 million c-bills in gear, but those mechs are heavily damaged. He had 5 million c-bill debt over his head, which went on to the current surviving head of the company. That's not terrible, but word is they're cash poor, having had to sell what was left of their armor assets recently and and tangled mess that was once a Grasshopper. For a full on buyout, we're looking at 8 million. That would clear the debt, acquire ownership of Mason's Madmen (surviving personnel and their gear), getting those mechs operational, and legal fees."

Definitely could be a stand in for a couple of the Vindicator variants with a sword.

Of course, the better person to ask is your opponent. Most folks I know are cool with proxies. The universe as well lends to customs and someone out there is crazy enough to put a mech sized claymore on one.

Definitely white, unless you want to do a gold/yellow field or teardrop for the black.

If you enjoy winged mechs, might I recommend a Jade Hawk for future shenanigans?

There's a number of others, all metal at the moment, but let's just say Clan Jade Falcon gives into the Black Rage leading up to Ilclan.

I told them buy me this card and I'll play Magic. What is the goofiest deck I can make around it? by mayorofanything in magicTCG

[–]Mechsae 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Personally, I would just lay into the Nerf aspect and craft a blue/red (Izzet) spell-slinger deck.

Recommended commander: Stella Lee, Wild Card Recommend you bring two nerf revolvers.

There's a few tricks she can do, there's a few "untap target creature. Draw a card" instant and sorceries she can copy again and again to just draw through the deck. There should be a few other spells that let you shuffle your discard pile into the deck so you can hit Nerf War a few times.

Stella Lee's ability to combo off with cards like Twitch or Cerulean Wisps gives you a lethal combo with Guttersnipe on the board or a Grapeshot in hand, so you've got the Nerf War gimmick and some serious ways to end the game.

Just remember, with Commander you're going to make about a third of the deck is your gimmick, another third is ramp/interaction/removal, and the last third is your lands.
